Title: Watchful servant decks: still any good
Post by: Neil Da BOMB J on July 09, 2011, 09:02:28 PM
I was planing on making a watchful servant deck, but I was told that the new tins are going to have a lot of anti-watchful servant cards.  Will it still be worth it. Will people bother to use these cards? Will I find ways to get around these cards? just trowing this out there.  :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\

Any of the new cards that negate ignore abilities will stop a WS cold.  Golgatha also hurts, but is rarely seen in T1 (where one would play WS.)

To counter Thad, it has been decided that there will be many cards that negate Hero special abilities.  Source?  See the first two articles posted on the new set.  Both Tower of Thebez and Iron Pan hard-counter Watchful Servant.  For a Watchful Servant deck to work, you will probably need to include a good fortress (like House at Bethany, which can hold and protect WS before you need him) to discard Iron Pan and a way to get around Tower of Thebez (play Evil Gold and include Spreading Mildew, or include Seven Wicked Spirits in your deck and exchange SWS into your opponent's territory).  And you will still need to worry about CoM, Destructive Sin, Haman's Gallows, and any other new counters to Thad that also counter WS.

One of my favorite cards from the new set will also present quite a problem for WS decks I would imagine, and in a much different way than either Tower of Thebez or Iron Pan. But that's only if the person using it knows what to do with it.

There are at least 5 cards in the new set, 3 of which will probably wildly popular, that will cause a nightmare for all Herolite decks.

Which is why it's this year or broke for WS.

I have yet to see something that will stop Watchful Servant in a way different than many other cards already do. I have counters for those, it'll work for the new stuff too. Watchful Servant can compete just fine with good construction.

I saw a pretty effective counter at PA state.  Nicely played, easy to stop, but unexpected.

If you're referring to the Provisions/DD play, that's not difficult to stop when you have more than 2 heroes and a Chariot of Fire.

I didn't realize he posted it on the boards.

Yeah, and a quick reading of the rules.  The deck he played against didn't, though.
