Take, for example, Musicians' Chambers, which says it holds any number of good enhancements involving music, but never specifies that they must be placed face-up; would you still have to put them face-up in the fortress?
-
All cards are placed in play/set-aside face-up unless "face-down" is specified.
All information on cards placed face-up in play/set-aside are open information. Your opponent(s) must be able to see these cards at their discretion.

While we're on this placed in fortresses thread:
Is a judge on the judge's seat in play or in set-aside: especially in regards to discards and captures?
Follow up: if the seat is in play, then can you rescue from it?

This probably deserves it's own thread.
The default location for Fortresses is your territory unless it states otherwise. Judges Seat does not say it's set aside.
Judges Seat does not say that it protects the character it holds so the judge is a legal target for a special ability (capture, discard, etc).
Fortresses reside in your territory. In order for a Hero to rescue they have to enter the field of battle. They can't be in Judges Seat (your territory) and in battle at the same time.

You can only move cards into or out of a Fortress during your prep or discard phase, unless a special ability says otherwise (Goshen, Storehouse, Tartaros), but characters (not considered discarded or captured) that are in the Field of Play, and are not otherwise protected, can be targeted for discard, capture, etc.

Okay, that's what I thought. I guess this kinda follows the "must prove to your opponent that it's the right card" rule.
