Proxy or custom cards are not tournament legal

Most players were probably never aware that there was an option to use custom cards in Redemption tournaments.  In fact, several elders on the boards have ruled over the years that they are not tournament legal.  Nevertheless, some tournament hosts have allowed them in the past.  It was not a well known rule and I regret there has been some confusion about it.  The ruling exception that I conceded to was that custom cards were allowed at the tournament hosts discretion provided the player owned a real copy of the card, that wasn't also being used in the tournament, and that could be produced on request.

Most players never used custom or proxy cards so it was rarely relevant.  Even so, I realized at National's last year that opponents were put at a disadvantage if the person they were playing was using customized cards that looked different from what they were used to seeing.  To avoid confusion and frustration, I am once and for all disallowing custom cards.

The rule is: only official Redemption cards published by Cactus Game Design will be legal for tournament play.  Proxy cards (regardless of how closely they might resemble a true Redemption card) are not legal for tournament play.

Thank you for your understanding.

Blessings,
Rob Anderson

As awesome as custom cards can be (especially when well done) I agree that this is a good decision for official tournament play.

That being said, by all means use those sweet custom cards in non-tournament games!  8)

*Edit* And give your opponent some grace if he needs extra time or makes a mistake due to not recognizing a custom card.

Lol, just when I got a sweet looking borderless Fearless Traveler. Oh well. Glad there is an official ruling now!

Realizing that it wasn't the standard blows me away. I'm very glad to have this set in stone.

I just assumed it was already a rule since every other game I play has the same rules.
They seem pretty lame as fighters maybe we should challenge them to a dance off or a redemption game

Clarification to this point:
Other card games allow players to "alter" real cards by an artist painting on them.

The qualifications are as follows:
-thickness cannot be different (to keep the cards from being "marked")
-"Name" and "Ability" must still be readable as proof of the validity of the "real" card (basically so a person doesnt take a Lost Soul and alter it to a Goliath Promo)
-Players are encouraged to present altered cards to judges to verify that the altercations havent distorted the card so much that it ceases to be recognized as a genuine card

The heart of the question is: I can play with a card that was signed by a person (thus being a genuine card "altered" by someone), could we get an official rule to follow for alter genuine cards. TY

I am against card alterations in anyway. Our sets have only been out for a couple months before the biggest tournaments of the year. Players are trying to get accustomed to the art and names of new cards. Altering cards creates a significant advantage for the player using the altered cards, it makes it more difficult on judges and it causes delays in a game that has time limits.

(If this means I can't play with a signed card for total clarity, that is fine by me. If I got a signature I don't really wanna wreck the card by playing it anyways.)

Unless the policy has changed you can currently play with signed cards.

Signed cards are acceptable.

So, am I to infer that signed cards are acceptable but art alterations are not?
I was thinking about commissioning some cards to be have extended boarders.

I don't think you have to infer it. That is the ruling.   ;)

I believe we added the "no custom cards" ruling to the tournament guide.

Thanks, TG.
My confusion was, I thought that the "custom cards" were referring to cards that were NOT actually printed by Cactus. So, if I understand you, both player-printed Redemption cards and Cactus-printed Redemption cards with altercations (minus signatures) are considered to be "custom" for terms of tournament play?

Correct.

Signed cards are okay, and usually when I'm playing booster draft I use a set of generic Lost Souls with my name on them so they don't get mixed up in a multi-player booster.

However, if I take a marker and change the appearance of a Cactus-printed card, that would not be allowed to be used in a tournament game.
