Starting a new playgroup

Hi Everyone,
I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but I'm looking to start a local playgroup near me (there are a couple fairly large churches in the area), and was wondering how others attempted this, and also how they fared with the prospect.

Was there resistance?  Did they bring an assortment of cards?  did they demonstrate a game for the pastors/youth leaders?

any help would be appreciated.

thanks and God bless you,
Michael

Our group started when an other playgroup from a college about 1 hr away demonstrated the game to the males of our youth group (after the actual youth group meeting.  And it just happened that only the guys were interested for us.)
They basically had a deck made up for each prospective player and we had several games going, mostly one on one (newcomer vs. experienced player).  There were even unlimited booster packs given liberally (because to a newcomer, a free pack is a free pack).
Looking back, the group from the college did a great job.

It helped very much that one of the experience players was also a former youth group member and he basically "planted" the group here- overseeing all questions, rulings, and even the card supply for at least 6-9 months.  You will need to find someone to take a similar role who can teach basic strategy and deck building as well as promote the game itself.

I don't know how well you know the folks in the churches you mentioned, but I don't know how successful a cold call would be received.  I would start with one or two people that you know in each church and see if you can make inroads that way- through some kind of relationship.

First, do you have any people that play besides yourself?  Second if not, start out small and teach a handful of players close to you how to play and teach them well enough that they can teach others.  After that you can expand.  If you already have some people in place then I would maybe go to some churches and ask if you could present Redemption to the older children and youth.  You could even go into local christian stores, or even talk to a game store that might host other card games and see if you could get a game night/day for Redemption.  Most importantly don't get too frustrated or give up!  I tired to start a group at my church and really never had a whole lot of interest for the first 2 years, but now I'm teaching over 10 people every week.  Also, if you need some cards to help you get started I've started up a system that can help you out! http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/redemption-market/storehouse-reborn-(i-want-your-thoughts)/

Mike-Do you have a place for your group? If you're staying local, we might be willing to be a part.

Are you coming to NJ States? We could talk about it then.
