Title: TN is on the map!!!
Post by: Crashfach2002 on April 26, 2010, 10:09:37 AM
Note:  The Henley Street Bridge is closed you will need to take the James White Parkway exit to get to the tournament!

Directions on how to get to the church:

From the South & West:  Go to I-40 E
From the East: Go to I-40 W
From the North: Go from I-75 to I-40E, and 388A should be the first exit

Once you get to I-40, you will go to James White Parkway, exit 388A A, NOT exit 388!

Once you get off on 388A, you will need to be in the left two lanes.  There is an immediate split and you will split left onto Highway 71.

Stay in the left two lanes until James White Parkway ends.  Don't take any exits!

At the end of James White Parkway, turn right at the light onto Moody.

Pass through the first light (Woodlawn), and then turn left at the second light onto Chapman Highway.  You will travel about 3 or 4 miles down Chapman.

Go through 4 or 5 lights.  There will be a Taco Bell on your left and the church is on your right!

*Same deal here, if we need 5 or more rounds for Type 1 2P we will go ahead and play a 3rd rounds in Multi

Obviously if all the games are completed we will start the next round earlier, so that we can keep the tournament moving and you don't have to be stuck all day and all night long!

For lunch during one of the tournaments I have some hot dogs I will be making.  If you don't eat hot dogs please let me know and I'll see if I can work something out for you.  You are more than welcome to bring your own food, but the hot dogs are part of the entry fee!   ;D

The reason the Booster Draft is $20 is because I'm going to have everything!  FooF/RoA tins, all 7 booster packs & TeP packs!
There are 8 packs though:
-Blue
-Prophets
-Women
-Warriors
-Apostles
-Patriarchs
-Angel Wars
-Priests

I'll be on tour during regionals, but I'd love to go to State if I could find a way to put together a physical deck.

There are acutally 9 packs, because you forgot Kings.  :P  I have the 7 in print ones!  And I have enough cards to build you just about any type 1 deck.  Type 2 would be a little harder to do, but we might be able to come up with something!

I should be able to make both, I will definitely ask off though.

I still have some cards, but I'll send you a decklist of what I don't have and if you'd be generous enough to help me put it together and use it, I'm 80% sure I'll be there.

TN State: 5% chance I make it, 2% chance I bring some people with me
EC Regional: 15% chance I make it, 7% chance I bring some people with me

Either one: 100% chance I'll need a free place to crash (ie. church floor)

Any reason why the percentages are so low?
Yep, 3 reasons.

#1 - It's still a ways away and I really don't have that far away planned out for the most part.

#2 - I just returned from OH State, and have already committed to go to MW Regionals, and will likely hold a KY State.  Adding in more tournaments starts to make weekends pretty crowded, and make explaining to my wife difficult :)

#3 - I've never been to your place before, and I'm always a bit less inclined to go to new places, than places where I'm already familiar with how to get there.

All that being said, I would still like to come.  And if I can get someone to go with me, then it's much more likely that it will happen.

I guess you guys can say TN is legit now!  So please make plans to come, and let me know if you need a place to stay, I have a bed that can sleep 2, a couch, and an air mattress.  I'm also trying to get permission to have everyone just bring an air mattress and sleep at the church, but don't have permission to do that just yet!  I'll keep you updated on that!

I'm glad to hear you are going to make it Matt!  Also if any of you guys have extra commons & uncommons that you are looking to get rid of, I'm starting a play group this summer!  I'm going to start teaching some of the kids/youth at my church how to play during the summer (since students get board during the summer).  So any cards that you guys would donate that would be AWESOME!  (even if they are from the original/prophets).  So far I've got Tyler looking to stay at my place and maybe Matt.  So I still have some room!

Actually I suspect that we would go the south route, which would mean that the first place we could meet would be London, KY.  But I do like the idea of joining up.  Road trips are always more fun with more people.

So any cards that you guys would donate that would be AWESOME!
I'm sure I can bring some stuff to donate to a good cause.

Yeah the plan is Booster on Friday, hopefully we can get all 4 of the other categories on Sat.

About Sealed, I wanted to try something different.  I only wanted 1 category people had to pay for and really wanted to do Closed deck!

Hey guys sorry for the slight delay in the schedule for State. (I've started a new job this week, so I'm getting use to it!).  The schedule is going to be!

Friday night:  Booster draft (when my bro & Atl guys get here!)  & Closed Deck (we will probably draft & play first round Friday night, we will finish Sat.)

Saturday:  First, Type 2 - 2 player, Next, Type 1 - 2 player & Last, Type 1 - Multi player.

Depending on how many people we have we might not do round robin for closed, since I know some (if not all) of the Atl guys have to leave a little early!

