Title: Video Recording Tournament Games?
Post by: Captain Kirk on July 10, 2013, 09:31:32 AM
Hey all,

I had a player ask if they could video record some games at MW Regionals to later share with the community. Is it at the discretion of the host is video recording is allowed or the discretion of players involved in games?

I could understand some players not wanting their national decks to be leaked via video. I would think that nationals would definitely be an appropriate forum as it is the last tournament of a season - should regionals also be an appropriate forum?

Thanks,
Kirk

I would watch. Are you talking live feeds or tape delay?

I think that video recording of an event in general would be up to the host of a tournament.  This would include showing the venue, broad shots of the overall field, etc.

I think that video recording of an individual game would be up to the specific players in the game.   This would include showing cards in those player's decks.

I think that video recording focusing on an individual would be up to that person.  This would include interviews.

Wouldn't you need a signed legal document to film or take a picture of an individual in order to avoid a potential law suit?

1 - I know that there are some technical laws that apply to this sort of thing, but in reality I don't think anyone's going to be suing anyone over showing up in a Redemption tournament video.

2 - If you want to get around all the technical laws, all you have to do (I think) is to post a sign at the table where everyone signs in that there will be video recording during the tournament.  Then people can choose whether to participate or leave if they happen to be one of the FBI's Most Wanted, and really don't want to pop up anywhere on "the grid" :)

Hasn't Rob previously said no video?

As a video professionsal:
If you are focusing on an indivual, you should have a signed release that states you have permission to record them.  If you plan to post the video online, almost every video upload site's terms of service has you agree that all people in your videos have signed such a release.

Filming a general or public group varies by state.  In CA, popparazzi issues have huge restrictions on how I am allowed to film a public group, and if anyone objects, I must stop all recording.  In Boston, there is a requirement that you have a recorded permission from everyone in a public area that you even partically record audio of, and you must get it before recording anything in a public area.

I don't know the Midwest well enough to know if laws are as restricted, but it would probably be wise to have a separate sign-in sheet that says how you intend to use the footage and a means to opt out.

There's more hoops to jump through related to audio recording than video recording. Video recording is legal in the vast majority of cases on public property (which the church may be considered if it's open to the public), and in most situations on private property.

One important note - the tournament is at a university student union, not a church.

I've filmed at my school's student union before and security didn't really care.

I'd be down for that. Sounds fun.

So it was me who asked...does anybody going to MN States/MW Regs have a video camera? I've been asking around and haven't found anybody. :X

If any minors are present, you would need parental permission.
