Title: REG Corrections and Updates
Post by: frisian9 on August 15, 2007, 09:37:34 AM
This thread will list changes to the online rulebook (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/downloads/rules_4th_edition_final.pdf) and REG (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/redemption_REG.php). Discussions should take place in separate threads in the "REG and Wiki" subforum (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/reg-and-wiki/). Results from the public discussions (and any involving playtesters privately) will be summarized here.

The changes will be posted to the online REG periodically and dated here along with the changes made.

First update was made on August 23, 2007.

Changes since August 23, 2007

I will be uploading all new card descriptions sometime in September. There are going to be "identifiers" on all cards, providing all the list information currently found in the glossary for each card. It is the same style as the "play as", provided to aid players understand and use a card. The info is in mos cases NOT printed on the card - you'll only find these identifiers in the REG online.

Holy Grail clarifications were either corrected or deleted:
•   If Holy Grail is negated during the same turn phase it is first used (e.g., Crucify Him), the converted character reverts to being an Evil Character.  If the reverted character is currently in battle, the reverted character has no effect on the current battle and would return to the owner’s territory after the battle is resolved.
•   If Holy Grail is used to convert your Evil Character to a Hero, the Hero is used to make a rescue attempt, the rescue attempt is successful, and Holy Grail is negated immediately after battle (e.g., Destruction of Nehushtan), you keep the rescued soul even though the character is no longer a Hero.

Negative Effect
A negative effect is any effect from cards not of the same alignment (i.e., good, evil, or neutral) targeting a character.

Alignment
There are three card alignment in Redemption®: good cards, evil cards, and neutral cards.

Convert - Default Conditions

•   If a Hero is converted to an Evil Character, it’s special ability does not work.  If that Evil Character is later converted back to a Hero, it’s special ability works again.
•   If an Evil Character is converted to a Hero, it’s special ability works as long as it does not harm any Heroes. Game rules are still operative (e.g., Heroes may not use evil enhancements or band to Evil Characters).

Piety of Mary
Type: Hero Enh. • Brigade: Yellow • Ability: 4 / 3 • Class: None • Special Ability: Ignore all special abilities on cards depicting a false religious practice. • Play as: Ignore all special abilities on neutral and evil cards depicting a false religious practice. • Identifiers: None • Verse: Luke 10:39 • Availability: Women booster packs (Uncommon)

Lost Souls cards (2-line and 3-line)
Note: Treat the special ability on the 'Lost Souls’ card as a definition. It explains why the card title is plural. It cannot be negated. The 'Lost Souls' card has the same deck building rules as a Lost Soul with a special ability.

Added to Earthly Battle:
•   Potiphar, Pharaoh Hophra

Search, Reveal, or Exchange - Special Conditions
•   If the targeted Lost Soul is exchanged when playing the Rescuer's Choice advanced rule, the exchanged Lost Soul becomes the new targeted Lost Soul.

Set-Aside (The entire section was updated - see http://cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/index.php?topic=7213.0)

Changes since September 19, 2007

Last update there were major changes to the card descriptions and set-aside. I do not anticipate major changes in the next update. They are listed below.

Seeker of the Lost is Female, not Male.

Miscellaneous (Special Condition)
•   Goliath may retain any number of the weapon-class enhancement’s designated for him.

Ignore or Repel (Special Condition)

•   A multi-colored character is ignored if any of its brigade colors are ignored.

Convert (Default Condition)

•   If an Evil Character is converted to a Hero, it’s special ability works as long as it does not target a Hero.  The only exception is that the converted Evil Character may target a Hero for banding (e.g., if Potiphar and Potiphar's Wife were both converted to Heroes, Potiphar's special ability to band to Potiphar's Wife can still work). Game rules are still operative (e.g., Heroes may not use evil enhancements or band to Evil Characters).

Restore Life, Heal, or Release (Clarifications)
•   Cards like Lay Down Your Life that do not specifically mention the word “heal” in their special ability or card errata are not considered healing cards; they are considered substitution cards.  They do not actually heal a character, but rather replace a character being discarded.  They cannot be played outside of battle.  They must be played on a character in battle (or being discarded from battle) since they do not specifically mention the word “heal” and must be played prior to a discard because they do not interrupt.

