Title: April/May ROOT
Post by: Prof Underwood on March 29, 2012, 10:42:25 AM
This is for the April/May ROOT tournament. If you're interested in joining, please post in this thread and you'll be added to the list.  We will be going for 6 weeks (until mid-May).

No rule experiments this month!
We're taking a month off of the rule changes to let players adjust to the new ruling changes that have already been announced (ie. Mayhem errata, Dom limit = LSs in deck, and ONLY rescuing opp LSs). Rule experiments will continue after this tournament.

I'll try the April/May ROOT.  Hopefully I can get some games in.  I work 3p-11:30p Eastern Time.  So, my games would have to be in the morning or before I go to work.  Let me know if this works or presents a problem.  If it doesn't then I'm in!!

I could play late enough that you would be home from work.  But it is possible that some people might not be able to work around your schedule.  Of course you could also aim for games on the weekends when you're not working.  I'm guessing that you'll be able to find times to play.

Thanks for letting us know ahead of time so we can make sure to not schedule you a game that week.  Probably remind me the week before in case I forget.  You won't get a bye (ie. 4/3 pts), but you also won't get a ghost (ie. 0/-5 pts).

Each week, you get matched up with a person, who you play, then report your scores in this thread. It's as easy as it sounds. :)

I'll be playing this week, and I apologize for not making this thread like I said I would - I got caught up with school.

Hey Prof would it help if i send you my weekly schedule?  I usually work 5 days a week and every other weekend.  When I get my schedule for April I could send it to you if you like.  Not sure if that would help or not.  It's rough to play late at night only because my wife doesn't have a vehicle right now.  So, I take her to work every morning.  I'm sure I'll get to play some games in the tourney.  :)

Probably not.  Really it is only the player who your are matched up with for the week that needs to know your schedule.  People will try to work with you on finding a time to play :)

matt man, PM _JM_ to set up a game. He has a bye, so if you can't get a game together, he'll get points, and you'll be added next week. If you do play a game, then the results of it are official. Sound good?

P.S.  What if I build a deck with 3 Plots in it?  Still limited to 3 per tourney?

It's three games per tourney, not really three Plots. If you rip two in one game, it doesn't count.

The limit is actually in the games played, so yeah 3 games per tourney regardless of the number of plots used in a particular game.

What happens if you have multiple plots and over the course of a game play one normally and play one with Gallows up?

When a Plot gets ripped it's counted as a Plot ripped, however, any other Plots played (with Gallows or otherwise) during that game aren't counted for that player.

Humn, either you're misunderstanding the question or I'm misunderstanding the rules.

If a Plot gets played normally (and would be ripped in a normal game), that Plot needs to be reported. It doesn't matter if a different Plot was played with Haman's Gallows active.
Title: Re: April/May ROOT
Post by: Prof Underwood on April 09, 2012, 11:27:45 PM
I think I understand your question, because you are thinking that if you have a deck with multiple plots, and at least one of them survives the game due to Haman's Gallows, that you could use that again in a regular tournament.

However, I don't think that's going to happen very often, and I don't think that keeping track of it is worth the minimal chance of it happening.  So I think we should still just stick with the simple rule of only allowing plots to be ripped in 3 games during a ROOT.

+1

The last two months we've played, I believe I lost two out of my first four games (three games last month, if I'm not mistaken) and I still came back to get third in one and second in the other. Keep up the positive attitude, you still have every chance in the world to succeed.

Unless she gets on and says the reason you couldn't play was specifically your fault (which I highly doubt she'll do) nobody gets points either way.

This is definitely uncalled for.  And my defense never stopped your offense once, so how was that the reason your deck lost?  Unbased accusations have no place on these boards, or anytime, really.

So what do we do with RC down?  I've never gotten Hamachi to work so the only way I know how to play on here is through Redemption Connect.  I heard he's working on fixing it but it has been down a few days and might not be fixed before Sunday.

I'll keep an eye on this.  But I recommend trying again to figure out Hamachi.  Maybe have someone walk you through it.  I'll talk with Chris about it, but I can't promise that we'll extend the time.

If I were a betting man (which I am, so consider this a bet) I'd be money on RC! being down for at least a week so Hamachi is really the only way to get games in for this week.

Play by phone? If both players agree you can use alternate methods of play.

My inclination is to extend the deadline for another week, and either make this the last week or reduce next tournament's time by a week. It does seem unfair to knock people out simply because they can't play. Underwood and I will talk and come up with a solution.
Title: Re: April/May ROOT
Post by: lp670sv on May 05, 2012, 02:33:13 PM
There is absolutely no guarantee that RC! will be up by the end of next week. Unless Sean's host unblocks his database it could be weeks before it's back up, he has to migrate the entire site on to a different server and that is a very time consuming process that just will not be done quickly.

Do you have a better alternative? In my opinion, it's wrong for us not to at least attempt to let the problem work out, since a lot of people are really disadvantaged otherwise.

They could do direct connects but that requires a small amount of technical know how to accomplish. Playing over the phone as was already suggested or through an IM client such as skype, aim, or Gtalk.

That probably won't happen, but if the week is extended, there is a good chance we could play (since we'll probably both be at the same tournament next week).

A lot of that takes time to set up, and it's easier if people have an extra week to figure it out, considering there's only 36 hours left for people to get games in.

Oh no, I'm not; don't get me wrong, I haven't spoken with him at all since it went down, and I don't believe Underwood has either so we're having to make the decision based on what you've said, unless he gets on and has an update for us.

We will be having one last round after this one, the month is just being extended by a week. Thank you for understanding as we attempt to compensate for the technical difficulties.

He's actually reporting the result of his game with me (which I confirm).  We went ahead and played our game for the last week since RC is working again (meaning all remaining games should be able to play soon), and our game was already a for sure matchup, and the extended time into next week could've become an issue for my family.

It was a REALLY tough game, earning it's status as a championship match.  We both made 1 critical mistake (which kinda cancelled each other out), but other than that, play was really solid on both sides.  And I look forward to playing again sometime.

Yeah, probably.  It's a bit frustrating that we gave an extra week to get the last 4 games in, and it looks like none of them will happen anyway.  Next time, we'll be less likely to give extra time.

Ummm, not that I'm opposed to winning the tournament but I was sure that Prof U was going to end up ahead of me.  I can't see last weeks record but I thought he was 1 point ahead and we both won our games.  Additionally I thought that his record was 5 wins and 1 timeout loss.  My record was 5 wins and 1 loss.  Was there some mix-up or am I missing something?

Thats what I thought too when Mark had won his last game it looked like he could not be jumped at that point

Not that it changes the order of the final rankings, but for accuracy's sake, I believe Prof Underwood, Galadgawyn, and Red all have one extra point above.

Prof U - 5 wins, 1 timeout loss = 5*4 + 2 = 22
Galadgawyn - 5 wins, 1 loss = 5*4 + 1 = 21
Red - 4 wins, 1 timeout win, 1 loss = 4*4 + 3 + 1 = 20

Thanks for the math bro. I still think it's funny that the people I beat r1 and 2 are first and second.....(Congrats to them both btw)

Ah, I see. With Underwood's score, I just assumed I accidentally docked him a point so I added one, instead of going through and redoing the math. Turns out I just gave galadgawyn an extra point; probably a typo. Red's score must have been during one of Underwood's weeks, because I know that he had 17 points when I tallied up the scores. At any rate, I'm confident that the standings themselves are accurate, and I'll get around to fixing the archive thread later. Thank you to those of you who pointed out the mistakes, and to jmhartz for doing the math.
