Title: ROOT for August/September
Post by: soul seeker on July 31, 2014, 09:46:23 AM
Winner: RTSManiac
Second: birukfm

Hey Everyone,
A ROOT tournament will be organized for August, and we are going to be trying several new things to see how it goes.  I plan/hope to use Lackey as the main way to play the games. Also, MJB is helping me figure out how to use "challengeboards.net" to try and get more consistent games and move the tournament along.  I will report more on that after I investigate the site and get some more knowledge.

When: The tournament will start AFTER Nationals.  (If all the players want to start sooner, then I'm willing to start Aug. 3)
Cards:  Legal decks with legal cards.  (Yes, the new ones will be legal IF they are available on Lackey.)

As I look the above mentioned sites over, it would be helpful to see who plans on participating.

Post-Nats update:
1. Challengeboards.net looks straight forward enough for what we want to try* but players have to sign up for membership.  Are the current signed up players (Alex, Red, redemption collector, jbeers, Westy, RTSManiac, Reth, birukfm, pilgrim14, dermo4christ) willing to join that board?  If not, then I can run the trial* manually.
2. MJB is working hard at getting the new cards into lackey, but patience for the next week or two is encouraged.

August Tournament Trial* Run.
1. We will be doing a round robin.  The only time limit is August 27th to get your matches in.  The last 4 days will be a Top 4 Cut to play for 1st through 4th.  Ideally, I hope everyone can play each other twice before Top Cut.
2. Since we are trying a new tournament format, I also plan to try another new mode of play.  RTS and Lackey will both be a legal mode of play as determined both opponents.  If allowing both causes too much headache or division then we will revisit this issue.

Participants:
1. Alex
2. Red
3. jbeers
4. Westy
5. RTSManiac
6. Reth
7. birukfm
8. pilgrim14
9. dermo4christ

Is lackey easy to use?
Good question.  From what I have read, the answer is yes. Personal experience: I don't know. (I've not played Redemption online in quite a while.)
EDIT:  Alex, I removed your above question so this could be the second post that could keep track of games until everyone agrees to sign in to challengeboards.net.

Player:  Opponents faced (results)
Alex:
birukfm: Red (W 5-4), Reth (L 5-4), RTSManiac (L 0-5)
dermo4christ:
jbeers:
Pilgrim14: RTSManic (L 5-0)
Red:  birukfm (L 5-4?)
Reth:  birukfm (W 5-4)
RTSManiac: Pilgrim (W 5-0), birukfm (W 5-0)
Westy:

Top Cut Matchups:  (See page 2 of this thread for breakdown)
1. RTSManiac  vs. 4. Red                         Result: RTSManiac Winner
2. Reth  vs. 3. birukfm                             Result: birukfm

Championship Round:
1. RTSManiac  vs.  3. birukfm

Champion: RTSManiac

I would prefer to start after nationals but otherwise.

The new cards will be in Lackey as soon as possible after their release. At that point the plugin upgrade process should also be much streamlined so we will be able to keep up with the early church as it gets released.

I can also get the early church packs set up for booster if folks want.

Is lackey easy to use?

I have found the deck builder is a little more cumbersome in Lackey (particularly the search function), but it does have way more functions than RTS such as revealing top/bottom X cards, the ability to select groups of cards and more shortcut keys.

The MP option of Lackey is also very cool, and I believe MJB was working on making the cards smaller so there's more room on the table.

I would also be interested but do not yet know which cards are illegal yet. Can this be read somewhere here or in Wiki?

Lackey in my opinion is very easy to use (the challanging part besides deck building and game play for me would be the time difference).

No cards are illegal at this time. The basic question is how quickly we can get the new Early Church cards into the system and make them legal. In the past someone (semi-)official has made a list a new cards and abilities available on the boards shortly after release.

ROOT needs to pick a standard and stick with it, as some people only want to use RTS, while others can only use Lackey. It seems that soulseeker has decided that ROOT will be used primarily with Lackey from here on out, so unless he says otherwise, I would assume that RTS-only players will have to abstain.

on the challenge boards, what do we do after we sign up. and when do the games officially start. and is it on the challenge boards that we find who we are going to be playing. and finally what is a robin round. i am new to ROOT.

PS you have me on the list and i am just confirming that i will play.

Me neither. Furthermore I'll be on vacation for 3 weeks beginning end of August so I wonder whether it will be reasonable to join at all?

Since I am completely new, where will all the appropriate match setups and other relevent information be obtainable from?

I knew this would be an issue when everyone opted to wait after Nats.  All I can say is do your best.   :)

If I understand the site correctly (MJB may can explain it better), then I would create a room called "Redemption" and you guys match up & report your games there and it automatically gives an ELO out and ranks the players.

I'm assuming the challenge boards will let you find games there, but here will work as well.

Round Robin is a tournament style that allows you to play everyone once.  Like Westy said, that would be 9 games.

Yes.  This is the first time we've tried it this way in ROOT, so I'm seeing how it will go.