Satan's Folly
Type: Hero Enh. • Brigade: White • Ability: None • Class: None • Special Ability: If one of holder's Heroes is about to be discarded, Holder may substitute an Evil Character from an opponent's territory in place of the Hero being discarded. • Errata: If your hero is being discarded from battle, If a Hero is discarded this battle, discard an Evil Character in an opponent’s territory to heal that Hero. • Identifiers: None • Verse: Colossians 2:15 • Availability: Apostles booster packs (Ultra Rare)

NOTE: Satan's Folly is NOT cross-referenced as an exchange card

Satan’s Folly
contains a triggered ability, so must be played prior to a discard. is played like a healing card and can be played when the Hero is on the way to the discard pile from the field of battle.  It does not matter how the Hero is being discarded.  It may be due to a special ability (e.g., Christian Martyr or Rizpah’s Sackcloth) or due to abilities (*/*).  Play as a healing enhancement if activated on a Hero in battle or on a Hero being discarded from battle and only if you can discard an Evil Character in a territory.  Just as with a healing card, you don’t need to negate a discard special ability to be able to play the card.

Lay Down Your Life
Type: Hero Enh. • Brigade: Blue • Ability: None • Class: None • Special Ability: If holder's Hero is about to be discarded, discard Hero. Holder may place another Hero of the same brigade from his territory into battle. All previous enhancements stay in play. • Errata: If holder’s Hero is about to be discarded, If a Hero is  discarded this battle, discard Hero to allow holder to place another Hero of the same brigade from his territory into battle. All previous enhancements stay in play. • Identifiers: NT, Depicts a Weapon • Verse: John 15:13 • Availability: Apostles booster packs (Uncommon)

Lay Down Your Life contains a triggered ability, so must be played prior to a discard. is not a healing card, nor is it an interrupt card.  Therefore, it cannot be played in response to losing by removal.  It can only be played in battle, and only takes effect if your Hero is losing by numerical abilities.

Additional Changes since September 19

Roman Evil Character (Glossary Entry)
Mocking Soldier (Priests) may band “to a warrior class Roman Evil Character.” There are currently no general references to Roman characters in Redemption®; references are currently more specific in identifying Roman soldiers or Roman emperors (see Roman Soldier or Emperor ). The following Redemption® cards are considered Roman:
•   (Good): Cornelius
•   (Evil): Emperor Augustus, Emperor Caius Caligula, Emperor Claudius, Emperor Galba, Emperor Nero, Emperor Otho, Emperor Tiberius, and Mocking Soldier

Fight Each Other (How to Use)
If two heroes (or two evil characters) are forced to fight each other, this is called a side battle. In a side battle, each player involved in the original battle controls the characters on one side of the side battle.  The characters which must fight are selected by the player of the side battle ability and placed into the side battle in any order.  If only one selected character was already in battle, then its current controller retains control of that character in the side battle.  If both of the selected characters are being controlled by the same player in the original battle, the player of the side battle ability chooses which one he will control in the side battle.  The player that controls a character controls any banding special abilities (if applicable). However, characters in a side battle cannot band to characters already in the Field of Battle.

Every Man's Sword
Type: Artifact • Brigade: None • Ability: None • Class: None • Special Ability: No battle may begin as a battle challenge. • Play As: Battle challenges are prevented. • Errata: Protect each player without a lost soul in territory from being attacked. • Identifiers: None • Verse: Judges 7:22 • Availability: Kings booster packs (Rare)

Special Situations:
•      If the only Lost Soul(s) available is(are) in sites, Every Man’s Sword prevents a Hero with the special ability to “access any site” to enter the Field of Battle.  The hero must enter the Field of Battle to activate the special ability.  Either a site must be used with the Hero or the Hero brigade color must match the brigade of a site holding a Lost Soul.
•      Abram/Abraham may not enter battle if the only way for him to get access to a Lost Soul is to use his ability to negate the ability on the Lost Soul (i.e.,  Jeremiah 7:18 (‘Female’))

Depicting an Idol (in the Glossary) - Captured Ark and Unknown Nation added

Return to Draw Pile (Default Conditions)
•      Lost Souls held in a site being returned to a draw or discard pile are returned to the corresponding Land of Bondage.

Involving Music
(in the Glossary)
add the following:
Spiritual Protection, Praise Him, Moon, Refined by Fire, Defeating the Enemy

Miscellaneous (Special Condition)
•   Goliath may retain any number of theone of each weapon-class enhancement’s designated for him.

Convert (Default Conditions)

Repentance
• Special Ability: Place this card on any human Evil Character in play and convert to a Green Brigade Hero. • Play As: Convert one human Evil Character to a Green Brigade Hero.

