Title: Redemption Nuts and Bolts - In Game Resources!
Post by: Krenko on November 10, 2020, 02:13:20 PM
Hey all, as I have been learning the game and getting more involved, I have been trying to apply nut and bolt concepts to help deepen my understanding of Redemption. First on my mind is resources!

It's pretty clear as a card game, that Redemption's primary resource is cards.

I think another major resource is turns, or more specifically, rescue attempts. Winning rescue attempts is how you win the game, Losing a rescue attempt is bad, but you might be able to get some amount of value out of it depending on how you play it out. Skipping a rescue attempt is just bad.

Beyond those two things, I'm sure there are more resources, but I haven't identifed them. That's why I am starting this thread; to get a good discussion on the topic, and answer the question:

What are the in game resources of Redemption?

I think those are the two major resources - this game doesn't have an energy or mana system, and there isn't a cost to playing cards. That said, there are a few other resources.

One is available Lost Souls. If there are no souls in an opponent's Land of Bondage, then your turns are less valuable because you can't actually make a rescue attempt. This is an odd one because at face value this is something your opponent has more control over than you do, but it can be impacted by capture (https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/redemptiondb/RedemptionDB_Images_Watermarked/4710b518-76be-4c15-a0fa-529728528808_The_Amalekites_Slave_LR.jpg) mechanics (https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/redemptiondb/RedemptionDB_Images_Watermarked/de3a2beb-0d66-4c62-b67c-cec087071fd2_The_Babylonian_Merchants_PoC1.jpg), soul (https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/redemptiondb/RedemptionDB_Images_Watermarked/2f572236-e72b-44c5-a4f4-94ec1e22b506_Lost_Soul_II_Chronicles_28_13_LR.jpg) generators (https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/redemptiondb/RedemptionDB_Images_Watermarked/9a44a751-1e2c-42e1-a4be-eb85d64c4760_Majestic_Heavens_PROMO.jpg), or soul (https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/redemptiondb/RedemptionDB_Images_Watermarked/09f0fb5c-7121-4df7-9261-e09249a0f626_Burial_DECKG.jpg) removal (https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/redemptiondb/RedemptionDB_Images_Watermarked/01290421-11a1-4e69-b871-7d03877f41d2_Sheol_PoC2.jpg).

Another resource is artifact slots. Normally players get one each - their artifact pile - but some (https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/redemptiondb/RedemptionDB_Images_Watermarked/a24a7de1-812b-4c74-b7bb-6ef4ba0b15b5_The_Tabernacle_PROMO.jpg) cards (https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/redemptiondb/RedemptionDB_Images_Watermarked/be83b4c2-726b-40b8-998a-3dfa712448da_Assyrian_Laborers_PoC1.jpg) can (https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/redemptiondb/RedemptionDB_Images_Watermarked/c6381dcc-e316-4a05-abc5-1479cb09f5ad_Noahs_Ark_(Ark_of_Salvation)_PoC1.jpg) create (https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/redemptiondb/RedemptionDB_Images_Watermarked/7ee1a600-7ebf-4cd4-972f-6427b9c4b77d_Corrupted_Temple_FOM.jpg) more (https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/redemptiondb/RedemptionDB_Images_Watermarked/4317344b-8c55-4735-b6f5-6971027e34ae_Book_of_the_Covenant_PoC1.jpg), and some (https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/redemptiondb/RedemptionDB_Images_Watermarked/0b875b7c-e74b-4bd8-80ba-c497298c756c_Magic_Charms_TEXP.jpg) artifacts (https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/redemptiondb/RedemptionDB_Images_Watermarked/6be0b2a3-9951-4fa1-b6d4-31fe8bb453c2_Matthew’s_Begats_LoC.jpg) can (https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/redemptiondb/RedemptionDB_Images_Watermarked/7576ac24-16e5-4c5d-9ccd-a2c89aa917ab_Magicians_Staves_FOM.jpg) be (https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/redemptiondb/RedemptionDB_Images_Watermarked/59bd5adc-0b4b-417c-9157-5ec62099bfc6_Kings_Signet_Ring_LoC.jpg) activated (https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/redemptiondb/RedemptionDB_Images_Watermarked/b41e1c94-d69b-4d91-bd3d-cdbb5e938248_Iron_Pan_FOOF11.jpg) elsewhere (https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/redemptiondb/RedemptionDB_Images_Watermarked/a44874f3-3507-4524-9be7-1cc6e700dcda_Wool_Fleece_COW.jpg). Having two or three artifacts active instead of one can be very powerful.

While they're more of a metagame thing, there are deckbuilding resources as well. The number of Lost Souls in your deck determines not only its size - the number of cards you can include - but also the number of dominants you can run. This may seem less important, but the number of cards in your deck (even ones in the same soul range) is hugely important, and there are a lot of very solid dominants that just aren't run in T1 because you only have room for seven.

Ah good answer, especially in regards to Lost Souls! I did lump them in with cards, but the more I think of it, they should be their own category, as they straddle the line of a card resource, and a turn resource. And in addition to that, they can be somewhat analogous to life total in other games, in the sense that you can afford to give away some, if that helps you set up for a win later on. On the other hand, as I understand it, soul differential is a thing in tournaments, so in that case, it might be a more costly resource in the long run!

How about initiative? Is that a resource, or something else ?

Hmm, maybe depending on how you define resources in TCGs in general and in Redemption especially. If it is a "cost" you need to pay to get a benefit (i.e. spending a card slot for getting the benefit of putting e.g. a battle winner in)? Then ini could be thought about it in some manner like: Including a small numbered guy without banding abilities to get hopefully initiative while being vulnerable to AotL or CM - or putting in a big numbered guy with a strong SA and/or maybe even banding while most probably giving away initiative then (well if you do not manage to win the battle by that big numbered guy's SA or by banding in sufficient other characters). - Just my thoughts though.

That's at least part of the reason I started this thread! Most other TCGs have some sort of limited currency you have available to spend each turn, Redemption has nothing like that. So my first goal in analyzing the game from a theoretical perspective, was to define what the resources actually are :D

For initiative, I am on the fence. It certainly is something that is gained and lost, much like tempo, but I am not sure if it's something you can spend, so I'm leaning towards it being more of a concept, or measure of the game state,  than a resource.

Indeed. Payment for ini is more or less "indirect" IMO - as I try to pointed out.  :)

Initiative is a game state that allows you to use resources (certain ones).

Cards, Time, and Information are what I would refer to as the primary Redemption resources based on my years of play and cross examining Redemption strategy with other games.
