Title: Redemption with Jayden
Post by: TheJaylor on July 09, 2020, 09:39:31 PM
Hey everyone,

I started a YouTube channel called Redemption with Jayden (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvTjfjRJU_gP850G7MkpiPA?view_as=subscriber) where I'm hoping to post recorded games and will probably also do stuff like box openings, deck building/tips, and other Redemption-related content. Check it out and let me know what kind of stuff you guys would like to see. I just posted my first video which was of a game I played with CtheTree. It's a bit long but that's mostly just because it was a really great game. I'm still working on figuring out best practices for video editing for gameplay stuff, but I kinda just wanted to get things rolling with this one so expect the videos to get better as time goes on. I'm certainly open to constructive criticism/suggestions from those of you with more experience.

Thanks!

Jayden

Started watching the first video and am really enjoying it! I don't mind the length at all - it's been so long since I've been able to play that it's like a refresher course. On that note I like how you give commentary as you play, such as on cards, strategies, etc. - very helpful and makes the game more fun to follow along when we know your mindset while playing.

Thanks for doing this!

Awesome, glad you guys like it. I might switch it up sometimes and have the other person talking as well, such as when I'm using a deck I've played with and talked over before and maybe those ones will be a little quicker, but I'm glad you don't mind the length. I suppose with YouTube you can always play it at 1.5 speed and such too.

Ha, oops. I guess I accidentally left that part at double speed. I'll just blame the low quality video editing software, time to try out a different program I guess. :P

Took my Throne deck out for another spin against Josiah Beers and had him on voice as well to try something a little different. The audio is a little unbalanced so I'll have to work on that for next time, but otherwise let me know what you think and if you like this format. I don't think I would switch to it exclusively since it's easier to talk about the deck while playing, but it could be fun once in awhile, especially with players like Josiah who have been around for awhile and know the meta pretty well.

Anyway, check it out here (https://youtu.be/o_FSeqlIox0).

I made some changes to my Prophets/Babylonians deck and took it out to play against CtheTree. Check out the video here (https://youtu.be/NGMr6ej-0vM) and let me know what you think of the changes.

Also, get hyped for next week as I hope to get some live and recorded Nats coverage. Should be lots of fun!

If you haven't seen it already, check out Josiah's game-breaking combo that he shared yesterday here (https://www.cactusforums.com/off-topic/a-letter-to-the-community-from-josiah-beers/msg603053/?topicseen#new) and then come watch this video (https://youtu.be/V4BqH1eMDXU) where RDT and I break down the Type 2 version of the first turn win combo.

For some reason the audio is a little weird in the beginning, but it gets better so don't worry.

After a short post-Nats break, Redemption with Jayden is back with a Nats recap and overview (https://youtu.be/PcTawoY3fDM) of the T2-2P deck I used. Hopefully I can get a Type 2 game up on the channel at some point, but for now check out this deck overview and go build a T2 deck!

It's a day late, but only because it was a great long game that took longer than I thought it would to edit. So head on over here (https://youtu.be/uM9S2fS2Syw) to check out the game I played with CtheTree to see a new Contender Deck that will soon be available for purchase from YourTurnGames.

The video does beat my record as the longest one yet, but buckle in cuz I just might break the record again next week in case that gives you a hint of what to look forward to. 8)

It's been a bit of a busy week, so this week's video is out a little late, but it's still a good one. I decided to try out MasterQ's "Musical HAG" deck against BradG. Unfortunately a weird Lackey glitch ended the game a little early, but it's still some good gameplay and I figured it shouldn't go to waste, so check it out here (https://youtu.be/y8UPcV-dW2Q)!

How would you rate that deck? Think it’s competitive against the new throne variant and other top decks in the competitive scene right now?

Hm, that's tough considering there really wasn't much Music Leader or even white in general played at Nats as far as I know. TheGuardian played a white/brown deck without ML and did fairly well, although that could have more to do with the player than the relative strength of the deck...

All that said, I don't think it's quite up there with Throne, but in the right hands in could probably win 25-50% of the games against it. I say, "in the right hands" because it's definitely a higher skill cap deck than Throne, as in it's harder to play. I played it for the first time in the video and made plenty of mistakes, whereas with Throne it's a little more obvious what choices to make. Someone like Josh, who's been playing ML for years, would certainly be closer to the 50% side.

Got a game in with Jay Chambers this week using the T1-2P winning deck at Nationals this year. Definitely a great game to check out here (https://youtu.be/l759Kp3FkE4) if you haven't been able to see the Throne deck that beat out the rest.

This week's video is a tutorial video, which is probably overdue for a Redemption YouTube channel that plays a game in most of the videos. So far my videos have been mostly geared towards people who already know how to play and want to see different deck builds and games, but I figured it'd be good to have more of an "Intro to Redemption" video as well to share with people who are new to the game and want to check it out.

So, for anyone who is relatively new, I hope the video is helpful for you, and for all the experienced players out there, you can skip watching this one BUT only if you share the video with someone else who's newer or who you want to introduce to the game.  ;) You could also just watch it too though so you know what the person you recommend it too will learn, but the intro is pretty short and then it's just a walkthrough of an I/J deck game.

In the near future I'm hoping to release a "Part 2" that uses the card types that the starter decks don't have and a few more complex abilities (probably using YTG Contenders), but in the meantime, here's the tutorial (https://youtu.be/KLfqmLp1jQA)!