Set-Aside (How to Play)
Set-aside cards may be played on any character you control in play with matching brigade. Set-aside cards remain on the character in the set-aside area until the character is returned to the field of play. When you set aside your opponent's card during a battle, after then battle you must put the set-aside enhancement with the card you set aside. The character can return during any preparation phase, unless the set aside card has a specified endpoint. The set-aside card is then discarded.

Set-Aside (Default Conditions)
Cards are set aside in their owners' respective set-aside areas.

Medo-Persians (Glossary Entry)
Haman, Prince of Persia, and Zeresh

Zerrubabel's Temple High Priest (Glossary Entry)
Zechariah should be added to the list

Seeker of the Lost
Reference corrected to II Timothy 2:4

Additional Changes since November 23, 2007

Pharisees (--> Sadducees reference added and list of Sadducees removed)
The following special ability on these Redemption® cards mention Pharisees:
•   Barabbas, Child of Great Wisdom, Gamaliel, High Priest Annas, High Priest’s Palace, Jerusalem, Nicodemus, Pharisees (3 Variants), and Sanhedrin.
When these cards mention the words Pharisees, they refer to any character that the Bible mentions were a Pharisee.  This means anywhere in the Bible, not just on the card.  The word Pharisee does not need to appear in the card title.  A complete list of Sadducees are described and listed elsewhere in the glossary. These are considered Pharisees in Redemption®:
•   (Good): Gamaliel, Nicodemus, and Saul/Paul (as Paul).
•    (Evil): Hard-Hearted Religious Leaders, Pharisees (3 Variants), and Saul/Paul (as Saul)
A converted Pharisee would be able to band to all of these Heroes.
NOTE: Stone Throwers is not considered a Pharisee; they were part of a crowd stirred up by the Pharisees.

Assyrian Archer is Generic.

Discard or Remove (Default Conditions)
•    If you are required to discard a specific card from hand and you do not have that card in your hand, you must show your hand.
•    Ongoing abilities that are not negated continue until the end of the phase in which they are discarded or removed.

Zerubbabel's Temple Priest and Herod's Temple Priest expanded in card identifier lists in the card description section.

Wasting Disease is classified as a disease.

Involving Music
Several Redemption® cards refer to enhancements “involving music”. Note that this may be used for Covenants cards being used as enhancements. The following cards refer to enhancements involving music:
•   Asaph, Ethan, Heman, and Lamenting
The following cards involve music:
•   [those added are: ] I Am Justice, I Am Mercy, I Am Sustainer, The Stars

Daniel Reference - [those added are] Michael (kings), Gabriel (kings), Foretelling Angel, and Watcher

Manually Triggered Ability
(Glossary Entry)
A manually triggered ability is an ongoing ability that is directly triggered by the holder. Triggered ongoing abilities only appear on Fortresses and cards being treated as Artifacts. They are triggered immediately on cards being treated as Enhancements. Manually triggered abilities can be identified by the phrase “when holder chooses”. The phrase only applies for Covenant and Curse cards when they are used as Artifacts.

Fight Each Other - How to Use
If one or more characters already in the field of battle are selected to fight in a side battle, their special abilities do not reactivate.

Fight Each Other - Default Conditions
•   Instant abilities activate only once in the same Battle Phase.
•   Ongoing abilities apply to the entire field battle.

Please post items to be corrected here. Thank you!

Should we consider this thread authoritative over the REG?  (If there's elder confirmation on a post)

Yes. This thread is to be regarded as an appendix to the REG (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/REG/) that lists its errors, omissions and additions since it was last updated.

What happens when this thread gets so large it's hard to make sure I didn't miss something?

If the new REG (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/REG/) does not get released in the near future, and this thread grows to the point where it's cumbersome to read through it all, the eventual plan is to organize it in some fashion and convert it to a downloadable .pdf file.

Set-aside Card
A set-aside card is a type of enhancement that includes a special ability allowing a character to be placed outside the Field of Play for a number of turns. A set-aside card is identi fied by the words “set-aside” in the special ability of the card. The effects that a character gains while in a set-aside area remain with the character when he returns to the Field of Play until the character is discarded or returned to a card pile (draw or discard). Moreover, the gained effect cannot be negated when the charac ter enters the Field of Battle.

Added clarification:
"On return" is implied to mean "when returned at the completion of the specified number of turns."

Confirmed by Elder: Bryon

The playtesters seem to be in agreement:

when a card says "on return" it means "when returned at the completion of the specified number of turns, ..."

