If I block and Angel of the Lord is played on me, can I then play escape and get my character back, or is it automatically discarded because of the dominant being played?

Escape "Interrupt the battle and return your Evil Character to your hand"

Dominants cannot be interupted.   You can heal your EC but you cannot play an interrupt card to retrieve it.
