Title: 2013 Jan/Feb ROOT
Post by: Prof Underwood on January 07, 2013, 11:24:29 PM
This will be the next ROOT tournament for the 2012-2013 Season. If you want to join, post here, and I will give you a matchup for next week.

Players have suggested many rule modifications in the past.  This month the rule modification is:
"Best 2 of 3 with Sideboard" - All decks follow T1 requirements with the exceptions that they may have "X" number of extra cards (X = equal to the number of LSs in the deck).  At the beginning of each game both players will take "X" number of cards (can't be LSs) out of their decks and put them in play (face down) in their territories.  Then shuffle all other cards back into their decks and redraw their opening hand of 8 cards.  The players will play 2 (or 3 if necessary) games against each other, and report scores for all games.

Similar to last month, all posts made by Monday night/early Tuesday morning will be counted as official, unless it is contradicted by an opponent.

Week 5 (Final) Matchups:
MKC vs. jmhartz
RTSmaniac vs. red
Westy vs. slugfencer
Prof Underwood vs. Isildur
jbeers285 vs. bye

Final Rankings:

I can also PM, text, call, fax, snail mail, Pony Express, rent a billboard, put up a Craigslist ad, send a clown, broadcast it on national television, Google bomb, send a homing pigeon, telegram, make a Powerpoint presentation, send a barbershop quartet, or use telepathy to relay that message to you as well. So, you know, there is absolutely no confusion at all.

Actually just the word "In" will do it.  However if you want to send a Barbershop Quartet, just make sure that they sound as good as these young ladies. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAvuFPha4AA&NR=1)  That high note at the end is just AWESOME!

I also have questions on side boarding. when do you get your sideboard cards and where do they go???

Thanks,

Could you ask that again differently?  I don't really understand your question.

when do you get your sideboard cards and where do they go???
They are mixed into your deck.  You take them out at the beginning of the game and set them face down in your territory.  You do not see them all game.  Then for the 2nd game and 3rd games, you can change which cards you want to set aside in your sideboard depending on what you learn from the first game.

Since it's best 2 outta 3, are we going to stick with the :45 min time limit?

Can we put extra doms in sideboard?

No, playing online is not as fast as playing in person, which is why games have the longer time limit in ROOT.  So the time limits for games are still the normal 2 hrs (unless both players agree to a different time limit prior to the game).

Can we put extra doms in sideboard?
For this month, you can put any card you want in your sideboard.  However, T1 deck building rules apply AFTER you decide which cards to put in your sideboard.  Therefore if you have a 56 card deck, then you are only allowed 7 LSs in the deck that you actually use.  If you switch in a dominant from your sideboard for your second game, then you need to switch out one of your dominants from the first game into your sideboard to make up for it.

So i expect to see some Destructions, maybe some Havest Times?

What would a decent sideboard consist of?

I would expect to see the average deck putting certain doms like the ones listed above, site access, specialty counters ect.

Fun thing about sideboards is you can really throw people off by having like seven sites in your sideboard and turning your seemingly harmless deck into a site lockout nightmare ;) But.... you get the point players can really do alot with 7-8 cards.

Post by: Master KChief on January 10, 2013, 03:45:29 PM
I also would like to mention it just might be even more beneficial now to go with 57 card decks, for both the extra dom and sideboard slot.

I will join if there ends up being an odd number of other people (as there are currently). I'm pretty busy, but I should have time for some games this month; however, I don't want to create a bye for anyone and then become too busy to play later on. I figure if there would be a bye anyway, then I might as well try to get games in.

FWIW, I do actually want to play, and I will do my best to get my games in, but I just want to be careful, as my schedule may be shifting considerably in the next few weeks.

We'll miss you.  Regrettably, this fits with the idea that the time commitment for a best of 3 series is prohibitive for some people.  I suspect that this would also be true of live tournaments.

Meanwhile, Alex_O and I played tonight.  I think the scores were 5-3, 1-5, 5-2 in my favor, but I'm sure Alex will clear it up if I'm off slightly on that.

They were interesting games, and Alex played great in all 3 of them.  We did kinda showcase the power of sideboards as he made adjustments in the 2nd game that helped him to win that one.  Then I made adjustments in the 3rd game that helped me to win that one.  It made for an interesting addition to the strategy of the game.

You had to have at least 3 in game 1; you played SoG/NJ, and you also used your "OP combo" to get one too.  And I didn't use Falling Away.  So 5-3?

I knew I was going to side in my Abe's Kid game 3 but was lucky enough not to see one. I was down to my last hero and had a plan FTW which worked. I wanted to scoop the whole game just to get to game 3. I will do it. I will be exhaused after this format is over but I will hate to see it go.

5-2, 5-3 against Red, my favor. Despite what the score looks like, both were very close and long grind games. Just like last week, I manage to steal a win in Game 2 because of a bottom decked SoG. I really don't like how SoG and NJ is such a decisive factor in T1 and can swing games dramatically from one side to the other just because they're absolutely unhindered free rescues. Ban NJ, or better yet ban both and make the game to 4. Grinding out rescues is far more enjoyable then flopping down the big 2. Had SoG and NJ not existed, Red surely would have at least won Game 2 with his great rescues.

I feel the need to correct that. We played one game, and due to time constraints (it was on Valentine's Day, the only day our schedules matched) limited each game to an hour. I won the first 3-0 and we were about half way done with the second game when my internet disconnected. Steve has graciously said he'd give me the points, but there should probably be an asterisk by that win.

Also, those games were some of the most fun I've ever had in Redemption. I thought two 154s would be bad, but it was actually loads of carnage and pretty strategic, from what I remember.

My games:

Game 1:  5-3 MKC
Game 2:  5-2 me
Game 3:  5-2 MKC

Fantastic games.  Saw some crazy things, but I can't share them for fear of spoiling decks.  MKC played amazing and deserved the victory.

Confirm. Saying the games were amazing doesn't do it justice...brutal grind games, incredibly well thought out moves, especially from hartz. One even resulted in me dropping SoG/NJ as my only rescues and going to scoop phase to start Game 3. Had I not had some early luck in Game 3 due to some massive drawing acceleration (;)) and allowed hartz to stabilize later on, then the outcome of Game 3 would have been very different. Much respect to hartz, his natural talent and ingenious thinking towards this format is simply incredible.

Final Rankings Posted.
It's been a while since we've had such a dominant win in ROOT.  MKC played and defeated the #2, #3, #4, and #5 players this month.  That is an impressive accomplishment and is worth noting.  Congrats to all, and we'll see you next ROOT (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/redemption-online-official-tournament/2013-febmar-root/) :)