In other words, the "on return" clause refers to the return that happens as the specified set aside period ends.  It does not mean "Any time this character is returned by any ability,"

Quote from: REG, as defined in the rulebook
Opponent
An opponent is any other player in the game. However, the word opponent can be specific or general: “Opponent”, “your opponent’”, or “opponent's” means the other player whose character is fighting your character in battle. However, “an opponent”, “any opponent”, “one opponent”, “opponents' ”, or “each opponent” is any player in the game other than you.

Clarification:
An opponent is any other player in the game. However, the word opponent can be specific or general.  Normally, when a single opponent is indicated, the player may select any other player and target him or his cards.  “Opponents' ” or “each opponent” refer to all other players in the game.

During the Battle Phase, however, the specific “opponent”, “your opponent’”, or “opponent's” means the other player engaging you in battle.  The general “an opponent”, “any opponent”, or “one opponent” can still be selected by the player.

I see nothing in there about prevent dealing with a cards targets. Prevent simply stops another cards special ability from activating, that is all.
Great observation.  That is why, beginning after nationals, Jerusalem Tower will be ruled a protect, rather than a prevent.

JT is a prevent now, but only because that is the status quo/ how it is classified in the REG.

For some history: JT was written before the game had clarified the differences between prevent and protect.  Once those differences were made clear, we had to go back and fit all the old cards into one ability or the other.  Enoch was a problem, since he uses the word "prevented" but is actually a protect ability.  JT was also a difficult one to place, since it had "no opponent may" similar to the old wording for prevents, and it ALSO had a restriction for targets (your draw pile), which is only ever found on protects.  We chose to classify it as a prevent.  In retrospect, I don't think that was the best choice.

Since JT mentions the targets of the abilities, and says opponent can't remove them (and it doesn't even specify which abilities it supposedly prevents), we've decided to classify it as a protect.  This has a Rob stamp.  Again, it will go into effect beginning after nationals.

This category includes all cards with a special ability that allows or directs a player to draw a card.  This category implicitly includes search.  Cards that allow cards to be exchanged with another card do not fall into this category, even though exchanged cards often can be added to your hand.  Cards that are exchanged require you to search for a card, not draw a card (see Search, Reveal, or Exchange).

Does negating draw abilities also negate search abilities then, or is this outdated?

This is more of a clarification than a correction.

"Look" is it's own ability, similar, but different than "Search" abilities.  The elders have discussed this and we are in agreement.  Some players have interpreted the following passage to mean that "Look" and "Search" are the same:

Instant Special Abilities > Search, Reveal, or Exchange > General Description
Quote from: REG
You may not look at cards in any draw pile or discard pile (other than the top card of the discard pile) unless a special ability on a card allows a player to search a deck (see Beginning a Game).

We've decided to update this portion of the REG to clarify the intent:

"You may not look at cards in any draw pile or discard pile (other than the top card of the discard pile) unless a special ability allows you to search for or look at cards, or a special ability reveals a player's cards, from a deck or discard pile (see Beginning a Game)."

Evil Characters return to owner’s territory. • Identifiers: NT, Based on Prophecy • Verse: Revelation 20:14-15 • Availability: Apostles booster packs (Rare)

The errata currently listed makes it appear that VoEF will return all evil characters (in battle) to their owner's territory.  The errata should only fix the name of Kingdoms of the World.

I believe that the reason it is on there is because most of the time when a card is discarded, all non-lost soul cards are discarded.  For this card, the cards on the sites are discarded and the cards in Kingdom aren't, therefore clarifing possible confusion within one card.

If a player controls more than 2 sites and I choose not to discard one that has an EC guarding it, then VoEF will still discard the "guards" even if I don't discard the Site.  It's only redundant if you discard the Site that is being guarded.

The Official REG Link:   http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/REG/
 (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/REG/)

While browsing the new REG (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/REG/) (Thank you so much for this by the way Mike and co.) I've noticed a few little mistakes and omissions. This isn't to be mean and pick on those who wrote the REG, but rather to help make it better.  :)

Since the old thread was for the original REG, it might be best to start a new thread for REG corrections. Also, when posting errors, it'd help to provide a direct link to the error in question (right click on a link and click "Open in new tab/window" so you can get a specific URL)

Hero is Defeated (http://www.redemptionreg.com/REG/Master/gloss_heroisdefeated.htm), this entry is incomplete. <-- There is no definition - it was s till being debated when I started the glossary entry. I kinda doubt anyone has resolved a definition yet.

