Title: If Texas Held The 1st Annual Everything-Is-Bigger Cube Draft & Sealed Con?
Post by: MrMiYoda on January 09, 2018, 06:38:13 PM
Now...it is but a dream....

Who will seriously be attending? Are players ready to do it in 2018? What will be the preferred weekend dates (Friday night, Saturday whole day)?

Thinktank!

I dunno... Sounds a little boring to me.  ;)

If we did do another "...only" tournament my vote would be limited formats. Possibly like the crazy drafts we have done in the past or even multiple drafts alongside sealed and potentially a Cube draft.

Type 2 has more of a devoted following than the majority of Type 1 players, (I mean you have to be pretty devoted to play Type 2 Multi) so It would really come down to how out of State people feel about coming down for it, and if we can get the Texas playgroup ready for the intensity of it. Limited may have more of a draw and be more interesting if say it happened shortly after the new set release whenever that is so that players (and National Tournament organizers) can get an idea of of how the new set will impact drafting with large groups and what sets will be in a draft for a larger tournament.

As for preferred weekend dates I think a Friday Night, Saturday whole day seems like a good plan.

I'm all for it overall.

So we are thinking more on the lines of Closed-Deck-Only tournament, right?

That basically what I was thinking. It might just be my preference but I feel that It would likely have more of a draw than Type 1 for out of state players. I may be wrong though. Community input may say otherwise. I just personally really enjoy closed deck formats, and if the timing was aligned with the release of a new set it could be a great way to gain info both player and host wise as to how something like booster draft should look with the new pack being introduced based on the experience at that tournament and input from participants.

I could see a type 1 tournament work, but only in more of a central location. I would definitely do my best to get there, but the odds of me being able to get in two trips down to Texas this year are improbable.

I would be down with hosting or at least providing product for a Sealed Only. I have a Cube ready to use. I have lots of Booster Packs. Would love to fiddle with the progressive Sealed Deck idea I have had for a while where you add a pack to your deck after each round of play. Would also love to do Teams Sealed. I am down with this but would probably like to do it next year as we will be up to our neck in getting ready for Nationals this year.

Inspired by this thought, how does this event sound?

"The 1st Annual PROGRESSIVE Cube Draft & Sealed Back-to-Back Con"
OR
"The 1st Annual Everything-Is-Bigger Cube Draft & Sealed Con"

Or a better and more exciting title?

Saturday night would be ideal.  Let's make a move on this Roy.  It could be very helpful in teaching our new players.

We could do a test run locally with all the new and current players in San Antonio and beyond. We can start giving the event a formal title soon as or if we will ever pursue it on a national level. Houston might still be the ideal venue for a national.event of this kind (right, Travis B?). We can organize one impromptu local for each host every Friday and do Sealed or Booster as personal spending permits. You can manage the tourneys.while I teach new players. We can start next Friday and/or Saturday, and every Friday and/or Saturday thereafter.

Meanwhile, we can already fast-track Juan, Travis M, etc to get started with hosting their first tourneys. That'll cover each Friday/Saturday that needs a unique impromptu local host.

LOL, might.as.well let Joe.and Marcus live in Texas for a couple of months til nats since they will most likely do their long drives just to attend locals all over Texas.
