Title: Opponent controlling the battle with Treachery
Post by: AngrierMob on June 19, 2018, 09:16:35 PM
I was looking through my FoM collection, and I found Treachery. As one of few crimson and brown cards, it seems like it would be a great addition in a brown angry mob deck, especially with the synergy between doomed conspirators and angry mob.

The exact ability is: "Opponent must give you an evil enhancement from hand. Play that evil enhancement regardless of brigade. Cannot be interrupted."

My question is: to anyone who has played with the card, do opponents seem to be able to easily use the card against you or control the battle?

As the one who designed the card, I had high hopes for it during playtesting. Unfortunately it didn't prove terribly successful in the few games I used it, but it's definitely one of those "fun" cards that can catch your opponent off guard. In a meta where people are running very few EE, I think it could still prove effective.

Have a quick question.  What was the reason why the toughness on the enhancement was -3???

Because using Treachery can be treacherous to oneself... ;)

Specially when your opponent give you a card with the end the battle ability and you have smaller numbers

I love the idea of the card but I don't forsee ever using it. After all, why would I risk my opponent not having an enhancement to give me (or worse, having one that's detrimental, like Death of Unrighteous when he's protecting souls) when I could just run an enhancement that wins the battle normally?

Its definitely situational but the payoff could be huge like using his Haman's plot, scattered, and etc..

Edit: Can you imagine ripping your opponents plot lol  ;D

It becomes way stronger when it’s not unknown information. There are so many ways to look at other players hands, it’s just a matter of timing it right.

I'd be so sad to get my plot stolen, used, and ripped by this card lol.

The DoU situation actually happened to me in one of my playtest games (thought the LS weren't protected so I did get the block), but it cost me a fairly valuable EC...  :P

As has been mentioned before, not every card is meant for high-level competitive play. Some cards are designed more as "fun" cards, some cards are designed such that they'll be more useful in multi-player or in a booster draft. Imagine using cards like this in a Panic Demon deck or an Angry Mob deck. Oh the possibilities  ;D

One thing that sometimes gets overlooked with abilities that take cards from opponents (like Taking Egypt's Wealth or Treachery) is that, if nothing else, the card is hand control.  Making an opponent lose a card from hand is a strong ability; decks designed to do this as much as possible have won Nats twice in the last 10 years.

Treachery's balance comes from the additional benefit of getting to play the EE immediately regardless of brigade (which TEW does not do), paired with the risk that your opponent chooses the EE he/she gives.
