Title: Battle Challenge, 2 heros 1 evil ...
Post by: Deck Metrics on September 10, 2009, 12:52:18 PM
Say I'm making a battle challenge with two heros, but my opponent only selects one evil character to block with.  Will the battle only take place between the blocked hero & selected evil character?  Will the unblocked hero NOT enter battle?

I think you might have a misunderstanding on how battles work.

When multiple characters are on a side of the battle, they fight as one. If you get to attack with two Heroes (because of a banding ability, like that on James, Son of Zebedee), there is still only one opportunity to block. They may, in return, band, with a card like Sadducees, but nothing requires a one-to-one correspondence on cards per side of the battle. If there are more cards on one side than the other, nothing special happens. You will add up the numbers on each side as a single unit (8/6 + 7/8 = 15/14 combined), not have multiple separate battles.

Although it would be an interesting variant of Redemption to treat battles like MTG does.... =D

yeah, I use to play mtg, maybe that's why I'm confused.  Sooo, you add up all the numbers and it becomes a grand total?  I don't understand then why would there be banding, it wouldn't make sense to me that way.  This doesn't answer my question either, but now I feel real confused, so

You will add up the numbers on each side as a single unit (8/6 + 7/8 = 15/14 combined), not have multiple separate battles.

does that mean both heros would enter battle?

Battling doesn't work in Redemption like it does in mtg.  You are only allowed a single battle in redemption, in which only a single hero can start the "fight".  Banding allows him to bring some friends along for the fight, other wise its 1 on 1. That's the main difference.  If this still is confusing feel free to PM me.  I played MTG for like 7 years so I might be able to better help you translate into redemption! :)

In normal situations, you will enter battle with one character. Only banding abilities will let you add more. If you attack or defend with a character that says something like "band to ____," then you can bring in others.

For instance, you decide the Hero you're attacking with is James, Son of Zebedee. He's an 8/6 Hero with the special ability, "May band to John." At that moment you can bring John (a 7/8 Hero) into battle as well. You have combined abilities of 15/14. So a 9/10 blocker like Strong Demon isn't going to kill your Heroes, and your strength overcomes its toughness. However, the blocker can play Christian Martyr (Discard a Hero in play.) on one of the two, and that Hero will be discarded, bringing the numbers back down. The battle isn't yet over, though, as both sides can still play enhancements.

There are enhancements that band in characters as well. For instance, the green enhancement Unity in Christ reads, "All N.T. Heroes must join the battle." Each player's New Testament Heroes of any brigades will join the fight, on the side of the attacker (regardless of who owns the Heroes). They will be returned after battle.

By default, however, only one fight will happen per turn, and only one character will be on each side.

Thanks guys, wow, I was way off.  This seems to dull the game or take away some excitement.

There are cards that let you do a second "fight" too if you play them. I know grapes of wrath in TxP does but it is conditional though