Siegeworks (http://www.redemptionreg.com/REG/Master/siegeworksgoodff2.htm), this seems to be missing a "depicts a weapon" identifier, when there are 3 easy to see bows in the art. [Corrected on cards 11/26/2011 - needs to be added to glossary yet.  Also added "based on prophecy" to identifier of all three varients.]

We could use a list of cards with Joseph in title or reference, primarily the second group as there is no easy way to find those.

Something I've noticed, why do we have duplicate entries in the glossary? For example: Judges Enhancements (http://www.redemptionreg.com/REG/Master/gloss_judgesenhancements.htm) just links to Judges Enhancement. Hyperlinks are provided to alternate spellings on cards. Some use one, some use the other. This allows both to jump and (eventually) see the same glossary entry.

There is no list of Canaanites yet, and King of Tyrus (http://www.redemptionreg.com/REG/Master/kingoftyruspi.htm) does not have a Canaanite identifier. (He was confirmed to be one in the Tower of Thebez article (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/red_game_articles_2011-1.php)) I have added a list to the glossary but will not upload it yet (must be compiled). Until then, the list is here (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/redemption-official-rules/reg-updates/msg451801/#msg451801).

Evil Character is Defeated (http://www.redemptionreg.com/REG/Master/gloss_evilcharacterisdefeated.htm), not sure if this was incomplete, or if there is an extra bullet point.

For future refence to REG users: Successful Block (http://www.redemptionreg.com/REG/Master/gloss_successfulblock.htm), Successful Rescue Attempt (http://www.redemptionreg.com/REG/Master/gloss_successfulrescueattempt.htm), Failed Rescue Attempt (http://www.redemptionreg.com/REG/Master/gloss_failedrescueattempt.htm), and Failed Block (http://www.redemptionreg.com/REG/Master/gloss_failedblock.htm) are all under construction as well.

Taunt is nonexistant. There is no reference in the glossary. Also, there is no mention in Goliath's description (http://www.redemptionreg.com/REG/Master/goliathp.htm (http://www.redemptionreg.com/REG/Master/goliathp.htm)).  [Taunt will be added to the REG glossary. You can see what will appear here (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/redemption-official-rules/reg-updates/msg451801/#msg451801). I also corrected Goliath (P).]

Quote from: REG 2.0
There is no maximum of cards to a deck as long as it contains the appropriate number of Lost Souls; one Lost Soul for every six cards over fifty (50). The Proverbs 22:14 ("2-line") or Proverbs 22:14 ("3-line") Lost Souls card counts as one Lost Soul for deck building purposes.

I really hope this is true...but I know it's not. It says that in both T1 and T2 deck building rules.

AFAIK, the deck limits are still in place. Thanks for pointing that out.

One thing I noticed while building my Canaanite defense is that while several sites are listed with the identifier Canaan, there isn't a comprehensive list of Canaanite Sites for Fortify Site. The following should be considered Canaanite Sites:

Hormah

Jericho
Sodom
Pit of Dothan
Canaan

Why should Promised Land be considered Caananite? Is the United States of America a Native American site?

The verse for Promised Land is from the beginning of Joshua, before any of the Promised Land was captured by the Israelites. Cities within the Promised Land with verses after the conquests (Samaria, Jerusalem, etc.) are not considered Canaanite.

Demonic Stronghold is listed incorrectly:

Type: Fortress • Brigade: None • Ability: None • Class: None • Special Ability: If holder's demon captures a Hero, place that Hero here. Holder's demons gain 1/1 for each Hero here. • Play As: If holder's demon captures a Hero, place that Hero here. Increase holder's demons 1/1 for each Hero here. Demonic Stronghold may hold any number of captured Heroes. • Identifiers: Play to territory.

The bold bit is supposed to be an identifier. check the card image: http://www.redemptionreg.com/REG/LinkedDocuments/Demonic%20Stronghold%20(AW).gif (http://www.redemptionreg.com/REG/LinkedDocuments/Demonic%20Stronghold%20(AW).gif)

Changes made since 2011 Nationals:

Verses removed from the following cards (11/26/2011):

Jacob (FF) Play as: May band to a silver brigade Hero or may play a Genesis enhancement [play an enhancement].

