Epic Fail

Yesterday we were playing our second round of T1 MP. Everybody at our table of four had won, so we were playing for first place. The order went as follows.

Myself, Jonathan, Aaron, Madison

I knew that Jonathan would have some super-duper-awesome deck, like he always does. I also knew that Aaron and Madison were newer to the game than Jonathan and I, so I was hoping to use that to my advantage.

Jonathan is playing The Garden Tomb. I thought it was an odd choice for MP, but he jumped out to an early 0-3-0-0 lead. I didn't draw any heroes or evil characters for the first two turns so I figured it was going to be over pretty quickly. Then, a very fortunate "revealer" lost soul popped up, putting Jonathan's New Jerusalem on the bottom (which I later killed with Confusion).

Jonathan realized that he wasn't going to be able to get anymore easy lost souls, but he had The Garden Tomb out. He gave each of us a lost soul on our next rescue, just so that GT would work. Aaron and Madison didn't really think about that, they were just happy to get a free lost soul. However, after I rescued a lost soul (making it 1-3-1-1) he played Falling Away on me so I was in last.

Madison had rescued another lost soul and I played SoG/NJ along with making a successful rescue making it 3-3-1-2. Somehow it worked out that Jonathan and I had lost souls in our land of bondage but Madison and Aaron didn't. I suggested that they try to rescue lost souls before Jonathan won (table talk isn't really frowned upon in the NW). Aaron picked up on the suggestion and promptly rescued a lost soul. I could've blocked, but he was in last so I didn't. Madison rescued against me on her turn as well. Up until this point during the game she had been mostly an annoyance, talking up a storm about random things and getting side tracked. But, she had stopped talking for a while so I figured I'd give her a lost soul as well, so Jonathan couldn't get one (I knew he had Son of God since I looked through his deck with Confusion). However, silly me forgot that Madison hadn't used SoG/NJ. By giving her the free lost soul I let her win.

I was fairly disappointed because I could've easily blocked her and gotten another lost soul on my turn before Jonathan won. That would've placed me in second. However, the game ended 3-3-2-5 which meant Jonathan and I tied for third place in the tournament.
