my opponent makes a rescue attempt against me. i give them 1/2 of the lost souls card, playing burial the other half. however, my opponent at the same time attempts to play their son of god on the other 1/2, but since i have first response to my own action, i figure i am allowed to bury my own lost souls. however, there are other lost souls available for the son of god to rescue. is the player that played son of god allowed to take son of god back into their hand, or does the card stick since it was played and there are other targets available for it to rescue?

I don't know where to find it in the REG, but this is explained in the section that talks about dominant tying and stuff. I believe the "loser" gets to take the dominant back.

i was under the impression that only applied if both players were going after the same target and there were no other valid targets available for them both to be resolved, but if there are other valid targets available the sog sticks.

+1 with BubbleBoy; I believe the loser gets the dom back. I don't know this for sure; I actually think the answer is in the rulebook but I'm not sure and too tired to get it. :P

Unless someone can show it stated otherwise in the rules, I would lean toward ruling that the person who played SoG was targeting a card that is no longer there, and therefore, they could take it back.

Completely abolish "at any time" in favor of queued playing and this problem also disappears.

but this isnt a question if there is only one lost soul to target. this is a question if there is also more than 1 lost soul in play that son of god is capable of targeting, even if they did intend to use it on the lost soul that was getting buried. i remember in many tournaments past (especially multiplayer) that if dominants are played that try to target the same card in play, the player who has priority by response gets first crack at resolving their dominant, and if there are still legal targets in play for the other dominants to target, they must then target those because they were still played.
