Title: decreasing characters oh my!
Post by: Isildur on February 21, 2011, 06:06:04 PM
Ok so say that if I have say High Priest Palace or House of Rimmon or something like that which will protect from discard in play. My opponent uses some sort of decreasing card like Eaten By Worms (yes its a real card) or Crown of Thorns. What happens?

Do the protect forts do a sort of mirac hankies thing to keep them alive? and if so what happens when I use one of my */0 characters to block?

The current rule is that if they're protected from Discard, they'll continue to decrease (even past zero) and not die until they either lose their protection and a phase passes, or they enter battle and are Discarded during resolution due to <1 defense.

However, this ruling is being challenged by some who want to change the definition of protection to refer exclusively to being untargetable by a special ability.

Don't really like that rule change but this reminded me of something else.

Why do those protection forts protect from discard by game rule of having toughness less than 0 but Goshen, Kingdoms, etc. do not protect from discard by game rule of cards follow what they are on?

The only logic I can think of other than because we said so, is the idea of game rule hierarchy.  Most game rules are superseded by special abilities but some game rules cannot be superseded.

This brings me back to wishing there was a clear list of which game rules fall into this category.

Arrgh, why do people have to keep bringing up these painful memories for me :)

That is indeed the reason given, and I agree that it would be good to have a list of which game rules are in which category.  Someone with a lot of time should try to start putting something like that together :)
