In recent weeks, during friendly chit-chat, before, during, and after games, I've had alot of the newer-ish players (not naming any names) complain that they can "never win" I'd like to take a moment to dispell this notion.
1. Everyone can win, Everyone can lose, Redemption is 80 deck building, 15 percent skill and 5 percent luck. If you're having troubles don't start in on your play, take a look at your deck, perhaps it doesn't match up well against alot of the decks you're seeing. Don't be afraid to post your deck over in the help board, that's what it is there for.
2. Don't measure your success by how you do during ROOT/Online games. I took a quick look at the ROOT list, then compared it to what I know about the individuals. of the 16 players this month, 8 have placed at regionals or nationals, 3 have won nationals, two have won more than once. This is actually down from recent months when we've had as many as 10 so called top players. These are not your everyday players, the majority of the people you play in ROOT are literally the best of the best, don't be discouraged when you lose a few. I haven't beaten Gabe in 4 months, but I'm cool with that. Because I beat him once and taught him a lesson about access :) Which leads to my next point:
3. Redemption is always a learning experience, win or lose. I learn something new in just about every game I play, I know that alot of the other guys feel that way too, so don't get discouraged, learn, ask for help, beat us the next time.
Thanks,
RDT (The other N00b with a medal)

Also remember: In every Redemption game, somebody has to lose. If you are the one that lost, then you are providing encouragement to the one who has won. So even if you lose every game you play, remember that you are contributing an important service to your Redemption society. :)

didnt prof alstad win a nats too?
-
I thought he placed second in 04. Justin has won, I didn't think Jordan had. forgive me if I'm wrong mate.

I never won; I got second in T2-MP and third in T1-2P at '04 Nats. Jonathan has also gotten a second place ('05 T1-2P) but Justin remains the only Alstad to have won it.
-
i'm only 12 and i used to lose like crazy but now i'v gotten top 4 here in root so it proves that with pratice and advice anyone can win. BTW ROOT has some of the frindlest players in the country in it so you can improve esaliy(look at showfarblower used to be not that good then started top 8ing ROOT every month)

I got a second at NE Regional last year, in T1-mulitplayer, idk if you were counting multi action into your tally. ;D
-
I was, I don't know you all that well so I was unaware of your placement, you've been added :)
-
do state places count?
-
I didn't include them, I personally consider Regional wins to be more of an acomplishment than state, as state tourneys can have lower turnouts (Yeah Tim, I'm looking at you and your 3 person Nebraska st)
-
well i only went to a state
(got 2nd)

i wonder if we have pics from that...?

Thanks! It was my first regional and only second year of competitive play.

I got second at Regionals two years ago in T-1 2-P, so I'm at least decent at Redemption, and even with that, I consider it an accomplishment to be in the top 8 of ROOT. ROOT's competition is probably harder than any other single tournament. Yes, I honestly believe ROOT is harder than Nationals to succeed at.
-
Hmmm... Tim should update his records, I missed you also, updated. That's now half of the ROOT players that placed at regionals or better.
-
Which is why it's the single hardest competition in the country. The skill per player is exponentially higher than any other tournament.
-
<--- Has never placed in a tournament above district.
(Although I'm not in ROOT anymore :o)

I love those encouraging remarks you get in games both online and in person sometimes...like this I got from Sir Nobody once...
"Your deck is extremely frustrating" ......."Did you know that?"
Those perk my day right up!

That was uncalled for! I can't help it if there are only two players that aren't afraid to compete against me on my home turf. :P I even tried to entice people by offering free tattoos! You're welcome to come and dominate at the 4 person Nebraska state tournament this year if you'd like (assuming we host one, which we probably won't).

I've been to a few tournaments with harder competition. Iowa State comes to mind. Sealed Deck - 2 Player had 4 players: Kevin Shride, Gabe Isbell, Gil Kimmons, and Tim Maly. (That's 2.75 National titles per participant for those doing the math). The MN Type 2 local always has some very impressive competition. And while Nationals may have more "not very good" players, the list of really good players at nationals is still longer than the number of participants in ROOT.
That being said, ROOT is probably the stiffest competition you'll find at a Type 1 tournament not held during the summer.

This is what makes Nats the toughest tournament of the year. There are just soooo many awesome players that it is extremely difficult to finish at the top (or even to place).

I agree that ROOT is probably the premier T1 competition during the regular year, just as Wild Bill's tourney is the premier T2 competition during the year.

Hey,
No idea I was this loathed!!
It's nothing personal, I just feel it's my obligation to loathe everyone equally.

This seems to be the perfect place to show how bad I am at Redemption! Just so no one's surprised at Nationals.