By the way, please have your deck(s) built, at least your Type 2 deck!  That means you Clift!   :P

No we are playing Type 1 - 2 Player & Multi-Player, Type 2 - 2 Player & Multi-Player & Booster Draft (with everything, FooF/RoA cards plus every booster plus TeP)!

So I would like to not pair anything, so everyone could play everything.  But if I have to pair something, I'll probably pair Type 1 - Multi & Booster.

Ok, since everyone is wanting a schedule lets make one!

Friday night: Type 2 - Multi-Player, checking in decks on players arrival, starting at 8:05 p.m.

We will be spending the night at the church, so bring an air mattress and/or sleeping bag/sheets!

Saturday Morning: Type 2 - 2 Player, schedule says 9:00 a.m. (if everyone is going to be there Friday night, then we will try to start earlier)
Then, Type 1 - 2 Player
Then, Type 1 - Multi-Player and depending on time I might have to pair it with Booster Draft.

If the majority would rather play booster then we will play booster, then everyone who can stay will play multi, or the other way around!

Hopefully we can play quick enough to get everything in.  Plus I'm judging Type 2, so I can check in the Type 1 decks while the tournament is going on, so we don't have to wait too long for that!

East Central Regional Tournament Starts: 8:00p.m. Friday and 9:00am Saturday.
Hey, What is the line up for this weekend?  Will it be Booster on Friday and type 1 and type 2 categories on Saturday?
Yeah the plan is Booster on Friday, hopefully we can get all 4 of the other categories on Sat.
Is the plan still for Booster on Friday night?  I was assuming that your other schedules that you posted later in this thread were about TN State tourney, and that the schedule for the Regional is still Booster Fri night, but I wanted to check and make sure.

If you're later schedules (with T2-mp on Fri) are for the Regional, then could you pair it with Booster or T1-mp so that my guys who don't have T2 decks have something to play?  Anyway, I'm hoping to come, and hoping to bring a few guys with me.

Actually, my ideal would be to have Booster paired up with one T2 event, and T1-mp paired up with the other T2 event.  Otherwise, my guys will have nothing to do for a while, since they don't have T2 decks at all.

Just do type 1 multi during type 2 2 player, and type 2 multi during type 1 multi that way me and  Chris could check in different categories and everyone could play. Then we could do swiss for sealed, and booster friday night.

Mark,

I thought you were riding with Matt Archibald?  If you are bringing guys with you, I assume that is no longer the case.  Also, you could have your guys make T1 decks into T2 decks, which may not be super competitive, but Jon Potter placed 2nd a few years back at nationals after doing such.

crashfach,

What is the plan for sealed deck?  Matt was going to send you an e-mail about that.  Also, I would pair T1-Multi with a T2 event as well and you could pair Sealed with the other if needed. I feel like everyone is going to want to play Booster, so if we have the time to, I think we should save Booster by itself at the end.

However, it sounds like we could just play T2 2p and T1 2p without having to pair them.

OK I talked to Rob, and he is cool with me adding Sealed.  I will supply the Redemption Cash & TeP prize, as well as the booster packs.  I know Matt & Kirk said they would cover that, but I have the extra supplies, plus I'm the host so I feel obligated!  So I will need Matt to supply the G/H starter decks, since I have the E/F starter decks (and I was told they were no good!  :)).  So how about this for a schedule!

Friday night:  Tourney starts at 8:05 (just to make sure everything is checked in)

Type 2 - Multi Player paired with Type 1 - Multi Player

When we finish Type 1 - Multi Player, we will go ahead and start our sealed tournament, and try to make it round robin (depending on how many people participate), until Type 2 - Multi Player is done.  Then anyone who wants to play sealed from the Type 2 players can draft and play their first game, then we will either quit for bed or let individuals continue to play their Sealed games.

Saturday Morning:  Starting at 9:00 (at the latest)

Type 2 - 2 Player paired with Sealed deck*.
Type 1 - 2 Player
Booster Draft

We can switch up Saturday based on what everyone is wanting to do.  But I think if we do it this way, we can play the paired categories and it would be about time for lunch, and we can stop to eat and check in Type 1 decks then just play the last two categories straight through!

* If we have most of the players playing Type 2 - Multi Player, then we could probably get a round robin style in!  That would also let Matt & Kirk play, since they are the ones that wanted to and not make them miss the Type 2 tourney if they want to play it.

My guys favorite events are T1-2p, T1-mp, TEAMS, and Booster.  Can we possibly get one of those on Fri evening?

2 ways that I can think to do it would be to either switch Sealed and T1-mp.
or
Switch both Fri evening events with both Sat morning events.

Will either of those options work for you Crash?

