When does a card like first fruits come back? Is it immediately after upkeep phase or when you chose it to during your prep phase? Thanks
-
If you mean when the heroes you set aside using Firstfruits come back then they would return during your next upkeep phase and then you draw four once you discard a good card from hand.
-
What I am asking is after my upkeep phase do I have to discard and draw immediately or could I say activate an artifact or play a territory class enhancement first and then discard and draw?

When your upkeep phase begins, the first thing that happens is counters are updated. This includes set-aside cards and would bring your heroes back, activating the ability of FF. So the way I understand it, you would have to complete FF ability before you do anything else during your upkeep.

The ability on Firstfruits resolves in order. So once the heroes come back then you immediately discard a good card then draw four. You can't pause an ability to do other activations and then return to it whenever you want to. Once the discard/draw is complete, then you can activate an artifact, play TCEs, etc.

Intuitively you might think that set-aside cards are returned during the upkeep when they receive the final counter and reach the end of the time they are to be set aside. That's not quite how it works though.
A set-aside ability with a specified duration returns the card(s) it set aside when the duration is reached. If it is a turn-based duration, return the card(s) set aside during your preparation phase.
According to the REG entry quoted above, you get to choose at which point during your preparation phase you wish to return the set aside card(s) and receive the benefit.
Over the years we've discussed changing that so that the cards return at the moment the counter is added. Thus far we've decided to stick with the "way it's always been" because it gives players more options and adds strategy to the game.

I actually asked this because I saw Gabe playing it this way in a video on youtube and I had never thought it could be played this way

Gabe (and John) make a lot of silly mistakes in their games on Youtube. But this isn't one of them.
-
So to clarify, you can split up the benefit of Firstfruits as Xonathan is wanting to do (such as activate an artifact first before discarding a good enh and drawing four cards) since the return is a choice and can be done in prep phase and not in upkeep?

True dat. Shame we couldn't get together this year for one

Just to make it very clear...
You can return Heroes/discard/draw at any point during your prep phase.
You cannot return Heroes, then play TC or activate an artifact, and then discard/draw.
The return/discard/draw happens all together.

I don't see a post from Xonathan in this thread so I'm not sure what this in reference to.

When you return the Heroes (from First Fruits) you must complete the entire ability (discard and draw 4). If you want to play cards from hand, activate an Artifact, or any other prep phase action, before returning the Heroes you may.
**Instaposed - what Justin said. ::)

Sorry, I glanced at jazz's name and thought it was Xonathan. This is the second time that's happened to me on two different posts.
And thanks. I just wanted I make sure it can be done in prep at any time. I know that abilities cannot insert themselves between other abilities in this phase.
So in the case in which a card tells you when it's done (such as Alex Ship, which says "Each upkeep") you have to do it during that phase only, correct?

Correct
