Returning player from the 90's with some questions
« on: April 17, 2019, 11:17:51 AM »

Hey guys! Just picked up some Redemption from my local Lifeway that is closing (RIP) and I have a few questions. Back when I play redemption, every enhancement was basically 2/2 and there were few powers. Now Redemtion is a fully fledged TCG! So, after picking up the I & J starter decks, I have a few questions.

If I send out my foul spirit to block, does he negate the hero's special ability that triggers before battle? Also, does the banding hero need to be put forward as the first rescuer in order to trigger Band?

Also, are old Redemption cards compatoble with the new ones?

Thanks, guys! It's been super fun playing again.

The answer to the last question is yes! From the very first cards that were printed up until today, there's only one that you can't use anymore (the Lost Souls card that counts as two souls). Every other card is fair game, although since the newer ones are a slightly different size your deck will need to be sleeved if you want to play in a tournament.

As to the other questions:
When a hero attacks, it begins the battle phase (even before the block). So yes, once Foul Spirit blocks it will negate and undo the hero's ability (unless that hero cannot be negated or cannot be interrupted, but none of the I/J cards have those modifiers).
Yes, the banding hero must attack first. For example, if Boaz enters battle, you read through his ability, and when you get to the part that can band to a Ruth hero you get the chance to bring Ruth into battle. But if you attack first with Ruth, you read through her ability and there's nowhere that lets you band to Boaz, so Ruth will be alone.

Glad to see you getting back into the game! Let us know if you have any more questions!
ANB is good. Change my mind.

Ok, got another one. If I send my foul spirit against Peter, who's ability takes precedence? i assume it would be Peter's since he is on the table first.

Also, if an evil character defeats banded heroes, do they both die?

If two characters are banded together, and you underdeck one, does the other one lose any enhancements that aren't compatible with it? ex: Delilah bands to Achan, he gets "removed" in some way after a couple brown enhancements have been added to him. Does Delilah only keep the black enhancements?

Can Gabriel initiate a battle challenge just to fetch silver cards from his discard pile?

Do you have to a "legal" target to play a territory enhancement?

With a card that says "doscard this then do that" (ie Lahmi's Spear), does it need to be on the battlefield? Of discarded from your hand? And if it is on the battlefield, if my evil character is going to lose can I just discard the spear to keep him alive?

I have a lot! Haha. I will keep updating this as my brother and I play. We are both avid gamers and so try a lotnof interactions and sometimes overthink things. Thanks!

It would be whichever character was in battle first. Usually that means Peter (since he's a Hero), but if Foul Spirit was already in battle and then Peter was brought in with a banding card, Foul Spirit would negate Peter's ability.

Yes, if a 10/10 Evil Character defeats two Heroes who combine to make 9/9, both Heroes would be discarded.

Correct, the Brown enhancements would be discarded if the last Brown character was removed from battle.

Yes.

No. However, if there are legal targets you must target one of them.

For example, Hypocrite's Proselyte says to "Underdeck a Hero." You can play that even if there are no Heroes in play to underdeck, but if there are Heroes then you must underdeck one of them.

Enhancements must be activated in field of battle (or territory if they are territory class).

Thanks!

Couple more questions: I found my Old Redemption cards! Well, some of them. If I have an old Devotion of Ruth, could I play both in my deck? Or an old 4/4 ruth with no powers? I think these are covered in the rules, but they are a bit wordy haha.

Secondly, are the starter set cards tournament legal?

So if an enhancement has the same name, brigade and picture you can only one for every 50 cards in a Type 1 deck.

Welcome back!  Also if that place has Warrior or Womens packs you should buy them out (you can resell them and they are out of print).

They only had the starters, sadly.

Is there a FAQ or Sticky post that I can read? Or any meta-related blogs? I told my wife about the tournament in Knoxville in August amd she is interested in going since I taught her how to play. I really enjoy the competetive scene of games and  was jw where I could read up on type1 and 2 and all the other things you guys are doing in the game.

Thanks!

The art pile is whatever location you want it to be in your in-play territory (usually it’s on the left side of your deck if you keep your deck to your right). The arts remain face down on the pile until you activate one. When you activate one simply choose which art in the pile (or from hand) you want to activate and turn it face up on the pile and do what the card says to do. It remains there until your prep phase at which time you either keep it active or you deactivate it and activate another art on the pile.

You can also activate a second or third art so long as there are locations other than the art pile that allow you to. For example, Magic Charms can be activated on one of your magicians in territory. Transgressors allows you told activate a single-brigade brown curse on it. Iron Pan can be activated on Ezekiel. If you were to have these three characters in play then you could have all of those artifacts activated on them at once while also having a fourth activated on your art pile.

Check out the REG, pages 22 and 83 for further details.

You really need to try and play someone in person or Skype because it will be so much easier when the person shows you how to play; we learn more by doing and seeing than explaining through text. I can try and arrange time to meet through Skype sometime within the next few days if you’re interested.

Yep. I do it all of the time. I’m currently teaching a new player that way and it works fine for us. He actually uses his cell phone at times and it still works. So that’s another option you have.