Friday night:  Tourney starts at 8:05 (just to make sure everything is checked in)
Type 2 - Multi Player paired with Type 1 - Multi Player
Sealed Deck (part 1)
Saturday Morning:  Starting at 9:00 (at the latest)
Type 2 - 2 Player paired with Sealed deck (part 2)
Type 1 - 2 Player
Booster Draft
This looks good.  Any chance we could add in TEAMS to run at the same time as T2-2p?  If not, then this schedule looks fine :)

THe problem would be the number of people willing to play teams.  I would be willing to play but if you schedule it against T2-2player then I wont be available lol.

The problem would be the number of people willing to play teams.
As long as there were 2 TEAMS willing to play, it would be a legal event :)

The problem that I'm running into is that my guys have no money and no T2 decks.  Therefore, if it is just T2-2p and Sealed, then they'll have to just sit and watch.  But if TEAMS were at that time, then they could play each other.  They're also going to have to sit and watch at the end while I play Booster, so I'm just trying to avoid a situation where they have to sit and watch during 2 events if possible.

That's a generous offer.  I'm confident of having 2 guys with me, and it's possible that I'll have 4 guys with me.  I'll get back to you after I talk to them about preferences, and have a clearer idea of how many exactly will be coming.  1 of them is pretty experienced, but the other 3 are beginners so the decks would need to be pretty basic for them.

I have two extra, and they are no slouch decks.  They are just decks (mostly easy to use metagame types such as AocP abuse) That I have for my other playgroup members to use.  I tore one of them apart tonight but I can have a suitable replacement built pretty soon.  I have a FbtN Banding deck that I have been wanting to build and I have most of the cards, I just need to put a defense with it.

So If I build that one, I will have 2 decks that are solid, easy to play decks, that they can use.

GA did sweep almost all.  I had a very rough tournament.  I misplayed my t2 deck and lost big time.  In booster I kept getting 4 LS's and then failing to make the 5th...  it was the always a bridesmaid and never a bride tournament for me. :/

Prof's Tourney Report:

Fri night: T2-mp (no idea), T1-mp (described below), Sealed Deck (I did poorly)
The first game I was paired up with the Fachman brothers and one of my KY guys Drew.  The Fachman brothers decks were fast, and I had a hard time keeping up, but there were a LOT of great stops throughout the game and by the end everyone was all tied up at 4 LSs.  We went around the table again, but no one was able to get to 5 so we timed out at a 4-way tie.

The 2nd game, Drew and I rolled the dice higher and got bumped up to play with the big dogs who won the other game (Crustpope and DJWT).  I was blessed with an incredible draw.  My first attack was blocked by DJ, but then I sniped his EC while taking a LS from Drew on my 2nd turn.  My 3rd turn DJ learned from the last time and just gave me the LS.  My 4th turn I got a LS off someone, and played SoG/NJ for the win.  Drew came in 2nd and also made it to the champ table for the final round.

The 3rd game was with myself (4pts) Daniel Fachman (4pts), Crustpope (3pts), and Drew (2pts).  I was blessed again with an incredible draw, but there were going to be things that could mess it up.  At one point in the game I had SoG/NJ in hand, but only 5 cards total.  Crust had set aside with the teal GE and was deciding how many cards for each of us to put under our decks.  If he picked 4, then I’d lose either SoG or NJ to the bottom of my deck.  Thankfully he picked 3.  Then later in the game I had rescued 3 LS, and still had SoG/NJ in hand.  But there were 0 LSs on the table for me to take.  Crust had Hur in his territory and was planning on attacking me with him on his turn.  That would’ve also sent 1 of my combo back into my deck.  But amazingly on Crust’s turn he drew 2 LSs, and I was able to take them both for the win before he could attack me.

Sat morning: T2-2p (I slept through it after staying up until 5:30am playing Sealed Deck).

Sat afternoon: T1-2p
The first game I was paired with DJWT, and was blessed with all the right stuff for a 5-0 win.  The second game I was paired with adotson (who I’ve played online, but never live).  I was blessed again and won 5-2.  The third round I was playing RTSmaniac, and this time he was the blessed one.  I already had 4 LSs, with SoG/NJ already played.  I was going in for LS #5 and he had no way to stop me.  He played Mayhem, drew the 2-liner (which he gave me half), and his SoG (which he used to win 5-4).  The last game was against Crustpope, and I was blessed once more, and got all that I needed for a 5-2 win.  RTSmaniac went on to win the championship game against CaptainKirk 5-1, so I came in 2nd overall due to differential.

