Title: Official Nats MN Carpool Thread
Post by: BubbleBoy on April 05, 2010, 09:36:00 PM
We sort of hijacked my little brother's trading thread (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/index.php?topic=20552.0) with our schemes of starting a carpool from MN to nats this year, and so I decided to move that discussion here. If there is anything important in that thread that I fail to post here, please let me know.

Anyway, to summarize the progress we have made so far, we believe that we will be capable of taking a van (or two) with a capacity of 8 people (each) from SE MN to Lynnfield, MA for 2010 Nationals. Here's a Map of the first route given when I MapQuested St. Paul, MN to Lynnfield, MA:
(https://www.cactusforums.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi666.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv28%2Fbaconsnake2%2FCapture-3.jpg&hash=1cc5c9ed87538e62042dca127c24f60ff41ec91a)
A route similar to this will most likely be the one followed if this trip is carried through, but it can be adjusted to pick up a few hitchhikers along the way if anyone near this route is interested in hopping aboard. Including stops and everything, this trip should take an estimated 22 hours total from start to finish each way, to give a general frame of reference for time (which totals to 44 hours of driving time to get from MN to MA and back to MN). As for money questions, here is a little per capita master budget for reference:

Transportation Costs: $65 (about 2800 miles (including both directions) x about 20 miles per gallon x about $3 per gallon + about $20 for tolls / 8 people = a fraction of what would be paid for airfare)
   Lodging Costs: $55 (3 nights x about $70 a night / 4 people)
   Food Costs: $40 ($5 per meal x 2 meals per day x 4 days)
Tournament Costs: $70 ($25 tournamnet fee + $20 booster draft + $25 personalized card (this cost can vary greatly from player to player))
   Total Cost: $230

So in other words, if you are interested, prepare for about two straight days of driving and $300 in expenses for a high-quality Redemption experience. ;D

I am sure that I left a few things out here, so I plan to edit this thread over time. :)

from Austin, MN to Boston (wasn't sure where nats was being held, I'll redo the numbers.)
Straight route: 1,387 miles (22 hours) ($416 ($104 for 4, $82 for 5, $68 for 6, $60 for 7, $52 for 8)
Steubenville route 1: 1,473(24 hours, 15 minutes) ($440 ($110 for 4, $88 for 5, $71 for 6, $63 for 7, $55 for 8
Steubenville route 2: 1,486(24 hours, 45 minutes) ($445 ($111 for 4, $89 for 5, $74 for 6, $64 for 7, $56 for 8)
Steubenville route 1: 7 Partial, 4 Toll
Steubenville route 2: 3 Partial, 2 Toll
Straight Tolls: 5 Partial, 3 Toll

$3 for gas at a 20mpg rate.
I am able to drive. but my dad will only let me if a responsible adult (25ish) goes.
I pm'd Wanderer. definitely a long shot, but hopefully he'll get back to me soon.
mjware6 was also interested, hence why I included Steubenville routes.

As far as I can find anywhere, because I have had my license for three years (and its a non-provisional) I should be able to drive legally. However, It seems Andrew's father wouldn't be thrilled with that, so I probably can't either, we need two (ideally 3 drivers) and if Pat wants them to be 25+ then we're going to run into difficulties, that means him and scott, and bany maybe - but I don't know if Bany is going to fly - I can talk to him.

I wonder if we could get Bill or Matt or Justin (who is actually 24, but that's hopefully good enough for Ring Wraith's dad) or someone else on board with this...

And Ring Wraith, are those numbers calculated for both ways, or just one?

RDT: I thought that meant at least one adult to supervise us, and make sure we don't do anything stupid. We might want to clarify.... if we can find an adult to go with, I think we'll be good to go.

EDIT: BB, Bill is flying I believe. Hopefully Justin and Matt could help us, though....  ::) ::)

Bill is flying I believe.
I know he planned to fly, but maybe if he sees that so many awesome people are carpooling, he'll change his mind. ;)

you could drive, there just has to be an older person then you.
I'm pretty sure I could drive. I'll have had my license for over a year and a half by that point.

my dad would be fine with Justin...I'm still not a for sure though, I need to talk to my mom about it as well.

both ways. Lynnwhatever is a little bit further than Boston though, I think...

I just want to say that I am extremely excited about this. I have never been to Nats before, and I have never been on the road for more than 8 hours before, and it sounds like with all these amazing people it should be a heck of a fun 4-5 days if this works out! ;D

me too! I'm gonna start looking into hotels!
although, I've been to 4 nationals before (MN, NY, MO, and OH). I'm not sure it's more fun than the T2 only and State and Regions are, but it's definitely up there!

