Title: Southern Pa/MD local
Post by: Jmbeers on February 07, 2012, 01:32:16 PM
There is going to be an open local on March 24th at 701 Black Rock Rd. Hanover Pa
(not too far from you Maryland players)
We will be starting at 9:00

As its the first tournament at this location I can only guess at turn out so please let me know here if you'll be coming

We will be playing the basics:
Booster (New Tins! And TXP) [$20.00]
T1-2P
T2-2P

We will be playing both 2P events at the same time, booster is being decided.

I am attempting to make plans to be there as well.  If I'm in a decent mood I might bring Drrek along too.

He would like that far too much, so out of the question.  Now...maybe if there was freezing rain that day...hmm....

On a side note, any Maryland people want to ride up with Blake and I that day?  I live in Cockeysville just off 83, making it a good stopping place.  Just let me know.  I could fit at least two more people comfortably in my car.

I now have room for one comfortably-seated person and one contortionist (or one very small person...or a very small contortionist) if any Maryland people want to ride with me from the Cockeysville area.

By my count at this moment we should have a turn out of at least 12 players so this will be a fairly good sized local.

I revived the materials in the mail today (finally) so just thought I'd point out that this is official and will be happening on the 24th as scheduled.

Just an update on seating, I currently have 2 people who want to ride with me, and 3 people who MAY ride with me.  If you want a spot from Cockeysville/Hunt Valley to and from, then send me a message ASAP, please so I can try to figure it out.

Also, if you're one of the 'maybe's, please let me know for sure soon :)

I've been thinking about it, and am leaning heavily toward implementing the rule changes (contacting the participants won't be an issue) but I thought I'd see how you guys feel about it?

Let me know and I'll post the final decision tonight. Thanks...

As others have pointed out in my conversations with them, if these are the new rules, we should get used to them quickly.  A Local would be a good time.

However, I am very much opposed to rule #3 (optional dom-cap).  Would like my deck to be legal without asking :)

Post by: Jmbeers on March 16, 2012, 07:04:08 AM
There's no way I will impose #3 which I hate as well,

It will simply be a Dom for each soul if we do the new rules.

Alright, I have 2 people confirmed riding with me from Cockeysville/Hunt Valley and one probable.  If you want a ride, now's the time to make sure your spot is secured.

Good question, just noticed Multi is not listed.  If that is the case, I'd also like to know if they are being run against each other to prepare :)

Yes, they will be running at seperate times.

With all due respect, that's a bad idea. Not everyone that has a t2 deck has a t1 and vice versa. They should be against each other or we are going to be there all day...we will need to leave Hanover no later than 4:30 to make it back at a decent hour...

While I understand this sentiment, and we need to work with everyone's schedule, I agree with Shawn that a lot of times there is no time for fellowship and just being together at these tournaments with the hectic pace.  If some people do not play the other category (I know I would cross over for one), they can spend time in discussion and fellowship.

However, if some people have time constraints, that may have to be addressed.

Jerome,
I'm trying to come.  I'm not sure though only because my wife has a baby u/s scheduled that day around 11am.  We're trying to change it so I can come.  If I do come there will be two other players with me.  I'll keep you posted.  If we come all three of us will prolly do T1 and the booster draft.

We don't have Type 2 decks yet.  We're still trying to master type 1 and all the rules.  Since I found the REG online I realized how much I have to learn.  But you guys have been amazing thus far with giving pointers as I play you.  Thanks again so much!

2-3 hours is quite a bit for fellowship time, which is what we would have running Type 1 and then Type 2 and then Booster. If the host wants to use this schedule (and we are the only ones constrained for time) then we should do Booster first...

I actually disagree here. If we do Booster last, we can set up for it while the last game(s) of the category before Booster are finishing up, so we can get started asap. Plus, if people need to leave during a tournament, I think doing it during Booster is a better option, since we have a habit of borrowing cards from each other (especially me... love you Brad). I'm not too picky, but I think having Booster last is less messy. That said, honestly, if we keep at it, I think we can easily knock out three categories before 4:30. That gives us 7 and a half hours, and that's manageable I think.
Title: Re: Southern Pa/MD local
Post by: TechnoEthicist on March 18, 2012, 08:29:28 PM
Except I'm the one bringing the supplies :P. And I have no experience to speak of for running all three back to back. It just seems silly to have a large amount of people have 2-3 hours of downtime for a few of us to play type 2 because a few people want to play both categories...Depending on the final schedule will determine what time Gretel and I show up. Because if I can get a few more hours of sleep before driving almost 2.5 hours we might just not show up until the 2nd category starts...I hate to be such a negative nancy here but this schedule design does not make any real feasible sense...

