Title: Iannes? Magicians? Wikipedia?
Post by: JDS on August 06, 2009, 04:46:23 AM
Jannes and Jambres are only mentioned in one verse (2 Timothy 3:8 - "Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men oppose the truth—men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected."), but based on that vague description, can we assume they are magicians?

Also, why aren't they more powerful? Their wikipedia entry (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iannes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iannes)) says they broke into heaven and fought off Michael and Gabriel, only to be later defeated by Megatron.

Metatron =/= Megatron :)

If you read Exodus 7-8, they are beleived to be pharoh's magicians. I guess the real question is, since there's already a Pharoh's Magicians, are they representing the same person?

Wow, this Metatron character is extremely interesting. I'm surprised that I hadn't heard of him before.

Another strike against the use of Wikipedia...

Uhhh...how?  That article pretty much says...This source says "this" about these people, these legends say "this" about these people.  Its not presenting what its sources say as truth, it merely tells you what the sources say.

And you can be sure that Paul was aware of the mythology surrounding the two magicians, just as Paul and Jesus were both aware of the assumption of Moses and Jude was aware of the writings of the book of Enoch.

It has no sources (see: [citation needed]).  You can't blab about an undocumented legend on something and claim it is reliable.

And you can be sure that Paul was aware of the mythology surrounding the two magicians,

I can't find any reliable references that document the legend, much less source it.  And how now we sure he knew it?

I assume you all know that Wiki is not a reliable source for information, particularly religious. I suggest looking in the Bible. If it isn't there, it isn't guaranteed to be true. Everything in God's Word is 100% true.

That's the truth. Many topics Christians hold as truth were clearly written by people skeptical of that, and it comes across in the tone, no matter how much Wikipedia strives for unbiased, encylopedic articles.

On topic, Mike, any thoughts on the Egyptian-ness of those in captivity, especially considering that Midwives are considered Egyptian?

I didn't realize that Wikipedia was in ancient Alexandria.

It's an allusion to this quote from the leader of the Muslim army:

Quote
"They will either contradict the Koran, in which case they are heresy, or they will agree with it, in which case they are superfluous."

I also would love for frisian9 to be back up his opinion
Quote
Everything in God's Word is 100% true.
or further elucidate it to me in PM's. From my close study of the Bible, this statement appears to be very false.