Sat evening: Booster
Opening packs would’ve been a complete disappointment if it weren’t for the generosity of CaptainKirk and RTSmaniac who were in my group.  I never saw an UR (or even a good rare like CotH) except for the ones they passed me (WoP, Altar of Ahaz, and one of the Armor of Gods).  AofA didn’t even make it into my deck, but it’s always nice to walk away with gold-bordered cards.  I was pretty concerned about how good their decks must have been to pass those on though.  I was also concerned about my offense which had to be split across 4 brigades, and which I never saw a character to fit with my Tin theme of prophets.  I liked my defense though which was solid Grey and seemed pretty decent.  It turned out that none of our decks seemed very good.

The first round, RTSmaniac had such an awesome defense that he basically didn’t get attacked all game.  Thankfully his offense didn’t show up, which gave the rest of us time.  CaptainKirk and I just kept attacking each other and taking LSs until we were tied at 4.  My defense never really worked out as well as I hoped, and Kirk ended up getting the win.

The second round, I was paired again with RTSmaniac and with adotson?.  Adotson started drawing awesome defense right off the bat, and it looked like I wouldn’t be able to get any LSs from either of them that game.  Thankfully, RTSmaniac’s defense didn’t show up that game and Adotson couldn't draw a hero to save his life, so I was able to walk in for several easy LSs.  Finally, I was able to sneak past Adotson’s defense for the win.

The last round, I was paired again with CaptainKirk and Daniel Fachman (who I had no idea had the most awesome Booster deck ever).  Daniel had the Phillys on defense and drafted Garrison to go with them.  He also had 2 copies of Morgan and 2 copies of a WC EE to go on him.  It was nasty, and the only soul anyone got off him the whole game was a sneaky one I took with Ehud CTB.  He also had an awesome offense with Daniel heroes and a drafted Daniel and MICHAEL to band to.  Thankfully some of this offense was discarded by blocks that I made on Kirk, and some by the deck-discard LS, and some with blocks that I made against him.  So his offense ended up not doing too much for most of the game.  My defense really did show up that game and I was able to stop both opponents on many blocks and wipe out most of the best heroes in the game.  However, Kirk’s defense also did really well and wiped out most of my good heroes.  In the end it came down to us all being tied up again at 4 LSs, and going around the table a couple more times.  Finally I was able to attack Kirk with Ehud CTB and hope that I picked an EC that he had run out of EEs for.  He actually did have 1 EE left, and sniped someone in territory before dying and giving me the winning LS.  I certainly did NOT have the best deck in Booster, and it was only the grace of God that enabled me to end up on top.

Your draft must have not been too bad to have drafted a SoG and NJ in booster!  ;)

Thanks for pointing that out.  That 2nd game went so quickly that in my memory I assumed it ended with the typical SoG/NJ, but of course no one had those cards.  I also imagined the FA because I remembered taking more than 3 LSs, but of course without SoG/NJ that would make sense as well.  Funny how our memories of things are so easily misled.

It was actually Morgan ;)

I'll probably send some stuff off by the end of this month.  I'm going to try to have one every month.  I don't expect anyone from out of town to come to my locals, mostly because I'm probably just going to do one category and use it as a way for my new players to get experience and promos!

Hopefully by the time we have a district, TN will have a dozen representatives!  We have the "big four"; Andrew, DY, my brother & me.  I've started a new playgroup and I've already had 7 new players introduced to the game with at least 4 more interested.  Plus I know of 5 somewhat experiened players in the area I'm trying to get to tournaments!

Similar sentiments here.  I'm in my annual fall stage of rebuilding a playgroup with the new students who have arrived.  We have a lot of new guys who are still learning the game and aren't ready yet for the competition of vets like you guys :)

We'll might travel to 1 district level tourney either down there or up in Cincy between now and Christmas.  And we'll definitely travel to something in the spring semester.  Keep up the great work down there, and we'll get together sometime.

New tournament posted, sorry for the little notice.  I'm having local every month, mostly for my new playgroup members.  If you are interested in coming, let me know.  Depending on where you live it might not be worth the trip.  (Unless of course you want to see my pretty face!   ;D)

Per this post I assumed it was a local.  My bad if I am mistaken.  I still cant come because I am swamped with work

report?

I know the standings for both Booster and Sealed were:

1. Andrew Dotson (me)
2. Daniel Young (Carl Deuty)
3. Chris Fachman (CrashFach2002)

I somehow pulled off wins in both events. For booster we drafted one tin and all the packs, except womens and warriors. I got the teal/orange FooF tin. I know Clift would love this as I got to totally decimate a Caleb+Army+Men of Judah band with Two Possessed by Demons, which is awesome when SoG is nowhere to be found. I won the first game, Chris won the second and Daniel Young won the last. I won thanks to differential. To top it all off my random TxP card turned out to be Mayhem!