And to give you an idea of my concern, let's run some hypotheticals. Say we have 12 show up that wanted to play Type 1 2P. That's 4 rounds right there. Assuming we get started at 9am with round 1

9:00am-9:45am Round 1
9:50am-10:35am Round 2
10:40am-11:25am Round 3
11:30am-12:15 Round 4
Let's assume a 20 min lunch break and time for people to switch their decks to type 2. If there are more than 4 players that want to play type 2 then we have 3 rounds....
12:35-1:50 Round 1
1:55-2:05 Round 2
2:10-3:25 Round 3

And you haven't even boosted yet....See my concern?

Yeah, if T1 would be all morning, I wouldn't get there until after lunch. I'm 45 minutes away. I love you guys, but it's silly when I could be getting other stuff done. I think we're asking for efficiency; if there's time at the end we can hang out and stuffs.
Title: Re: Southern Pa/MD local

If T1 is all morning, I will still be there with my crew (they have little choice, I'm driving :D).

We'll be there at the start no matter what the schedule is, just would like to know the format ahead of time to prepare decks :)

We will run T1-2P and T2-2P at the same time this weekend to make it faster.

Also let me know If you'd prefer Booster to be before or after the 2P events. (For gameplay it is nice to run it after 2P but for anyone who will want some of the new cards in there deck for 2P we would need to run it first)

I'll speak for myself. I like running it after but speaking for some friends of mine that arn't on the fourm they will need the new cards.

Thanks.

I do understand that sentiment, I just don't know how much the random boosters and a couple of tins will do.  If the 2P are run at the same time, we could take more of a break between and let people try to add/build into what they have.  I think in this case, it's up to you.  I do see it played last usually, just what I've seen :)

For the record, I've already chosen my deck, so it makes no difference to me which way we go with. It is worth noting that Sam pulling out duplicates is currently the status quo, and I think we should be ruling by the status quo.

You just show up with your decks and your money for registration fees. There is no preregistering required. I will make sure to have plenty of stock available should anyone need anything. I'll also have many cards that I will be including free to those that purchase cards, if you are interested.

There is a McDonalds, Isaac's, Wendys, Subway, Pizza Hut, and other local restaurants within a mile radius of the church. I vote for we just chip in for some pizzas.

I may end up going for Subway over pizza, but don't take offense - I'm getting over mono and some foods give me pretty bad acid reflux, so it'll depend on how brave I am.

Also, I will not be there for Booster Draft. I just got back from watching The Hunger Games, and I have no desire to get six hours of sleep. My plan is to arrive around noon, give or take a half hour or so, depending on traffic and how soon I get everything together tomorrow. If I'm not there by 1, by all means start T12P, but before that I ask for grace and patience.

We hope to have many local, district, and even states at this location. Also I want to thank Marti and Brad for helping Jerome with the majority of the judging rules. Hope everyone had a great time and I can't wait to see you all at the next tournament (hopefully my voice won't be gone so I can't actually join in conversations) lol

Great tournament. Things were a little rough there getting started, but I'm sure that more experience will help iron out the wrinkles there. I had a lot of fun, I thought the venue was good, and the pizza was good. High fives all around!

If you arrived late, how do you know that things were "rough getting started"? haha We had a little issue with the game tracker software on the computer Jerome wanted to use (Macs do not work). Other than that I say we ran smoothly and if all goes well maybe we can host a few large venues at our location.

For those of you who were there, I want to thank all of you for being so welcoming and helpful to my brother in laws and I.  They were so excited to go to our first tourney.  Georgie was very exited, Marti, that you helped him cut his deck.  Thank you soooo much all of you!  Jerome hope to play you more in person soon since we're only an hour away from each other!!! Let me know when we can get together!!!! Thanks again to all of you!
