Title: Banding and Rescuing
Post by: Alex_Olijar on August 15, 2012, 08:38:03 PM
Jacob bands to Seraph bands to Hosea to rescue a Lost soul in the general land of bondage. Who is the rescuing hero? Can there be multiple rescuing heroes?

Rescue

This action frees a Lost Soul being held prisoner in the Land of Bondage. A Lost Soul becomes rescued when it is placed in the Land of Redemption. All rescued Lost Souls are taken to the Land of Redemption.

A rescue attempt is the effort to recover a Lost Soul from the Land of Bondage by battle. A rescue attempt battle is initiated when a Hero is placed in the Field of Battle. The battle is considered a rescue attempt if a Hero has access to a Lost Soul at any point in the battle. A player is allowed one rescue attempt per turn unless a card states otherwise.

Yes.

On what basis?

Yes.

On what basis?

I would agree based on it being an archaic term, and I believe "rescuing hero" has been used in rulings to indicate any hero involved in a rescue attempt, whether or not they have access.  I'm going based off of limited remembrance of various rulings where this term is used, and could be completely wrong.  I also have no real proof.  But I am rather sure, if that means anything ;)

What exactly is the reason you would need 'rescuing hero' defined exactly?  That might help figure out what to do.

Assuming you ask for cards like Idle Gossip that start side battles between the rescuing Hero and someone else, you can choose any Hero in the battle during a rescue attempt as the rescuing Hero.

I don't. I'm specifically asking about when the soul is rescued, who gets credit for it and on what basis? I'm curious because I couldn't find anything established as to how we decide that.

Everyone in the battlefield when the LS is rescued gets credit for the rescue. That's been the rule since as long as I've been playing, though where that is written, I couldn't say. I know that even a Hero who doesn't have access to a Lost Soul (say a male Hero in an RA for the female only) gets experience credit for the rescued soul in T2, but that's the only precedent I know of.

This is sort of my point. I can think of at least one specific situation where it very much matter who the rescuing hero in a band is, but I can't find a rule saying how to determine it. We just have type 2 precedent.

I agree with Jordan that every Hero in battle is considered "the rescuing Hero".

I believe any hero that has complete access (both to the site and the soul)  is considered a "rescuing hero."

Ex. With Jacob to Captain going for a */4 lost soul in general LoB, both Jacob and Captain are rescuing heroes. However, if the */4 is in a blue site, then Jacob is the only rescuing hero.

The problem with that is whether or not Jacob could have won the battle without the Captain. If not, then the Captain aided the rescue. The Captain also may have kept ECs out of the battle altogether from sheer awesomeness.

Exactly. This probably needs some kind of definition.

I agree but I think they just gave a definition:

Is it a rescue attempt?  If yes then all heros in battle are rescuing heros.  That seems to answer it, so what other questions are there?  That also happens to be how I've always heard it from years ago.

The part I'm not sure about is if heros that are kicked out of battle before the end are still counted as rescuing heros?

If a Hero is in battle during battle resolution and a Lost Soul is rescued the Hero is considered a rescuing Hero.

If a Hero is not in battle during battle resolution, they are not considered a rescuing Hero.