My sealed draft was especially nasty on defense. I drafted a Nero, HHI, Herod's Dungeon and 2 Herods. I won my first game 5-4 against Daniel Young, won my second game 5-4 against Daniel Fachman and won my last game 5-3 against Chris Fachman. I was very blessed to take these two categories as I usually do not fair that well in booster or sealed.

Hey Mark, I was looking at having a District on the 16th, but I'll talk to my guys and see if they can come up there.  If we can, I'll reschedule my District and try to make our State on the 30th, if nothing is going on at the church.  Is April the only time your kids could come down or could we have it the first or second weekend of May?  Just trying to see what dates are best for everyone.

Assuming that you're talking to me here...

We have tournaments in KY coming up on:
March 26th - District
April 16th - KY State
July 9th - EC Regional

We're also hoping to join Crash for a TN State tourney either:
April 9th
April 30th
or May 7th

And as for training, I think my students should put up a good showing this year.  They aren't on Maniac level or anything, but they might turn a few heads at a tourney :)

I'm double checking but May 7th seems to be the most definate.  I'm also going to have to talk to a couple of the guys, I think we are probably going to go to KY's tournament too.  We have a youth fund raiser on that night, but I think we can probably still go!

I love how I have to check the boards and see when our tournies are bc Chris neglects me. The first weekend in may would probably be best for our state cause I will have mini term starting the week after. So, if I am only thinking about redemption and not the american revolution or some other historical event, than I will most definitely win. Thanks in advance. type 1 2 player state champ two years in a row.

Yep, East Central Regionals will be up here on July 8-9th.

I'm also hoping to bring down a group of players for the TN State tourney and hoping it will be the first weekend of May (before all our students leave for the summer).

KY State is April 15-16th, and we'd love to have you guys come join us then as well :)

Can you even get it in time now for that weekend?  I was scrambling to beat the six week mark for May 6/7 five days ago. I'm not saying you can't because Rob is a nice guy, but I would strongly encourage you to get the paperwork in "yesterday."

You might want to also include a note that you've talked about this date on the forum with all of the active playgroups in nearby states, and that several people are planning on coming if it is that date.  Rob would probably be more likely to be willing to be a bit short on notice if he knows that the relevant people have already received notice :)

Alright guys, Rob is the BEST!  He has helped me out yet again.  The TN state has actually been moved up.  The tournament was either going to be moved to April 30th, so the KY guys could come or back to June, which the KY guys couldn't make it.  Rob has allowed me to have it the last weekend in April despite not have the paper work turned in, in time!  So make plans to be here, and I'll have the schedule up in the next few days!  And thank Rob, as long you can make it!

Knoxville, TN--April 30, 2011
9 P.M. - 12:30 A.M.:  Booster Draft & Unofficial TEAMS -or- Official T1-mp?
8 A.M. - 12:00 P.M.:  Type 1 - 2 Player
12:30 P.M. - 5:30 P.M.:  Type 2 - Multi-Player & Type 1 - Multi-Player (or Unofficial TEAMS if T1-mp is Fri night?)
6:30 P.M. - 11:00 P.M.:  Type 2 - 2 Player & Unofficial Type 1 - Teams (For Mark's guys!)
Could we have the unofficial TEAMS tournament or the T1-mp on Fri night instead of Sat night.  That would give my guys something to do who don't have enough money to pay for Booster?

Yeah, this is what I'm going to work on over the next couple of days.  I will probably do Type 1 - Multi Friday night.  I'm trying to decide if we can do Type 2 - Multi with it.  I'm going to brain storm several different schedules and then get which one you feel is best!

My guess is that most of the GA guys will want to play T2-mp AND Booster, so running those at the same time is probably not a great idea.  However, most of them probably don't want to play T1-mp, so running that at the same time as Booster is probably fine.  Then you could run a LATE night T2-mp for the few people who would be up for that event anyway.  It's always kinda crazy anyway, and doing it late at night when people are a bit slap-happy could just make it even more hilarious :)

That would make it possible for everyone to play T1-2p Sat morning, and then to split in the afternoon for T2-2p and TEAMS.

8:30 P.M. - 1:00 A.M.:  Booster Draft   / Teams (unofficial)
8 A.M. - 12:00 P.M.:  Type 1 - 2 Player  & Type 2 - Multi-Player
12:30 P.M. - 5:00 P.M.:  Type 1 - Multi-Player & Type 2 - 2 Player

If anybodys wants to we can start a round robin sealed deck as well, I can send Rob extra money and make it official too!
This schedule looks great.  If it's possible to add Sealed as an official category, would it be possible to change the TEAMS to official as well?

