Title: February/March ROOT
Post by: Chronic Apathy on February 07, 2012, 11:05:27 PM
This is for the Feb/March ROOT tournament. If you're interested in joining, please post in this thread and you'll be added to the list.  We will be going until the end of March.

"No 1st turn RA's or Doms" is out:
This month we will not be experimenting with the proposed 'No 1st turn RAs or Dominants' rule. However, please share your experiences with the rule here (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/redemption-online-official-tournament/feedback-on-1st-turn-limits-%28used-in-jan-root%29/).

No rule experiments this month!
We're taking a month off of the rule changes to let any newcomers that might be joining due to LordZardeck's excellent Redemption Connect lobby get adjusted, as well as give the ROOT veterans a bit of a break. Rule experiments will continue after this tournament.

Matchups for week 7/7 (last):
adotson85 v. Alex Olijar
Minister Polarius v. Chronic Apathy

Both of you are added.  In the future, please sign-up ahead of time to make things more fair for everyone else who is randomly assigned opponents the 1st round (thanks random.org).  I don't mind new players joining late, but both of you are returning players.  We'll let it go this month, but everyone should consider this the general warning to all.

Why am I not on the list?
I apologize.  We had a simple glitch here where CA started this thread and updated the list as people signed up.  Then I modified the OP so that it would show the rankings and games.  I assumed that the list was up to date without reading through all the replies (my mistake).  Therefore the last few people who signed up were not included (Adotson, Alex, and Slug).

I will now re-randomize the new list and post the new games.  Sorry again for the confusion.

In that case, it's actually better to just not report the use of the plot.  Otherwise, I might get confused :)

After discussing things with Prof Underwood, we've agreed to implement a new rule from here on out. After the pairings and rankings of a week are announced, anyone who requests to join afterwards will have to wait until the next week to join. A possible exception will be made if someone drops out and a person offers to take their place.

We'll probably make exceptions for this too.  We just want to make sure that people don't set up their first round game by joining late.  It also makes it easier on us to manage if everyone signs up on time :)

Is there any way to auto-sign-up? Cause I'm never going to remember to sign up the first week, let alone even remember when the first week's sign-up is.

The first week sign up is usually during the last week of the previous month.

Unfortunately, if we did auto-sign-ups, then we would start the month with several people who do NOT plan on playing the next month, and then all of their 1st round opponents would get ghosted on.  We already have enough of an issue with people ghosting occasionally that I don't want to increase that negative experience.

However, SK is right that the new sign-up always shows up around the last week of the current tournament (in this case, that will be the last week of March).

Title: Re: February/March ROOT
Post by: Chronic Apathy on February 26, 2012, 03:46:14 PM
It's done randomly, not based on what the participants want. I have gotten paired with people I would prefer not to play with as well, but it's not my call, nor is it Underwood's. If you and NWJ don't get a game in, and he doesn't confirm the ghosting, I'm going to need you to screencap your PM.
Title: Re: February/March ROOT
Post by: Red on February 26, 2012, 03:49:23 PM
This will be the second month in a row I was paired with an opponet that makes no effort to contact me. Last month him not making any effort to play with me cost me a placing. I don't want it to happen again. I've been active. I shouldn't have to screencap a pm.
Title: Re: February/March ROOT
Post by: Chronic Apathy on February 26, 2012, 03:52:00 PM
Underwood and I will discuss this before the start of next month. In the meantime, my statement sticks - it's done randomly, not based on what participants want.

You could just auto-save your PMs like everyone else does instead of screen capping??
Title: Re: February/March ROOT
Post by: Chronic Apathy on February 26, 2012, 05:29:17 PM
Quite simply, I don't like trusting someone's word when it comes to ghosting. Anyone can just make up text and send it to me in the correct format, and I'm of the opinion that if someone can't take the 2-3 minutes necessary to save and upload a screencap, they don't need the points. I distinctly recall Red mentioning in the previous topic not to trust a person's word when they say they've been ghosted, and that's exactly what I'm doing. Now that said, I realize that things happen and sometimes people (especially younger members) can't screencap for whatever reason. If NWJonathan comes on and confirms the ghosting (or otherwise doesn't post here or PM Underwood or myself to defend himself), then Red doesn't need to screencap. If he denies the charges, however, then I need to see some screencaps. I meant to elaborate on that in my previous post, and for that, Red, I apologize. In regards to last month, I didn't receive a PM from you and you didn't post in the topic, so unless you PM'd Underwood about it (in which case, I trust his judgement completely), you can't blame your opponent for not attempting to make contact with you.

Screencapping (or Print Screening) allows you to save a snapshot of whatever your screen looks like at that moment to the clipboard. You can paste it in Paint or Photoshop or something and save it as a picture file.

Just my two cents obviously, but I don't think it's a good idea to change rules mid-tourney. A week is not nearly enough time to adjust, they will probably have their decks adjusted but the first time two players forget about no more FTM there will be issues. Do what you want, I just don't think it would be wise.

Yeah, that's the direction I think we'll end up leaning towards, but the big advantage of ROOT is that, even now, there's a week and a half before the end of next week, so people have plenty of time to build new decks to compensate. If they happen to forget the other rules, that's bound to happen even if we don't start until the April ROOT, and I've forgotten to test rules in various weeks, probably more than even the average participant. I don't feel that strongly either way about it.
Title: Re: February/March ROOT
Post by: Prof Underwood on March 16, 2012, 12:11:14 AM
I can see both sides on this one.  I feel strongly that we will finish THIS week using the old rules.  Then that only leaves 1 more week for this month (which means 1 game).  I don't think that it is likely to be worth it to make everyone switch their decks just for 1 game.