Ha, glad to hear it! That's sorta the same feedback I was getting from a few friends of mine who play other games so they wanted to check it out but didn't get far cuz it takes awhile to get used to the cards and all the interactions, which is why I figured a tutorial video would be good.

That was well done. I was able to follow along and understood everything. I’ve read the 4th ed rules, and gone to the REG a few times to answer questions as I play. (To give you an idea of where I’m at in understanding the game) I’ve played out a couple games with the I/J decks and I think I am getting the hang of it. Seeing them play out definitely helped. The way abilities in this game work are quite different from what I’m used to, so it’s almost like learning a new language. I’m looking forward to the next video because I still am not very clear on how other things like sites and artifacts work, and there is not much about them in the 4th ed rules, and the REG entry leaves me wondering if I’m missing something somewhere 😂

Thanks again! If you ever have any questions about YouTube, I work with it daily on a pretty large channel so I probably have a reasonable answer

I did end up watching most of this, and though it was very clear to me you were unfamiliar with how things clicked initially, you had a far better grasp by the end of the game. That said, I think many people can testify that I'm a terrible person to have watch over your shoulder if you want to play the game your own way; I tend to want to play rather than watch. ::) But it's always interesting to see how someone else plays your deck. Especially if you've never played it yourself. :P

I would for sure make changes to that deck now. But I do think it's a solid first draft.

Keep playing, my man! 8)

Haha, yeah, I definitely should've played a practice game with it ahead of time or at least done some test draws, but it was sort of a spur of the moment thing where I didn't know what deck to play and had wanted to try yours out. I don't think I quite did it justice, but fortunately the deck is quite forgiving. :P Hopefully we can get some tournaments going again up here soon and do some drafting.  :D

As promised, the Part 2 tutorial is now uploaded here (https://youtu.be/FxlZpFst-n0) so go ahead and check that out. I was hoping to get it posted earlier today but it literally took 12 hours to upload to YouTube for some reason, so here we are. For some reason there are a few extra seconds at the beginning of the video, so just consider that some "behind the scenes" footage or blame my lousy editor. ::)

That was great! One question that never came up in the game:

With the site that can hold enhancements (forget the name atm)
When you put an enhancement in the site, would it go in face up or face down?

I assume you mean Musician's Chambers, which is actually a Fortress. Enhancements it holds are placed face up. The only time you play a card face down is if another card says so specifically, or you're putting down an Artifact.

For this week's video, I tried out something new that I've seen some YouTubers/streamers do for other games and thought could be worth a shot. Instead of playing a game, I go in-depth into a decklist sent to me by demonhunter85 and give some feedback and suggestions. The goal is to give a detailed thought process behind different choices for cards in the deck and what I personally think would fit best, which isn't always the absolute best of course, but hopefully it's helpful for the deck builder and also for anyone interested in using a similar theme. The deck for this video in particular is a Flood/Animals deck (hurray thematic points) and I definitely enjoyed testing it out and finding a few things I would do differently. So check out RWJ's very first Deck Check (https://youtu.be/JydMOtFBHyA).

Like I said, I enjoyed doing it, and it works well since I haven't been able to devote as much time to building fresh decks lately, but the goal of the channel is to promote the game and create enjoyable content for you guys, so please do let me know if you like this type of video, or if you'd rather just see gameplay, or if there's something else you'd like to see more of. I'm guessing if non-gameplay videos like this were shorter then that might be easier to enjoy, so let me know if you like the length as well or if going a little faster/less in-depth would be better. If you do like this though, feel free to send me a decklist (here or Discord) and hopefully I'll be able to get to it.

Brand new, female theme Contender Deck is now available and this week's video shows ya how to use it (or at least a way to use it... I could probably use a little practice with it still), but either way, it was a really fun game against Derek Tirado's blue/pale green Contender Deck so check it out here (https://youtu.be/oPkUDuwKHKc)!

This week we got a neat lil combo deck that was fun to build and exciting to play, especially since there haven't been a whole lot of combos lately that didn't get nerfed right away because they were silly and broken. Many thanks to BradG for getting the game in with me. I didn't warn him at all ahead of time about the deck since it works best with the element of surprise, so check out the video here (https://youtu.be/gVH4fp88OXk) to see if I was able to pull it off!

You may have noticed that yesterday was Thursday and no video came out. If you didn't notice, I guess that's okay. My feelings aren't too hurt. BUT, never fear. There will be a video coming out this week, likely tomorrow (Saturday) evening. I decided to push it back a couple days because I was busy and I wanted to give y'all the best quality content.

Just so you know what to get ready for, this week's video will feature a brand new Red/Black Brigade Contender Deck. I ended up playing TWO games against jhendrix6426 because the first one wasn't a great intro to the Contender Deck, but I wanted to show it anyway, so y'all actually get to see TWO games in one video, which is why it'll be super long.

Also, my apologies for not being able to get the third game from the Online Tournament available for you guys yet. There were a few issues with the video that I'm not sure at this point if I'll be able to resolve, so hang tight and hopefully I can get that out for ya, but if not, well, there will be more online tournaments so it'll be fine.

Hey everyone, exciting news! To kick off my channel in the new year, I'm going to do a LIVE Booster Draft with Bobbert, RedDragonThorn, and TheGuardian this coming Thursday evening at 7PM CST. It should be available afterwards in some form in case you can't make it for the livestream, but it would be great to see how many we can get on Thursday! I'll be sure to provide a link in the Discord on Thursday for y'all in case you're not subscribed to my channel for some reason.  ;)
