Title: Original Redemption card images
Post by: JonathanW on August 19, 2017, 12:33:17 PM
So I'm been knocking around the idea of making a complete online card database for Redemption for a few days and I noticed that every card image I've come across has been scanned.

Are the original card images available to the community for projects that would benefit from having them?

If there's the issue of them being used for nefarious purposes they can always be scaled down enough that they can't be used for printing/replicating/etc...

I just think it would be really nice if we didn't have to deal with all the blurriness and inconsistencies in scanned cards (especially those awful TeXP images, ewww)...

Thanks!

Most of the card images for the newest sets are at Land of Redemption (http://landofredemption.com/?page_id=2741). As for older sets I doubt Gabe has access to those files (if they even still exist).

An online searchable image database would be awesome! Besides a wiki (wikis are ugly) I'm wondering what would be the best method for creating one.

I have WordPress knowledge and the products necessary to build it (I'm a freelance WP developer on the side), just figuring out the actual card data. I can import nearly everything from the Spreadsheet, but I think the spreadsheet only contains the printed information on the cards, not the Erratas, identifiers, etc. But that stuff can be added after the fact.

Pics are the other thing. I guess the newer sets will just look a lot better than the old ones :P

Before you put too much work into this, ProfAlstad has a soon to be released project that might be what you're thinking of.  8)

I'll check with him today. I know he was in the process of adding RoJ recently.

I tried to get all digital card images back to the beginning from Cactus but they are not available. RoA was the oldest set I can get that wasn't scanned.

I kinda figure somebody had already tried to get them. Thanks Gabe for providing the ones you have gotten on Land of Redemption :)

I am fairly certain doing something like the path described here (http://www.cactusforums.com/off-topic/any-interest/) would be the best way to provide one to a general audience. The browser interface shown is just a front end on a general Redemption API.  Please, please, please spend the time creating a generic web API interface rather than locking everything into a web site with no programmatic access.

You should also feel free to link to any of the images off the Lackey plugin server. As I currently have unlimited outbound bandwidth on the site, it would be easier, cheaper, and just all around better to use the plugin server as an image server.  (Practicing what I preach vis-a-vis API and open access.)

Tbh, I don't know the first thing about API's, but I'm sure I'll be able to learn what's needed when/if the time comes.

Thanks for offering to use the images on your server. It's nice not having to worry about bandwidth of cheap shared hosting :P

Depending what ProfAlstad has in the works I may not even need to do it, but I'd see it a fun opportunity to give a little back if it would be needed.

My dream is to have a single database with literally everything you could know about every card.

Edit: After looking around a bit it looks like there's quite a few options for connecting WP Posts to an API.

I guess I should have read this thread before posting about the Red Dragon image...I do indeed have something in the works, though as of yet it is not planned to be web-based. Perhaps it will eventually, but currently it will be available as a downloadable PDF, similar to the REG.

As for where I got images, I used a variety of sources, including the old wiki, the even older redemptionlive database, the newer sets from LoR, and I even had to scan a few.

I do have lower quality images of older sets if anyone needs them. I eventually plan to get those on LoR too.

How low quality?

I have 344x512 BMP, JPG and GIF format for pretty much everything. I think they are all scans.

I think I'm going to start working on the database site.

@EmJayBee83: I believe I've found a nice easy way to create a JSON API feed from the site. So that will definitely be a thing.

Right now I'll just be setting up the infrastructure of the site whilst awaiting the release of ProfAlstad's new Excell sheet.

I'm really excited that I can put some of my knowledge and experience to work for the Redemption community! I think I'll start a thread soonish. I know there's probably a lot of opinions and suggestions on what needs to be included.
