Title: How Soon is a soul Redeemed when the EC withdraws?
Post by: JohnDM on May 05, 2020, 01:15:46 AM
Heh- got my sons to play a little tournament with the Shelter-in-place situation.
I made their EC withdraw, then...
Got hit with a Christian Martyr.

I get that my hero was dead, BUT....was the lost soul redeemed BEFORE my Hero died?

No, opponent still has an opportunity to play a dominant before battle phase is resolved. In this case Christian martyr discards you’re hero (still in battle) before a Lost Soul is rescued

"A Dominant can be played at any time on the active players turn regardless of initiative provided no effects are resolving."

Maybe I'm reading the Reg wrong, but it seems like the withdraw effect has to resolve before the Christian Martyr can affect the hero. So I would say the hero would rescue the lost soul and then be discarded.

This isn’t accurate. The battle phase isn’t over when the withdraw affect completes. The defender still has an opportunity to do other things, such as add a blocker to battle (through a special ability), or play a dominant, like CM.  Conversely, if the blocker is losing by the numbers, and the defender chooses to discard his blocker as a result, then by doing so the defender initiated battle resolution, which means no dominants can be played at this time by either player, and the soul would be rescued.   But if a blocker is being removed from battle by a special ability used by the attacker, then the defender still can do something else to keep the battle going. If he chooses not to or can’t and concedes the battle then the battle moves to battle resolution, no doms can be played and the soul would be rescued.

Thank you for the clarification!
We were playing a four-man mini tournament, I made my #4 son's blocker withdraw with the special ability on an enhancer, and then my #3 son hit me with Christian Martyr to keep me from getting the 5th soul.

So, looks like my son was in the right. :)
God bless,
John

Ok that makes sense. I was under the assumption that the players had no yet resolved the withdrawing effect, therefore not making the CM able to be played. But if the withdraw effect was resolved, then yeah, a CM would discard the hero and no LS would be exchanged.
