If I search and find nothing to get, do I still get to discard an EC? Or is the discard contingent upon adding the card searche for to your hand?

You have to find a qualifying Artifact or Temple and add it to your hand for the second ability to trigger.

Yup. X to Y means that you have to fulfill X to benefit from Y.

Yeah, normally that works... except most of the time my temple art is Lampstand.

Actually, you get to W and if you can then do X, you can do Y.

Knowing about the W can help at times.