My hope is that the free connection with opponents (by not assigning opponents) will work better for people's schedules.  If it doesn't work well this month, then we can go back to assigning opponents in September.

Only the two of you have mentioned being okay with using that site, so I will enter the scores manually until everyone responds.

You can use this thread to do that.  Thanks guys for announcing the game and confirming the score.

P.S. Reading your message again, Reth, it would be helpful for you to start a "Redemption ROOT August."  That way we can see who signs up for it.  :-)

Post by: soul seeker on August 28, 2014, 04:58:52 PM
Well I'm in a bit of a quandry. Only 5 people participated in ROOT this month and only 2 had more than one game.
The top 4 were going to run a single elimination style tournament. Here is how the rankings would look.

1. RTSManiac: 2 -0  10 LS
2. Reth:  1-0             1 LS
3. birukfm:  1-2       -5 LS
4. Red:   0-1            -1 LS

So the first round of matchups are:
1 vs. 4:  RTSManiac vs. Red
2 vs. 3:  Reth vs. birukfm

That actually leaves our seeding the same.  So we can proceed with the Top Cut as is.  Had Jay won, then it would be a different story.

That's the game we played for this finals. I actually won the other one but seeing as this has already happened it's not worth rewinding for.

Hi Guys,

and sorry. But as I mentioned on the request for ROOT participation: I was only able to take part until 24th of August 2014. We've been on vacation and just returned. Also the next days I will only be available spontaneously - hopefully we can meet for some matches.

Unfortunately I still suffer from the latest plugin problems within Lackey (deck format changed) so that I can not yet use my decks within Lackey (maybe I will make use of the offer made by EmJayBee to convert my decks (before leaving for vacation I started trying myself but did not yet manage to load the xml-structure into a spreadsheet table).

Again sorry for not having better news!

Another question inbetween:

How did you all handle the problem with latest LackeyCCG plugin for Redemption? Since the structure of the deck-XML changed it cannot handle decks with the previous formats. Did you all revert to the previous but last version of the plugin or did you adjust all your decks manually?

I downloaded the RTS program and the wine thing so I could run it on my mac.  Now, I'm under the impression that I need to download something else or update or something.

I am wanting to play in the ROOT events, but am having trouble with all the tech stuff.  Any help and direction would be extremely helpful.

Hey Farmer_Maggot,

You may want to use LackeyCCG and the LackeyCCG Redemption plugin instead of RTS. It runs natively on Mac (so you can avoid WINE), has its own firewall punch through (so you can avoid Hamachi), and has the the latest cards in it. The information about LackeyCCG etc, can be found in this message. (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/rtsonline-play/lackeyccg-plugin-beta/msg523362/#msg523362)

Cheers.

Hi again and sorry again guys,

I was still struggling with my deck conversion for Lackey (I felt personally challanged to refresh some of my previous skills to do the conversion as automatically as possible since I created quite a few decks yet [not only for playing but also for my own cardpool] - it took me some nights but last night I hopefully had the "breakthrough" and now I can easily convert decks using some tools [only one problem left: All cards which got a new reprint within the EC-set cannot be considered and need a manual reworking]).

Last night I replied to Biruk regarding possible times for some matches.

But please just feel free to proceed not considering me - I do not want to hinder anything. I anyway plan to join as many upcoming ROOTs as possible - it is really fun!

So again many thanks for setting up these tournaments to all involved and again big sorry for slowing this ROOT down!

Bye

Hi Farmer_Maggot,

the Thread related to the LackeyCCG plugin is related here (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/rtsonline-play/lackeyccg-plugin-beta/).
According to my understanding latest full plugin should be available from here (http://www.dropbox.com/sh/dqk9n95kpleizw7/AAA5iwAihZEGsu4M2yaCXIWka).

The good place to post LackeyCCG specific stuff is on the Redemption(r) Online Gaming Portals forums http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/rtsonline-play/ (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/rtsonline-play/).
I try to visit there at least a couple of times a week (as opposed to most other boards where I only find things if they are listed in the recent postings on the front page).

Championship round for Aug/Sept ROOT:  RTSManiac vs. birukfm
Congrats to both!

birukfm & RTSManiac, would both of you be willing to allow spectators to your game? You can set up Lackey to allow it, and it could be fun.

My question, which may have an answer on the online boards, was in regards to Lackey CCG and playing Redemption on my iPad - which apple has provided an app. I image you would know the answer to this question.

Appreciate your time. I'll scour the online boards.
As Reth had answered your specific question about where to find the full download (Answer: here (http://www.dropbox.com/sh/dqk9n95kpleizw7/AAA5iwAihZEGsu4M2yaCXIWka), get the Full-1.2.1.zip) my original response was not aimed at you specifically. I was just using your post as a springboard to let folks know the best place to post Lackey-related questions.

Congrats to both for making it to the final round.  I'm especially proud of Biruk, from our Oakdale connection, making it there to face the always tough Clift.  Should be a really fun match.

Thanks Mr. Underwood

I am fine to play with spectators. I will be waiting on a time when Clift wants to play. and we are arranging the time and date.
