Title: Hidden Treasures in a side battle
Post by: DJWeb on July 07, 2014, 03:50:32 PM
If I begin a side battle while I am blocking a battle (e.g. Christians Suing Another) and I have Hidden Treasures up and I bring a solo green prophet into my side of the side battle, do I get to use HT's ability?

I don't think so since your green brigade prophet wouldn't technically have began the battle as Hidden Treasures says.

For reference:
Hidden Treasures - Once per turn, if your lone green brigade prophet begins a battle, you may play an enhancement or discard an evil enhancement in an opponent's deck.

Hidden Treasures: "Once per turn, if your lone green brigade prophet begins a battle, you may play an Enhancement or discard an evil Enhancement in an opponent's deck."

I'm not 100% sure, but if this came up at a tournament I was hosting I would rule that the prophet did not begin the battle, the side battle enhancement did, so the requirements for activating HT are not met.

But he did begin a battle. It just so happened to be a side battle so I feel like you would be able to use hidden treasures ability.

Koala's and my stance is not that a battle wasn't begun, because one clearly was. We're thinking that the thing that began the battle was the enhancement, not the Hero.

Just working through this here... I don't think a hero starts a normal battle either. A normal RA or BC is begun by a player per the game rules. Since Hidden Treasures works in this normal battle - which was not begun by a hero or its ability - I don't think that saying the enhancement started the battle is a reason not to let Hidden Treasures work. I think it really comes down to who is in the battle when the dust has settled. Just my thought process.

I don't have a strong opinion either way, I'm fine with HT working or not working in a side battle, I just think that side battles don't start the same was as the initial battle of a turn so there is wiggle room there for the possibility of HT not activating in a side battle.

I can see both rulings being the answer to our question.

Is there an official ruling on this?

I would disagree with the assessment that the enhancement started the battle, in the same way that game rule or the player personally did not start the battle in any normal situation.  Normally on a BC or RA, the player pushes a hero in via the game rules, but we don't say either started the battle, we say that the hero started the battle.  In this case, the enhancement allows for the battle, much like game rules in the normal situation, and it does not matter that it is not the first battle of the turn nor does it matter that it was involuntary.  The heroes in battle still started the battle.

Therefore, I would rule that HT could certainly be triggered in a side battle, though of course it is only once per turn.

Please remember that my rulings do not reflect any actual, official ruling.

It occurs to me to question what the definition of "lone" is. Does it mean the only Hero in battle at all, or just on your side of the battle? If the former, then HT cannot trigger in a side battle between Heroes. If the latter, then I'm fine with it working the way Redoubter describes.

Characters opposing you in battle cannot be counted for your side for whether your hero is alone; they are alone if you have no other character on your side (basic definition of that, I know there are other cases that don't trigger HT).