Also, we can use the sign up for the April ROOT as a good reminder to everyone of the new rule changes.  Hopefully by then we will also have a definite answer regarding whether Evil AND Good doms will be restricted from being played in the 1st round of a game (and possibly the ruling about duplicate characters that everyone is waiting on).
Title: Re: February/March ROOT
Post by: Chronic Apathy on March 16, 2012, 06:21:53 PM
If I'm not mistaken, we have two weeks left for this month not including the rest of this week. We said seven weeks, and we're on week five. Did you decide to change that? Regardless, do see a problem in letting people play by the new rules if they choose to, but if there's a disagree, default to the old rules for the rest of this month?
Title: Re: February/March ROOT
Post by: LordZardeck on March 16, 2012, 11:33:05 PM
Well, this is my last ROOT tourney because of the new rules. I would really hope you'd wait until the end of the current tourney to implement the new rules, but I'll finish one way or the other. I do need time to adjust my deck if you decide to implement them now.

You are not mistaken, there are indeed 2 weeks left.  This longer than normal tourney had me confused for a bit :)

I would be ok with letting people play by the new rules if both players agree to it.  However, I think the default should be to finish this tournament with the old rules.

I agree with this.

All members of ROOT can consider this official: Play by the new rules if you want, however, the default is the old rules, if there's any dispute.

Regardless, Mayhem has been errata'd officially, so there will be no FTM's regardless of whether the players use the new rules.

The Mayhem errata is, for all intents and purposes, considered "part of the new rules." If people choose to play without it (though this should be extremely well-established by both players before the draw), I'm going to allow that.
Title: Re: February/March ROOT
Post by: Minister Polarius on March 17, 2012, 02:25:59 PM
I don't think that's right. Mayhem has been errata'd, that's different than a new batch of rules. All it does is stop FTM, why would you be opposed to that?
Title: Re: February/March ROOT
Post by: Chronic Apathy on March 17, 2012, 02:31:22 PM
Mayhem's errata was originally a rule change, until the rule change was voted down by the community. I don't imagine that many people will choose to play without the errata, but for the next two weeks of ROOT, as per Underwood and I's decision in this thread, I'm going to allow people to play without it if they so choose. If Underwood or Rob himself posts in this thread and says the errata sticks for all games, then I'll consider myself overruled, but that's the decision I'm going with.
Title: Re: February/March ROOT

Can you play with the errata and w/o dom cap?

Yeah, that's fine. Feel free to pick and choose which rules you want to play with, just keep in mind that starting in April, all rule changes go into effect for all the games.
Title: Re: February/March ROOT
Post by: Prof Underwood on March 17, 2012, 02:58:55 PM
I understand where Pol is coming from about the Mayhem errata.  However, I'll support Chronic's call on for the remainder of this tournament.  Since we're in the middle of a tournament, I don't feel right in forcing people to change decks in the middle of things.

At the same time, I think just about everybody hates FTM, therefore I suspect that most games both players will agree to go with the new errata :)

Oh. I don't see what the big problem was. What makes the first turn so bad to use mayhem on than any other?

I'll pitch a scenario to you. The game starts and you drew one soul, while your opponent drew two, and he opts to go first. He then proceeds to put down all but three cards from his hand into play (a few heroes, an EC or two, maybe a couple artifacts), and then ends his turn, putting down Mayhem as soon as you draw. He now has an eight card lead on you, and in the first turn of the game, an eight card lead is the difference between winning or losing a good chunk of the time.
Title: Re: February/March ROOT
Post by: Minister Polarius on March 17, 2012, 03:54:58 PM
FTM can be as much as an 11 card advantage. Besides which, instead of starting the game out with 11 cards to work with, you have only 6, meaning you not only have an card disadvantage, but a setup disadvantage as well. I have won a few games where I got FTM'd, but they're the exception. The winner of last year's nationals got 6 FTMs and none against him.

Perhaps you're confusing this ROOT with the Jan/Feb ROOT?  I don't have any record of you guys playing each other, so I really hope you didn't (otherwise I've got bigger problems) :)

We played towards the end of last month, not this month. I sent you a PM.

I just won an EXTREMELY close game against tse, 5-4. I was on the edge of my chair with that game.

Confirm, I honestly don't think it could have been any closer than it was. Zardeck used a plot.

Final Rankings
are posted.

Congratulations to our winners (Alex Olijar, Chronic, and Polarius).  It was super close at the top with 5 people sharing the lead for victory points and a circle of victory at the top (#1 beat #2, #2 beat #3, and #3 beat #1) so we had to go by differential.

An honorable mention goes to Adotson, who had the hardest schedule of the ROOT.  He ended up going 4-2 against the top 8 players and added in a win against NWJ on top of that.  It was a month to be proud of.

I like that my plots are less urgent than TSE's.

I'm not sure what happened... My opponent stopped responding during our round today and I couldnt make contact w/ him afterwards... I'm not sure how to put that. We both had 2 LS's.

Since it won't change anything in the top 3, and since this wasn't reported until after midnight PST, I think we'll just leave this be rather than re-figuring stuff.  But hopefully you'll be able to get your connection working for your next game :)

I'm fairly confident it's a one time issue.  I'm guessing either comcast decided to perform maintenance on their network (not an unknown occurrence here, but usually we get a notification of that) or there was some kind of accident that shut things down.
