Anyone interested in the idea of testing 10 card opening hands?
Meaning drawing 10 instead of 8 first round?
-
I'd like to try 10-card opening hands.

What about 10 card opening hands and no New Jerusalem or Falling Away?

Well this got interesting. I'm down with that. And no Lost Souls card? haha

In the past root has adopted one variation a month. What if we do the 10 card opening hand this month and the try no Fa no NJ no lost souls card next month?
TBH I have been wanting to try the 10 card opening hand for awhile, if Drrek is ok with and we try it without the additional modification I would love to hear some feed back (good or bad) from people who play ROOT this month.
Just to give some background here is a link to the thread when I first proposed the idea of a 10 card opening hand. http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/game-play-variations/what-if-we-drew-10-in-the-opening-hand/ (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/game-play-variations/what-if-we-drew-10-in-the-opening-hand/)

Yeah, I know that's kinda been the standard, but my thinking was that an opening 10 card hand would really seem to promote speed decks (since you're getting nearly a quarter of your deck in your opening hand assuming a 50 card deck w/ Hopper). However, not having New Jerusalem and Falling Away to rely on would perhaps promote more balanced decks as well as more variety in dominant selection.

The Meta is balanced moving it towards faster games is part of the point. It's why I want to see it tested and to get feed back from players. An opening 10 draw also gives faster access to speed counters making them more viable.

I remember games from 4+ years ago when Pol, I, and others tested "Type Ban" decks. Based on those, plus my regular T1 experiences, it's my opinion that T1 games can only be improved by removing NJ and the Liner LS. Getting to 5 without NJ is tougher, so I would definitely approve the FA removal to counter this.
It doesn't matter to me whether these bans are incorporated into the 10-card starting hand rule. Since Josiah suggested the 10-card idea, I say we only do that rule change this go-around.

One thing to keep in mind is that balanced decks will be more likely to draw a successful block. Starting with 10 instead of 8 is like giving an extra turn to each player in which they can't attack. Speed decks need to attack each turn and build a huge card advantage; the more cards their opponent starts with, the worse off they are. So I actually think this would be a bigger benefit for a balanced deck.

Hey interesting discussion! Will be interesting to find out how decks develop with drawing 10 at the beginning!
Unfortunately the last month I lost somewhat interest in playing but feels as it may return a little.
But ROOT would be too challanging due to the huge time difference (CET here)! :(

I'm open to any alternate rule testing
-
I'm overruled but I'm not up for rule testing, considering I'm most likely not playing another ROOT after this one.
-
I'll join.

The first week will start on the 24th, currently we have an uneven number of players. So far it seems most are in favor of trying 10 card opening hands. Anyone who has not weighed in on this, feel free to do so.

I have no preference either way. If we do end up with a bye, feel free to give it to me, it has been awhile since I've played any T1 so extra time to get my deck ready might be nice.