If that's possible, then could we switch T1-mp with TEAMS?  Is there anyone really wanting to play Booster and T1-mp?  Because if it's just my guys playing T1-mp, then it would work better for me to have Booster line up with T1-mp, and then have TEAMS line up with T2-2p.

All the Knoxville guys will want to play Booster. Its probably our favorite besides type 2, but we don't really care about type 1 multi.

That shouldn't be a problem.  The biggest thing is that Tyler was going to judge the Type 1 while I judge the Type 2.  I know we don't really need it with the experience of the players there, but with him not being there, it kinda threw a wrench in it.  So I had planned on playing the Type 1 categories, but since he isn't coming, I guess you could judge Type 2 & I could jump to playing Type 2 & judging Type 1.  So basically, it boils down to if I can put together another Type 2 deck by then.  But lets plan on it that way!

Boy is that an understatement. These guys save thier booster draft decks and play a league where they add cards from thier draft. What I like is thier decks consist of more than 1 copy of a card. NICE!

I dont know, remember you said Elymas (Bar-Jesus) the Sorcerer (Ap) could discard a hero without having to discard a demon if one wasnt available?

Elymas (Bar-Jesus) the Sorcerer (Ap)
Type: Evil Char. • Brigade: Gray • Ability: 5 / 8 • Class: None • Special Ability: Holder must discard a demon from holder's territory and may discard one Hero from each opponent's territory. • Play As: Holder must discard a demon from holder's territory. If a demon if discarded, holder may discard one Hero from each opponent's territory. • Identifiers: NT Male Human, Magician, Prophet • Verse: Acts 13:8 • Availability: Apostles booster packs (Rare)

I've always heard that you HAVE to discard a demon TO discard a human!  One of those fun cost/benefit, not "do as much as you can" cards.

Yeah, I was wrong on that one.  It was a Booster draft, and I didn't have the "Play As" memorized for that card back then considering no one really uses that card normally.  The "Play As" does make it clear that it is a cost/benefit SA.  I apologize for messing up that one, and will try to do better this year :)

Except that is an errata disguised as a play as (since the printed ability is NOT a cost/benefit), so shouldn't it be ignored?

Well I guess I'll give a little tourney wrap-up, since no one else has yet.

Fri night, I arrived with 5 other people from our KY playgroup.  Since Junior/Senior (kinda like Prom) was that weekend, many of our more experienced players weren't able to go.  But it was a good chance for our less-experienced players to have a chance to shine.  Chris was a great host as usual, and when we showed up there were plenty of snacks to eat and product to buy.  There were only a couple guys from GA (RTSmaniac and his nephew) and a handful of people from TN, so there ended up being more KY people than any other state represented :)

Fri night had both T1-mp and Booster going at the same time, and due to the generosity of our host, almost everyone played Booster.  3 of my people opted out, and therefore Isaiah, Chris, and Alecia took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively in T1-mp.  It was Isaiah's first tournament ever, and he was even borrowing a deck to play with at that point.  However he picked up the game quickly and obviously was successful.  I was proud of Alecia who placed for the first time in a tournament, and who was close to winning multiple games.

Meanwhile the rest of us played Booster with every pack except Warriors.  I drafted at a table with RTSmaniac and his nephew.  None of us seemed to get anything amazing for winning, although I was happy to get a Wall of Protection that I needed.  We were disappointed that there were no Falling Aways at our table in the women's packs, and I was disappointed that with all those cards I still had an offense that was spread over 4 or 5 brigades.  My defense was decent, but also wasn't stellar, so I didn't have high hopes for the event.  However, I was able to win the first game and advance to the top table.  The 2nd round was really quick.  Ian started the game with TGT and a couple banding ladies, and no one seemed to be able to get 2 of the same brigade ECs on the table to block him.  So he basically walked in for 5.  I was happy to get to 4 before he finished the game, and so still got something for my trouble and stayed at the top table for the last round.  3 of us were tied with 4 LS in the final game, and it was my turn to go for the win.  2 people had LSs to rescue, Ian (who I had very little idea about his defense) and RTSmaniac (who I knew was about out of defense).  I went in with Gabriel and he blocked with 2 ECs that banded.  I negated the band, he negated everything with Midianite Attack, and all I had was a Striking Herod that wouldn't work, and didn't have enough numbers to get higher than him.  In retrospect, I should've attacked Ian, and he probably couldn't have stopped me since he couldn't stop RTSmaniac when he attacked him and won the game.  Oh well, hindsight is always 20/20.  Anyway, RTSmaniac ended in 1st, I in 2nd, and Josh (I think) ended in 3rd.

