Welcome to the home of the
Redemption Online Official Tournament (ROOT)!
All are welcome to join regardless of experience and ability.  If you are a master, then this is the place to play the other top players from around the country to keep your skills sharp before the big tournaments of summer.  If you are an average player, then this is the place to play against a variety of different decks as an opportunity for you to see all the many strategies that are available in this great game.  If you are a beginner, then this is a place for you to learn how to play the game with people who are friendly and willing to teach you.

Online Redemption will now be its own RNRS category!  Yes, you read that right.  The top 3 players at the end of each tournament (approximately monthly) will now receive RNRS points (10,5,and 3 respectively).  These will accumulate throughout the year, and there will be an overall online champion awarded at the end of the Redemption calendar year during the National tournament.

So how do you get started?  First you'll need to download the free program for playing Redemption online.  It is quick and easy and is all explained here.  Next it is recommended that you download the free program called Hamachi which makes it easier to connect to people.  It is even quicker and easier, and can be found here.  Then you are ready to join the tournament.  Simply reply to this thread and tell us that you want in.  Join any networks that you choose and start playing.

Let's give a big "Thank you!" to Rob Anderson and Cactus Game Design!  Without them we wouldn't have this great game, and it is with their support that ROOT is possible.  Management of the tournament is currently being done by Soul Seeker, BrianGabe, and myself, so if you have any questions, feel free to PM us.

ROOT Constitution
There are some aspects to ROOT which are somewhat flexible, and which can change from month to month depending on the decisions of the ROOT leadership team.  These would include: how many points winning a game is worth, how many bonus games a person can play in a week, how to handle ghosting situations, and even whether everyone is in a single group or split up into different groups.  The ROOT leadership team is responsible for making these decisions on a monthly basis in order to deal with any issues that may arise in the tournament that need to be dealt with in order to maintain the fundamental aspects of ROOT.  This is done with simply a majority vote of the 3 leaders.  However, those fundamental aspects of ROOT may only be changed by a unanimous decision of the ROOT founder (Soul Seeker) and all members of the Leadership team who are current at the time of the change.

These are the fundamental aspects of ROOT.
1 - ROOT was started as a place for people to be able to play in a tournament who do not have the opportunity to play in physical tournaments.  Therefore, it must always remain open for anyone, anywhere to be able to participate.

2 - Although everyone wants to win a tournament that they enter, the focus of ROOT must always stay on having "Fun and Fellowship" with each other.

3 - The purpose of the prizes in ROOT must always be to increase both the number of participants and the amount of participation.  The RNRS points are motivational for the people who consistently win, and the prize packs must be distributed in some way that it weighted in favor of players who do not consistently win, but who consistently try.

4 - The purpose of points in ROOT must also be to increase the amount of participation as well as to differentiate success.  Therefore, players should always get some points even if they lose every game.

5 - The winner of ROOT each month should be legitimate.  Therefore, winning should naturally be rewarded with more points than losing.  The system of games should also be set up in such a way that the winner had to play the other top players during the month in order to reach and stay in 1st place.

6 - The Leadership Team of ROOT must always be made up of 3 REPs (Real Experienced Players), and at least 1 of them must always be a Redemption Elder.  Each of them will serve a 6-month term (offset from the other 2 members of the Leadership Team).

7 - Logistical considerations must be made to maintain issues that will likely lead to increased "Fun and Fellowship" and participation.  This would include requiring both RTS and Hamachi so that people may easily connect and play with each other.

8 - Logistical considerations must also be made to prevent issues that will likely lead to decreased "Fun and Fellowship" and participation.  This would include limiting the use of Haman's Plot to 3 official games per month, so as to avoid abuse of that card in ways that would not be possible in a traditional tournament.

Players:
The idea here is to make this tournament available to everyone to join and enjoy.  Anyone may join the tournament at any point during the month.  If a player has to drop out of the tournament, they need to state that they will not be participating in the next week of competition when they report the score for the previous week.  Otherwise they will forfeit their opportunity to win any prizes for that month.

Games:
The idea here is to make the tournament accessible to the largest number of players by focusing on T1-2p.
Typically games are played on RTS using Hamachi, although both players can agree to alternatives (ie. AIM, in-person, etc.).
Typically games are T1-2p, although both players can agree to alternatives (ie. T2-2p).
Each player gets at least 1 "Swiss" game per week.

Swiss Games:
ROOT will be a purely Swiss format, like a live Redemption Tournament. Each week you will be paired with a person having the closest record to your own (that you haven't played yet) and the person with the best record (with first tiebreaker being head-to-head, second tiebreaker being differential) will win the tournament. Swiss games must be played before the end of the week (usually midnight on Sunday nights), and should be reported by both players.  The first week these will be random (within the groups of "returning players" and "new players"), and each additional week, they will be based on rank.  The assignments for these games will be posted each week by Tuesday morning at 7am EST (and will not be repaired if points change later).  Scores for these games need to be reported.  There is a time limit of 1 hour and 15 for the official games.  This time limit may be waived at the beginning of a game if both players agree to do so.

The Scoring System
The idea of this scoring system is to encourage people to play games.  Points are awarded after one of the players confirms the outcome of the "official game" in this ROOT thread, or sends a PM to the person running ROOT.  All scores must be reported by Tuesday morning at 3am EST

X=Your Score - Opponent's Score

"Swiss" game win                        = 4 pts / X differential
"Swiss" game lockout winning        = 3 pts / X differential
"Swiss" game tie                         = 2.5 pts / 0 differential
"Swiss" game lockout losing           = 2 pt / X differential
"Swiss" game loss                        = 1 pts / X differential

Ghost                      Winner = Full points / +3 differential,  Loser = 0 points / -5 differential
Leaving a game      If both players agree on the circumstances, the person staying = Full
points, the person leaving = 0 points
If both players disagree on the circumstances, usually both players = 0 points
Disconnects             If you quit an official game and don't give a valid reason for it, then you will
receive a strike. If it happens three times in a month, you will not be
allowed to participate in ROOT the following month.