Well, nats can offer you fun opportunities which you simply cannot find anywhere else. When it comes to fun and fellowship, the T2 only, State, and Regional tournaments simply cannot be beat, but nationals is definitely worth attending as well. :)

true. but Regions has better down time between rounds. Nats is better over all.

Wanderer's response: "You do realize that I'm the only one who is married and has a full-time job?"
Hm, that's too bad...

By the way, since I will have to get down to Austin before we go anyway, I'll probably be able to take one of my parents' minivans to use for the trip, assuming we end up with 7 people or less, or we have so many people that we just can't fit them all in one vehicle.

Justin will be 25 during Nationals. But I believe he is currently planning to fly. You could certainly ask him though.

I still haven't been able to determine if I'll be going yet or not. I am still negotiating with my wife-to-be.

as far as Hotels go, the Marriot is $100 a night. it's also within a mile of the church.
so, if we have 6 people... (RDT, Sauce, myself, BB, mjware6, and an adult. Justin, Jordan, whoever.) the total cost would be:
$75 for Transportation
$100 for Hotel
$50 for Food
$75 for tournament fees
=$300
and that's being generous... I'll keep looking for a cheaper hotel...

what's the gas milage for your van?

Usually we get around 16-17. We drove it to Ohio for that Natz. It's also gone to Maryland with us before.

You enjoy it?! You're a tall guy, aren't you? The only way I can even stand flying is if I'm in the emergency exit row thingy, where there's actually room. :P

I also talked to Bill, and he said he just didn't have the time. But has anyone talked to Matt yet? I'd bet he would do it, or maybe Chris.

Yes, $300 per person should be enough to get us all there and back and pay for any expenses, unless you plan on buying a boatload of cards there.

Steubenville route 1: 7 Partial, 4 Toll
Steubenville route 2: 3 Partial, 2 Toll
Straight Tolls: 5 Partial, 3 Toll

mjware6 was also interested, hence why I included Steubenville routes.
Instead of going all the way down to Steubenville I can prably get dropped off in Youngstown Ohio. To cut the time off to about to 23hr. 23min.
Or I might be able to get dropped off in Akron.

would there be any chance we could crash in your backyard in a tent or something? a 2 day trip would be a lot easier, since we won't get much sleep during the tournament anyway. if not, I'd definitely say if you could be dropped off that'd be best.

If Im able to go most likely. that is a good idea so then then every one have the hotel cost. But If this does happen  and my mother lets me go with these "strangers" you would be more than welcome to stay in my 50 some acres of land.

If this is so, then an "adult" can pay for it with their card, and then we can pay them back. That should work out perfectly.

I don't understand why we wouldn't use the $70-per-night one advertised here (http://www.ggamestore.com/games/index.php?main_page=page&id=18&chapter=2)... Is there some catch to it?

To the TV question - Yes, our van has a TV, with dvd player, and if we're lucky I could maybe convince my family to let me borrow the Wii. In response to the hotel's credit card deal, yes most only accept credit cards, but I'm guessing our adult will have one, and if they don't I do.

Didn't see that hotel. That'd be a good one.

I just wanted to point that out, to make sure we're able to pay for the hotel ;). It shouldn't matter, beings interest is calculated on the portion of the bill you don't pay.

Well, now just hold up a second. Let's see just how many people are interested in this before we close up shop. I mean, if we have like at least ten people who want to get in on this, it would be quite possible to organize two vanfuls - it would be the same general prices for everyone, but we would give that many more people an opportunity to go to Nationals. I mean, I know how hard it is for people to get to Nationals with so little money, and I'm willing to give any help I can to make opportunities available to anyone I can. :)

true. if we could get 12 people, that'd be awesome. 10ish would allow us to take a couple vehicles with better gas milage. I like this idea.
so right now we have
RDT
Myself
BB
Sauce

and questionables
alpal
mjware
Justin
Jordan

if we could get Bany to come, and maybe we can pick up some more on the way, it'd be perfect.
just had a thought. Alan, do you think Blair would want to go? I know he works with his dad sometimes, so there's a good chance money isn't the problem. I'm almost confident he'd want to, the only question would be whether Jason would let him.

You forgot about MJB and JSB - either of them might want to come. I talked to Martin, too, and it's possible that he'll come, but it sounds like he's already planning for a plane ride, and he hasn't gotten back to me yet on the issue...