Many of my players decided to stay up all night playing extra games for fun, and paid for it the next day by being really sleepy.  In fact, one of them (Kayleb) was on track to place in T2-mp Saturday morning, but he put his head down at one point, and fell asleep during the final round game.  The other players tried to wake him up a couple times when it was his turn, but he just couldn't wake up, so they just skipped him each time around after that and so naturally he lost.  Let that be a lesson to everyone, to get some sleep on the Fri nights of tourneys :)

Meanwhile, most of us were playing T1-2p Sat morning.  I went undefeated except for another matchup with RTSmaniac.  He just had my number at that tournament, and totally dominated me in a game that I talk about in this other thread. (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/index.php?topic=26565.msg417342#msg417342)  He ended up taking 1st again.  I ended up in 2nd again.  And Josh ended up in 3rd again.  Also of note, my player Chris finished in 4th, and my daughter Alecia again did not finish in last :)

In the afternoon, there was the T2-2p tournament which I really didn't follow at all, but that I know RTSmaniac also won.  But myself and all of my playgroup were playing TEAMS!  My playgroup people kept switching teammates, and so in the end, I decided to team up with my daughter Alecia.  I was concerned that it might not go well considering that she is still really a novice at the game, and I am pretty competitive.  I didn't want her to mess up and for me to get really mad at her and ruin the experience.  At the same time, I really hoped it could be a really positive Daddy/Daughter time, and thankfully that was how it worked out.  I played a defense-heavy deck and basically shut down both of our opponent's each game, and she played an offense heavy deck, and got enough LSs for the win each game.  The closest call we had was at one point where our opponents played an AoC (not Promo) and I didn't see any way to save all our ECs that were down in the territory.  I knew we had the block, and we had a couple ECs in a KotW, but I really didn't want to lose all those ECs.  Then at the last minute Alecia noticed that she had Unsuccessful active, and used it to negate the AoC.  I was so proud of her.  So we finished in 1st, Ian/Logan finished in 2nd, and Chris/Isaiah ended in 3rd.

Overall, it was a great tournament.  All my playgroup had a wonderful time.  They met some great guys, and came home with a ton more cards than they showed up with, thanks to a lot of generous trades.  Thanks to Chris for making it all possible.  We'll look forward to returning the favor when you guys all come up for EC Regionals in July :)

Explained:I called clift in the middle of top table of booster and talked to Prof Underwood and other thoughout the tourney. I was also falling asleep.

That's true, there was a rather surreal experience during the final game of Booster draft where Red called Clift, and so he just put it on speakerphone, and set it on the table.  So we talked to him a bit as we played, although it was hard to carry on a conversation and stay focused on the game, so we didn't do it for very long :)

1st solution.  Ask for someone who is going to pick you up along the way.
2nd solution.  It's $10 to play all the open events.  Mow your neighbor's yard 1 time and you're good.

Prof's Tourney Report:
We came in Fri night around 7:30pm and there were a ton of people there.  It was particularly good to see Chris (Crashfach), Clift (RTSmaniac), Jay (Red), Tyler (Mr. Hiatus), Josh (knoxyouthpastor), and Logan again as well as to meet a lot of new players from TN who are learning the game quickly and having a blast.  Some of the ladies even brought cake!

We brought in a big group down from our KY playgroup:
Ian Kratzer
Caleb Stanley
Kayleb Matthews
Drew Wills
Jedediah Wills
Jason Waugh (1st big tourney ever)
Kyle Waugh (1st big tourney ever)
Alecia Underwood

TEAMS:
We started late and ended in the wee hours of the morning, but it was a great event with 10 teams competing.  I teamed up with Kayleb Matthews who has been my primary partner this year.  Our best success before this tournament was winning the Redemption for Micah tournament last fall.  But we'd actually gone undefeated all season thus far.

Our first round was against a couple ladies from TN who were pretty new to the game.  It was a mother and daughter, and they were fun opponents.  We had a good game and tried to teach them a few tricks along the way to a 5-0 victory.

Second round was against a father and son (Jason & Kyle Waugh).  It was a much tougher game, and ended up 5-3.  However they didn't let it get them down as they worked their way back up the rankings the last couple rounds to end up in 3rd place overall.

I don't actually remember who our 3rd round was against, but the score ended up 5-0 again.

The last round was against Caleb Stanley and Logan (RTSM's nephew).  They had an early loss, but seemed to be back on track.  However things derailed for them in the final round and we had yet another 5-0 win.  We had let them take back some pretty big misplays along the way though so I felt really good about everything.  Going undefeated did of course put us in 1st place, but I was also really proud that my daughters were able to work their way up from a rough 1st round defeat to end up in 2nd place.