Siegeworks (all 3 varieties) - Attributes: OT, Based on Prophecy, Depicts a Weapon

Canaanites (added)
Caananites were composed of several different groups who lived in the land of Canaan. However, only certain ones actually called themselves Canaanites.  Genesis chapter 10 mentions the man named Canaan, who was the ancestor of the Canaanites.
"Canaan was the father of Sidon his firstborn, and of the Hittites, Jebusites, Amorites, Girgashites, Hivites, Arkites, Sinites, Arvadites, Zemarites and Hamathites. Later the Canaanite clans scattered and the borders of Canaan reached from Sidon toward Gerar as far as Gaza, and then toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboyim, as far as Lasha." - Genesis 10:15-19
Any tribes and clans in this list are deemed Canaanites in Redemption™, as are subgroups of these tribes and clans.  For example, the Gibeonites were a subgroup of the Amorites and Hivites, so they are Canaanites. These include:
•   (Good) Ahimelek the Hittite (RA2), Ishmaiah the Gibeonite (RA2), King Hiram (FF), Rahab (Wo), Uriah (AL), Uriah (AU), Uriah (L), Uriah (UL), and Uriah the Hittite (RA2)
•    (Evil) Abimelech (Pa), Abimelech (RA2), Bera, King of Sodom (Pa), Controlling Demon (Ap), Gibeonite Delegates (RA2), Jezebel (BL), Jezebel (BU), Jezebel (L), Jezebel (RA2), Jezebel (UL), King of Tyrus (Pi), King of Tyrus (Wa), Lot's Daughters (Wo), Lot's Wife (Wo), Prince of Tyrus (Pi), Shechem (F), Shechem (RA2), Sisera (Ki), The Woman of Thebez (RA2), and The Woman of Thebez (Wo)

Canaanite Sites (added)
The following Redemption™ cards are considered from Caanan:
•   Canaan (RA2), Hormah (FF), Jericho (Pi), Pit of Dothan (Wo), Promised Land (Pa), and Sodom (Wa)

Taunt (added)
Taunt is a character attribute printed on the card. Taunt is a battle challenge performed by an Evil Character. A taunt targets an opponent’s Hero. You can only taunt when your opponent has no lost souls to rescue. The taunt it is your only battle for the turn. The opponent can accept or decline the taunt. If the taunt is declined, the Hero loses the battle and gains the special ability specified with the taunt attribute  (e.g., “place opponent’s Hero beneath deck”).
The following Evil Characters can taunt:
•   Goliath (P)

Goliath (P) has a corrected attribute list (contains "taunt").

Royal Parade (FF) is classified as "Involves Music"

This is not so much a correction as a request if it is possible.

Could we get a new folder on the sidebar that sorts cards by the book of the Bible they reference?I currently have no reliable way to sort cards in this manner.

That is beyond my scope of work. Sorry.

Set-aside enhancements
A set-aside enhancement has the phrase “set a (type of character) aside” in its special ability. A set-aside enhancement can be played on a character of matching brigade in your territory during your Preparation Phase or Discard Phase. Its special ability activates even though it is played outside of battle. You may also play them in battle according to the rules of initiative. You can direct the effect of the set-aside card to any character you own and currently control. You may set aside a character with multiple set-aside cards if they are played at the same time.

The bolded sentence needs to be removed.

The point remains, it's missing instruction on what happens to the set-aside Enhancement. I know that it wouldn't be strictly necessary if it goes the other way since that's the default for territory-class Enhancements, but it would be needed for clarity since it's been played to set-aside since the dawn of Redemption.

I agree with Pol that it would be best to clarify what to do with the set-aside enhancement, whether to send it with the character (like WC-enhs) or discard it (like all other enhs).

Taunt needs to be added to the REG. Below is the accurate rule for Taunt taken from the Disciples card box. Please disregard the inaccurate definition found here (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/redemption-official-rules/reg-updates/msg451801/#msg451801).

Rule for the Taunt Identifier:

Taunt: If no opponent has a lost soul in his territory, you may make a "Taunt battle challenge" with an evil character that has a Taunt identifier. A Taunt battle challenge is begun by placing the evil character into battle and declaring an opponent. The opponent may accept the Taunt battle challenge by placing a Hero into battle to fight the evil character. If the evil character wins the Taunt battle challenge, activate the special ability in the parentheses after the Taunt identifier. (If you decline any kind of battle challenge, you lose the battle challenge).

