Title: Judges
Post by: NWJosh on April 30, 2009, 10:01:15 AM
I actually saw this on a deck building thread but I had thought about it before hand.  Why is Moses not considered a Judge?  I look at him and Joshua both being Judges, but even if Joshua isn't seen as one I really see Moses as being one.  There is like an entire chapter that talks about how Moses had to judge and was so busy he couldn't do anything else.

http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/index.php?topic=15095.0 (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/index.php?topic=15095.0) discusses this topic (among others). Late in the thread, Stephen notes:

But the scripture ON Judge's Seat talks about Moses sitting there.

Yes, but scholarship on Judaism and the age of Judges suggests that Moses had a role as elder among his people, which eventually evolved into the role played by the judges later in their history.  They had functions that overlapped but it doesn't necessarily mean that he is in the same category as they.  Judges were also roughly equivalent to what passed for kings in other cultures but that does not mean Redemption should treat judges as royalty characters.

In other words, Moses judged, but was not necessarily a Judge.

Judges are also connected to the cycle of turning away from God, oppression from their enemies, God raises up a Judge, delivereance from enemies, worship God, and then turning away from God again. This cycle recurres over and over again throughout the book of Judges.  I believe Samuel is concidered the last judges although he dosen't show up till Samuel and Kings.

Why is Moses not considered a Judge?

There are various definitions of Judge--the office not the job--used by the Church today.  Eastons sums up the view that probably has the most adherents.

Quote from: Eastons Bible Dictionary
Judge
(Heb. shophet, pl. shophetim), properly a magistrate or ruler,
rather than one who judges in the sense of trying a cause. This
is the name given to those rulers who presided over the affairs
of the Israelites during the interval between the death of
Joshua and the accession of Saul (Judg. 2:18), a period of
        general anarchy and confusion.

So, it's not like excluding Moses from the ranks of Judges is a renegade view. If anything, adding Joshua to the list is more out of the mainstream than excluding Moses.

While my personal opinion agrees with Eastons, I believe the card Judge's Seat should be able to be used by both Moses and Joshua from a scriptural point of view.  Unfortunately, the wording in the identifier section excludes them.   :(

You don't want to put Moses in Judges seat anyways because he is 8/8.

But if Moses is the only "judge" you draw for the first several turns, then a Moses that is "sleepy" or "hungry" could be quite effective.

True, plus 8/8 is plenty small enough to kill about half of a standalone defense.

I used the promo Samson in my Judge's Seat, but it didn't have much effect.  :o

Samson was a better man when he was standing up.
