Title: Orlando Local
Post by: YourMathTeacher on November 28, 2009, 02:00:23 PM
OPEN LOCAL TOURNAMENT

Saturday, December 26th

Well, my new playgroup is eager to get the tournament season going here in Orlando. The Saturday after Christmas works best for us, but I was hopeful to maybe catch some of you on vacation during the holidays. I have not been able to secure a church for hosting so far, so this tournament will be held at my new home:

17332 Woodcrest Way
Clermont, FL  34714

I am right near the intersection of Route 192 and US 27, eight miles from Disney World. I also an air hockey table in my garage, and a Wii in the living room. You are welcome to swim in my unheated pool if you wish.

We will be starting at 9am, with deck checks beginning at 8am. The current category offerings will be:

Type 1 (2-player)
Type 1 (Multiplayer)
Traditional Booster Draft
(no tins)

The tournament will be free, with a $10 charge for Booster Draft only. As an added bonus, I will include Women's packs in the Draft. My new players only have Type 1 decks, so I have not scheduled Type 2 categories. Sorry.  :'(

This is Orlando, so there are many places to eat out. We can order pizza locally from Hungry Howie's. There is a Wendy's, McDonald's, KFC, and Taco Bell less than a mile from my house. If you are travelling far, overnight accomodations can be arranged. There are a plethora of hotels and vacation homes if you want privacy, but you are welcome to crash at my house if you don't mind a sleeper sofa, although the Guest Suite may be available. ;D

PM or post if you have any questions or just to let me know you are coming.

YAYS! A tournament near me! 15 mins away! I will try my darnedest to be there, in all my rustiness. Question, will TEXP be part of the BD?

YourMathTeacher,

Is this a sanctioned event? By the way since these tournaments are very early how late are your running tournaments? My brother and I are interesting in attending but we're about 3+ hours away. We would probably show up around 3 in the afternoon.

YAYS! A tournament near me! 15 mins away!

Dude, I live right behind the Winn-Dixie. I'm two miles from your house.  ;D

I will try my darnedest to be there, in all my rustiness.

Oh good, since you're "rusty" my new players might actually be able to rescue one lost soul from you.  ;)

Question, will TEXP be part of the BD?

TexP will not be part of the Booster Draft. This will be a traditional draft with Original, Prophets, Womens, Apostles, Patriarchs, Kings, Angel Wars, and Priests.

However, I have requested the "random TexP" for the tournament prizes.

Is this a sanctioned event?

Yes. I got the official OK from Rob.

I set the time early just to make sure that we have time to finish all categories. The amount of time needed will depend on the number of players in each category. Traditional Booster Draft takes a bit of time, especially with new players like mine. Depending on turnout, I could adjust the times if everyone who is coming is in agreement. I was thinking about starting with Type 1 Multiplayer, since that takes time and my players have been training mostly in multiplayer games since I can teach the whole group at once. Most veterans don't care for multiplayer anyway.  ;) We will also have to eat lunch and there is plenty of entertainment here, so if everyone that shows up is game, we should be able to hold off. However, I can't make any promises. Sometimes people just show up without notice.

Which categories are you most interested in? In a worst case scenario, if you were only able to play one category, what would it be?

Hi YourMathTeacher,

My brother and I (disciple_drew & delarosajon) would probably be showing up around 3:30 give or take traffic. We have other commitments concerning ministry & discipleship in the morning which explains showing up later than normal.

By the way, we're not that experienced in the game so we consider ourselves new to the game... we haven't even played a year and have yet to find a tournament. So this would be a great opportunitiy to learn on how to run some further south as well as increase our knowledge of the game. By the way, we're in our middle 20's so I hope that isn't a problem.

Another possiblity would be for us to schedule Type 1 2-player first. I expect to have a minimum of 6 players, so I will need four one-hour rounds. If we start at 9am, then we would likely not finish that category until 1:30pm. We could then take a lunch and video game/swim break until you arrive.

No. They will all be consecutive. This will be an all-day event.

YourMathTeacher,

I really appreciate what you're doing for the gamers. I hope there'll be more Type 1 - 2 player since I think that's all we'd do concerning time to play and then drive back home.

Much blessings,
Drew

If anyone else is thinking about coming to Orlando for Christmas, please email or PM me so I can make proper preparations. I only asked for 15 promos because I was not expecting the turnout that I've been hearing so far.

At this point I have 15 possible participants. I especially want to make sure I have enough packs for Booster Draft. So, if anyone else is even just thinking about coming, please let me know.

Looking forward to a great tournament! The pool heater dude is coming tomorrow to hopefully get it running smoothly. Make sure you bring your bathing suit! Hot tub in Florida the day after Christmas ftw!

Bad News!!!!!

The Pool Heater Dude said that we have a major leak and the whole heater system needs to be replaced.  :'(

You are welcome to still swim in the pool, but the water will be chilly.  :o

To clarify, dooku was saying it was cold in Florida, not that the tournament was today.  ;)

Realize that he is speaking relatively, since 50 degrees is probably not all that cold to the rest of you.

YourMathTeacher,

I don't think my brother and I are going to be able to make it now. To keep you in the loop. Sorry about that.

It would have been a long trip for you anyway. More tournaments are coming if you ever get the chance.

TexP have arrived! If players of the Booster Draft want to ante up the extra cost, I am willing to add TexP!  ;D

BTW, the current forecast for the tournament is cloudy with a high near 70 degrees.  ;D

TexP packs retail for $5. Take a peek at Cactus' website for more information about why they cost more than booster packs.

My price is so low that I am not allowed to advertise it publicly.  :o

Thanks!

Live update:

Type I Multiplayer is finished:

1st PLace: Kirk Dennison (ironic considering his signature)
2nd Place (tie): Josiah Weiss (placer by virtue of Lost Soul Count)
Grant Dennison (greatness runs in the family)

We are about to begin booster draft. With TexP and Womens, I checked in a bunch of very nasty decks!  :o

Booster Draft Results:

1st Place: Josh Kopp (the KarazyVP strikes again!)
2nd Place: Grant Dennison (turns out that Kirk has been tutored by his younger brother all these years  ;)  )

Type I 2-Player results:

1st Place: Kirk Dennison
2nd Place: Josh Kopp

In the end, the pros were too much for the new players to handle.  ;D