The Official REG Link:
http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/REG/

Thanks to the tireless work of the Redemption Elders with special thanks to Gabe and Jordan in recent weeks, we have a new REG available.  It may not be completely locked down yet. Even so, it's so much better than what we had, I wanted to make it public.  As I wrote to Gabe this week, if there are some errors our fans will help us find them.  Moreover, we will be able to update this new file much faster than the previous REG that was very difficult for us to change due to technical issues.  It can be found at the download page here:

For those that are interested in what has changed, it's mostly updates and clarifying language. Many abilities were grouped under "return" (shuffle, withdraw, etc.) and those now all have their own entry. Entries were also added for a couple new keywords that we're applying to already existing abilities. We've also expanded the rules regarding captured demons, which now applies to all non-humans that are captured.

The following is a comprehensive list of changes that were made between the web REG and the release of the new PDF REG v1.0.0.

Entries were added for the following Instant Abilities;

Present
Release
Return to Hand
Return to Territory
Search
Shuffle
Taunt
Topdeck (Underdeck)

Entries were added for the following Ongoing Abilities;

The exception for captured demons was expanded to include all non-human characters.

The special ability "Gain Access" was changed to "Site Access".

Special Abilities were removed from the definitions.

The following entries were removed because they are unneeded;

Power Enhancement
Sin
Site Maintenance
Specific Characters

Awesome! Thank you for this.

Will the online version be updated anymore, or is this PDF the official ruling document we should be using?

Moreover, we will be able to update this new file much faster than the previous REG that was very difficult for us to change due to technical issues.

I'm assuming these technical issues apply to the detailed card database as well? If so, do you guys have any current plans to revamp that section of the REG?

*EDIT*

Forget my last question. I completely forgot about the RedemptionLive visualizer.

*EDIT 2*

I'm taking another look at the Visualizer, and while it does work REALLY well, I've noticed a few things like missing identifiers. (Hormah is not listed as a Canaanite site for example)
How quickly can this site be updated compared to the old REG database?

http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/REG/ is no longer being updated. We've moved to the easier to manage PDF version. The PDF is the official ruling document going forward and the only place updates and corrections will be made.

The technical issues involve both the expensive software that neither Cactus or any of the active elders currently own and the cumbersome process of updating the previous web version and residing database using that software.

There are plans in place to revamp the card database. There's extensive work being done to update all errata and "play as" entries. Once complete we plan to use an excel spreadsheet for all card data. The final step is to build out the existing card images online so they are still available.

We haven't ironed out the details yet. Our first priority was to get an updated REG available to the public. The second half of that is to update and fix the "play as" entries and online rule book. While a card database is important, there are number of fan made spreadsheets and card visualizers available to hold us over until we get to that step.

This is the visualizer I'm referring to:

If this one is easy to update, I see no reason why this wouldn't work as the official card database. It makes it so easy to sort through all the cards, and provides the same information that the old REG does.

I've been waiting over 10 minutes and it's still not loaded. I can be 99.9% sure that the problem is not my equipment or internet connection. While it might be convenient for some users to access from their personal PC once it's finally loaded, it doesn't seem like an easily accessible solution for all users. Also, the very fact that it cannot be loaded on a tablet or mobile device means it will be mostly obsolete in just a few short years.

The Visualizer is a pet project of Mike Wolfe.  The fact that it is an ongoing project makes it likely that changes could still be made there relatively easily.  I would suggest sending him a PM (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/profile/?u=68) of whatever mistakes you find.

Rob has officially ruled that Covenants/Curses are treated similar to DAEs:

"A Covenant/Curse is both an Enhancement and an Artifact, and can be targeted as either (in hand, deck, or discard pile) until it is played, held, activated, or placed in Artifact pile as one or the other. A Covenant/Curse that is played or held as an Enhancement can no longer be targeted as an Artifact, and a Covenant/Curse that is activated or placed in the Artifact pile can no longer be targeted as an Enhancement. They are still always targetable as a Covenant/Curse."

Announced: 10/17/12
Update: Pending next REG Update

The PDF REG 1.0.1 was released today. The following changes were made:

Capture and Convert have had an addition made to "default conditions" for how to treat identifiers.
Choose Opponent was updated to reflect that it is a combination of Withdraw and Present.
Special conditions for Draw was updated to reflect what happens when a draw is negated.
Rescue was added as an instant special ability.
Toss was added as an ongoing special ability.
The definition of Battle Challenge was updated.
The definition of Covenant and Curse were updated.
The definition of Defeat was updated for clarity.
Correction made to the definition of Exodus Hero.
Generic Cards has two omissions added - Seraph (RA) and Philistine Armor Bearer (FF)
Correction made to the definition of Herod in the Title.
The definition of Instead was updated to reflect how cards with an end of battle condition are treated.
Added King Amaziah (RA2) to the list of good Kings and Queens of Judah and removed Herod Agrippa II (TP) from the evil list.
The definition of Opponent was updated to reflect that ownership and control are required.
Elijah was added to the list of Prophets.
Added the definition of Special Initiative.
The definition of Warrior-class and Weapon-class were updated to reflect the wording on the Kings insert card.