And, remember to talk to people at the district this Staurday. I mean, if there are people in Austin willing to come, that's the perfect location for them to start at. :)

ooooh, right. I had thought about them last night, but for some reason didn't think of them today.
as far as Austin goes, Belle (who will beat you if you come), Maddy, and Scott could all come. Zach, Blair and Jason could all come as well, but both families seem unlikely because they're families...

The mighty Rawrlolsauce is a stranger to noone!

I understand your parent's worry, especially when you're still a teen
yeah, I probably wouldn't let my kids go with a bunch of strangers. if I had kids.
of course, now that I've been to nationals, I'd be willing to let them ride with pretty much anybody I met there. except for Sauce, because he's a n00b.

I can just play SOG on the shuffler to shuffle your parents. As long as your opponent doesn't have Harvest Time, they won't be back for atleast 3 days.

Ring Wraith can't do that though, beings he isn't a n00b.

RDT.... you and I could ditch BubbleBoy after about 100 miles (after taking his gas money) and we could take 6-12 hour shifts of driving.... that'd work....

Taking a break might be best. If its only three, we should take a vehicle with better gas mileage though.

Well, I think if we get something definitely established, and if we decide to take a halfway rest stop, people might start to be more attracted to the idea of coming with us, and we can modify our acommodations accordingly, so let's start there.

I just thought of something: I would be willing to sacrifice my national promos to an adult/driver if it would make the difference between them coming and not coming. If we get Prof on board, that will make 5 people and two drivers, which is a nice number for starters.

Oh, RW can drive, can't he? That could make a significant difference, yes.

I also just realized that by August 11, I will have had my license for over 6 months, which I just looked up means that I can drive with up to three passengers under the age of 20, a number that happens to work perfectly. That would make 4 drivers! 6 hours per driver makes for a much smoother trip, especially if we alternate at every stop.

MEGA BUS! MEGA BUS! MEGA BUS!

except mega bus doesn't go there. I'll google it.

Mega bus IS in Boston, and it IS in Minneapolis, but it does not have any combination of buses going from Boston to Minneapolis. I tried every link possible. there's a Chicago one and a New York one. the two circuts never intersect.

Okay, so MJB just looked up Greyhound, and it turns out that they have a route going directly from Minneapolis to Boston. It would be $184 per person for a round trip and it would take 34 hours each way. Here are a few of the pros and cons:

Pros of Greyhound
Free Wi-Fi and power outlets
More comfortable (or at least more spacious and less sweaty)
No one has to drive
MJB, JSB, and possibly a few others will be able to come

Cons of Greyhound
About $100 more expensive per person
About 10 hours more driving time

I'm not sure whether meals are offered on the Greyhound, but if so add that to the pros.

I don't want anyone to get left behind that could have come on the carpool, so I hope that this option will be viable for everyone.

sorry Bill, but $100 cheaper wins. I'd do this. and spaciousness is good. of course, Carpool still wins. EmJayBee could still go on the bus...but if an Adult (i.e. Scott or Jordan) can't go, this is my first option.

Yeah, if an adult can't go, then the whole carpool thing pretty much just breaks down to nothing.
just for me.
Well if an adult doesn't come, then you don't come, and then that makes only 3 people, which is just not enough.
true...true...unless you get a couple other kids to go.

For anybody interested, right now you can buy round trip plane tickets for Minneapolis to/from Boston for $238 at AirTran. These leave Wednesday and return Sunday. I think this is the best price you are going to get on airfare.

this might require us getting a hotel for another night. but that price is looking really good. it's only $80ish more.

I'm starting to think that the Greyhound is the best way to go. with Wi-Fi access, we could watch movies from Netflix the whoooole way. or steal them off the internet.

Two days with nothing to do but watch movies and mess around on the internet. How will we pass the time? ;)

I wouldn't mind Greyhound. Although, I'm not sure if I'll be able to go or not now, due to some scheduling changes around that time.

Come with us on the airplane ! You could buy one seat and split it 7 or 8 ways and all you have to do is 1) Dress indentically 2) put one person in the seat 3) Shove the others in the bathroom and work out rotations from there!

Be sure to have your hair identical too and please don't try to have someone younger to order the plane ticket I've seen how begging doesn't work

I have to announce now that I will definitely NOT be going to nationals this year due to conflicting schedules with a missions trip I have just been officially accepted on. I hope this doesn't ruin anyone's plans. I will continue to keep this thread up unless someone wants to start a new one. Sorry...

I believe RDT has purchased a plane ticket. I'm thinking I'm going to have to go that way too, but will wait to see what Sauce wants.

Like I said earlier, I probably can't go. If I can, I'll probably be flying beings it saves like 20 hours for only ~$100 more.