Overall, KY ended up taking all 3 top spots in TEAMS.  Meanwhile we had 1 player who decided to try his hand at Sealed instead.  That was Ian Kratzer (defending Nats champion in that category).  He also went undefeated, and took 1st in that event as well.

T1-mp:

After getting to sleep around 4am, we were ready to start T1-mp only a few hours later.  I think I was partly asleep because I don't remember much.  I think I won my first game, then lost the 2nd by getting blown away by Jay decking out on turn 2.  I won again in my 3rd game which put me in the championship game for the final round.

The other players were Caleb Stanley (who'd won every game so far), Jay (who was also 2-1), and Logan (who was 1-2 with some 2nd place points).  Both Caleb and Jay were actually playing similar decks and Jay again decked out on turn 2.  It was a super close game, and after a while Caleb and Jay, were tied with 4 LSs each, while Logan and I had 2.  It was my turn and the only LSs on the table were in Jay's and my territory where we all knew he could block with Foreign Wives.  But I also knew that I wouldn't be able to hold off Jay AND Caleb, so it wasn't getting back around to me.  Therefore I had to draw my SoG/NJ, and my deck was small.  So I put 4 under from Feast of Trumpets giving me 4 more and finishing the combo.  I played SoG/NJ to tie up with the leaders at 4.  But neither Caleb nor Logan drew any LSs in their 4 cards, so I still had no chance to take #5.

I then played Mayhem and drew a new 6 cards with everyone else.  But alas neither Caleb nor Logan drew any LSs again.  So out of 20 cards I made them draw not a 1 was a LS.  I went ahead and attacked Jay anyway, and as expected he blocked with his invincible Foreign Wives.  My chances were over.  Then Jay attacked me by using a TGT hero considering I didn't have more than 1 EC left of any brigade.  However, he had forgotten that Logan hadn't played Christian Martyr yet, and that ended up costing Jay the game.  But right afterward, Caleb attacked and got the walk-in LS for #5 and the undefeated championship.  Jay came in 2nd, and I ended up in 3rd.  There were actually 2 guys in a lower game that would've passed me for 3rd if they'd won their final game, but thankfully Drew Wills won that game and saved my placing :)

T1-2p:
The main event had 30 players, including the top players from GA (RTSmaniac & Mr. Hiatus), AL (Red), KY (Caleb and myself), and TN (hosting).  So it was going to be a great tune-up for Nats.

My first round was unfortunately against my daughter Alecia.  She played well, but in the end lost 5-3.

My second round was against Jedediah Wills.  He also played well, but ended up losing 5-3 as well.

My third round opponent was against his older, more experienced older brother Drew Wills.  He almost beat me, but I was able to barely squeak out the win 5-4.

Fourth round was against Logan who was using RTSmaniac's deck and who had been having a lot of success with it.  Again it was a super close game, but I was able to just barely get the win again 5-3.  It actually could have been 4-3, but Logan decided to save his Haman's Plot for the final round since he would've still been losing anyway, and if he won the last round he was likely to get 2nd place overall.

My last round was against Jay (Red).  He had been on fire that day and had already beaten both Tyler (Mr. Hiatus) and Clift (RTSmaniac).  We were the last two unbeatens, and going head-to-head in person after playing each other many times online.  His draw was good, and he started off very aggressively.  Amazingly I was able to hold him off several times despite some very high-percentage rescue attempts on his part.  Some of them were even pretty sneaky and unexpected.  Unfortunately though he wasn't drawing LSs despite me feeling confident of taking some.  Then to make matters worse his mid-game Mayhem reset my hand much worse than it had been and so by the time he had LSs available, I no longer had the offense I needed to get them.  At the same time my defense was giving out, and things were not looking good.

By the time he was decked out, he had 4 LSs, and was going in for number 5 with several battle-winners still in hand.  I actually had options in my hand to deal with 3 of the 4, however the 4th one was impossible for me to overcome, and so he broke through for #5 and the undefeated championship.  Annoyingly if I'd been able to stop that last rescue, I'm pretty sure I would've won 1st place myself.  However with my low differential I went from the championship game to finishing 4th overall.  Red came in 1st of course, Clift came in 2nd, and Caleb Stanley ended up in 3rd.  Caleb finishing 1 spot ahead of me was even more annoying since he did the same thing at Nats last year (11th to my 12th).  This is just going to give him more cause to rub it in my face :)

Overall:
Chris was a great host as always.  The fellowship was great, the food was good, the prizes were generous, the competition was high, and the games were close and fun.  The East Central region continues to be strong, and seems to even be getting stronger.  Considering that most other parts of the country over the last 6 years have experienced a downturn after hosting Nats, this is very unusual.  Perhaps we should have Nats in TN more often :)