The next update will take place after Nationals, or after the new starter decks are released.

General Description
A toss ability allows a player to discard an enhancement to decrease an opposing character in battle.

This has to be on a new card, because I've NEVER seen this ability before.

Also, something happened between Toss and Site Access... quite a bit of text is missing.

*EDIT*

After reading the definition of Toss... I'm REALLY hoping some new brown cards get this ability. Decrease is such a cool strategy.

Additionally, under Default Conditions for Toss:

Enhancements disards to the toss ability must come from hand.
The strength of the discarded enhancement is determined by the face valye of the card.

First is missing a "c" in "discards".  Second needs to change to "value". :)

Special conditions for Draw was updated to reflect what happens when a draw is negated.

The portion from the new REG:
Quote
If a draw ability is negated, return the drawn cards into their previous order on the deck. If this cannot be done, shuffle the drawn cards together and topdeck them.

This does not say to undo abilities, nor whether cards played off of a "Play" ability are returned to deck.  Both of those have been sources of contention in the past, but this isn't clear enough to answer the questions currently.  What are the rulings, so that the wording can be updated?

Your approach to how you believe we should manage the REG indicates you believe we should include every possible scenario under every entry. That is not the belief of the elders, nor the way we chose to move forward with the REG starting back with the online version 2.0.

We do not choose to explain that Negate undoes an ability under the entry for Draw. If you want to learn what Negate does, then you need to look under the entry for Negate. Similarly, if you want to understand how Play abilities interact with another ability, look under the entry for Play.

Gabe, I don't think that we have to have every single card combination and scenario handled, but it seems the major interactions should be included.  This is a major scenario that is very common and can happen in almost all decks currently played, as drawing is in just about every deck and so are negates.

I did check the other entries, and there is nothing to indicate that the cards would not be returned in the case of a 'play' ability, and there is nothing in negate about cascading at all, let alone about undoing the abilities on cards that are returned to decks.  Based on the resources provided, a player new to the game would not know how these abilities interact.

That's my point, I'm not trying to be a pain, I just wanted to point out to you that the REG is not clear on this issue.  And considering it is a major rule that also has the potential to happen just about any game, I think it makes sense to include it somewhere in the REG, particularly since the rule has never been written anywhere except scattered posts on the boards here.

I don't know if anyone else has a problem with this, but I find it is often very annoying to have to load up the visualizer to look at cards every time I want to check a special ability.  It can take a while for it to load up, and I find will freeze on my laptop a good amount of the time.  I would much prefer if we could have somewhere for quick reference of the cards.

Ah, okay.  I know of a few other Visualizer cards that are incorrect; should have looked at the info identifier on the right  :-\

Under Medo-Persian Sites on the REG, it says that no cards refer to Medo-Persian Sites; however, The Ram with Two Horns sets aside an opponent's hero for each of owner's Media sites (listed under Medo-Persian Sites as being one).  Persian Presidents is CBN if Lion's Den is in play, and Lion's Den is also listed in the REG as a Medo-Persian Site.

The reason it says that is that there is no card yet that says it targets a general Medo-Persian site (i.e. "Search deck for a Medo-Persian site", etc.). There are cards that target specific Medo-Persian sites (as you mentioned), but that is slightly different.

Face down cards that in the the field of play will no longer be considered "out of play". This is an archaic rule that's unintuitive. While it may have had a purpose at one time, it does not any longer. We will remove face down cards from the definition of "Out of Play" in the next REG update. Additionally, we will add the following definition for "Face Down Cards".

Face Down Cards

Face Down cards are cards in territories, battle, and set-aside areas that are face down either due to special ability, or are inactive artifacts in an artifact pile. Face down cards have no abilities, brigade, titles, or identifiers while they are face down. The only known attribute of a face down card is the card type. Face down cards are only targetable by abilities that specify they can target face down cards or inactive artifacts, or cards that can target any or all cards in a location. When a face down card enters battle, it is immediately flipped face up, unless otherwise specified by the special ability that flipped it face down.
