Does DOU work on Elymas the sorcerer and he lives or does DOU do nothing on him?

It does work as noted, but he would still be discarded if DoU were played on him. Characters cannot be protected from themselves. If another EC in battle used it, he would live and they would be discarded.

I thought that rule was characters could not be protected from their own ability?

No, they cannot be immune or protected from themselves. This stems from old combos involving enhancement abuse and has been in the REG since at least 1.0.2 as well.

Dayne is correct. I believe one reason for the original ruling had to do with a green philistine, Eleazer's Sword and ANB.
