Title: New York State Tournament for 2011!!! (Now with results on pg. 4)
Post by: soul seeker on March 22, 2011, 03:21:23 PM
I am preparing to host the NY State Tournament!  (Central NY cannot and Roy is being gracious to allow me.)
This is an easy (relatively speaking for state tournament) drive for PA and OH!  Please give me input on the dates.  I am looking at the following dates to hold the tournaments.  I want a lot of people to come!  If you respond quickly then my early date can work out!

Earliest possible date:  May 6/7, 2011
Next best:   May 20/21, 2011
Not great but I will work with it date:  June 3/4, 2011

Also, suggest categories (outside the normal 4) that you would like to see and I will know what to stock up on.

Finally, much of the information in the original post is STILL ACCURATE.  Yes, I believe I can give you free room and board.  I will check with the church Trustees soon after I confirm the dates to let you guys know for sure.  Please, reply quickly!!!!!!!!

EDIT:  Update on everything a few posts below.

I'll try and gather as many of the Raiders as I can.  That early date might work best, as we'll all still be at Roberts (it's at the end of finals week.)  I'll talk to my group and get back to you.

How many hours is it up to your place from cinci?
From memory: 2 to 3 stops (eat in car), light traffic (especially in Columbus), averaging 5 over the limit: 7 1/2 hours.  I can ask Laurie to be sure, but I'm confident that estimation is right.  I think the fastest I ever made it was 7 hours with one stop, but that was when I was younger (read: still in 20s & no kids).

Those dates are all good for me !    The only weekend I can't make would have been May 13/14 !

New York State Tournament is tentatively (paperwork is in and waiting on confirmation) on May 6/7, 2011.  Please come out and make this awesome event.
There will be 6 categories:  Type 1 (2p & Multi), Type 2 (2p & Multi), Booster, Teams.
Also, if you know of any kids under 12, then I am supplying prizes for Type A.  It is not official, but I hope to encourager younger members to come play Redemption.

Lodging is free.  The plan is to have guys stay at the church and girls at my house (beside church).
Food if it is not free will be cheap.
Entertainment is free.  (Besides Redemption: A gym, board games, and Wii will be offered.)

Friday evening will start late enough for those traveling!!!
Deck check-in is 7 PM and games will not be until 8 PM.  I want everyone to arrive on time and safely, so I have made the times as late as possible to start.
Saturday will be late enough to "sleep" in.
Deck check-in will begin at 9 AM.

I want people to have a good time as affordable as possible!  I will seek to make it worth your while to travel to my tournament.  I hope to see you here!

One last request, please  :prayer: please tell me if you plan to play Booster, so that I can begin to get stock for it.  I need an accurate count.  If you have any questions or concerns, then post them here and I will address them.

You do know that May is not a summer month don't you.   ;)

Seriously, I would love to have you, and for your info...
If you live near the church of last year's PA states then it is approximately a 4 hour drive (which I don't consider too bad).

saw this and had to say, "In new york, concrete jungle dreams are made from, there's nothing you can't do, and now you're in new york, new york, new yo-ork"  - Empire state of mind by Jay-Z (Ft. Alicia Keys)  8)

Just so you know...we are NOTHING like the city.  I'm on the Western side of the state amongst the hills .  My wife, native to the area, is annoyed that this side of the state gets confused with the City all the time.  There are miles upon miles (approx 48,500 sq. miles in fact) of New York that are OUTSIDE of the city border.

As a Southerner, I hate that song.  I love Roy and his crew, but we are about as country as you can get.

I've been to the city once.  I went there on a mission trip last year.

Are you asking if you can cross the state or the city in 2-3 hours?

The state:  Absolutely not, last year it took me at least 5 hours just to make it to the West side of the city, and I'm not even in the Western most part (which is near Erie, PA) of the state.

The City:  I don't know.  I was told not to drive in the city if I could avoid it.  So on the mission trip, we stayed in NJ and bussed into the city's hub and took subways everywhere.

you're right...this is the first time with a Redemption tournament to deal with, but I'm cool with it.

As for the outnumbering, look on the bright side....you should be treated like a princess.   :)

2 things:
         1.  When "crossing" states, you would really have to specify where you are crossing.  I've crossed VA in 45 minutes, but it was at the thinnest part too.
         2.  As for size comparison, I looked it up and you may be interested that New York is considerably larger than Virginia.
NY= 54,475 sq. mi. (24th largest state in union)    VA= 42, 769 sq. mi.  (35th largest state in union)
this info was found at www.wisegeek.com/how-big-are-the-states-in-america.htm

Also, for general information to the Redemption public...Texas is not the biggest state in the union.   ;)

True, but I still found it funny.

I like to save Texas for jokes involving absurd size. Since nothing really happens in South Carolina, they are a good state to waste on jokes about bloody wars (while maintaining biblical historical accuracy too!)

Yay!  Bad news: I won't be bringing as many people as I had hoped.  Still trying, but it looks like four.

noooooooooooooooooooooo....fine....I'll deal with it.  Rob is going to think I'm a liar though (I guessed at 20 attendees, your group being half).   :P

Now for the schedule (though a little later than promised):
    * I plan to keep the pairings unless the number of people is small to run "back-to-back."

Friday night:    7- 8 PM Deck check-in
                     8 PM   TEAMS                      8 PM T2 Multi

Sat. Morning:   9 - 10 AM Deck check-in (and breakfast provided)
                     10 AM  T2 2P                    10 AM Booster Draft
                     2 PM    T1 2P
                     7 PM    T1 Multi

* I am flexible with this schedule, so I can let the players decide the day of what they would like to do.
However, my reasoning is that Friday night is typically the lowest attended night, so I scheduled 2 unpopular categories.
Saturday morning has booster first, so that people can put cool cards in their deck for the afternoon T1 2P category.

I hope to see you guys here!

Can we run T1 multi against Booster instead of t2? :) If I am able to come (which, odds are improving that I will be able to get there for at least Saturday, hopefully all of it) I would really love to play t2 and booster. Begging done.

Are you giving me the wrong dates to keep me from coming.  ;)    NE Regionals is on Memorial Day (May 27-28).  My tournament is this Friday.  :)

@ Randall, I really need T1 to stay at 2 PM because my son has a ball game that morning and he is REALLY EXCITED to play in his first Redemption tournament.  I can switch T1 Multi with Booster if the crowd would prefer.

I am just curious but is there any way to switch T2 Multi to the last thing? Because unless someone in my car plays that, we are doing my dad's birthday that night and I was kinda hoping to make it for part of it, but I understand if it is too late to switch..

We will just be coming saturday, and will hopefully stay for the first two events that day, maybe the last if she is still a happy baby by then.

God Bless,

Laurie will be in and out on Saturday because my two sons have two games at two different times.  I thought about putting games near our nursery depending on how mobile your daughter is.  I have been trying to line up baby sitting on Saturday and I have had my TOP 5 babysitters not be able to watch.  I will keep looking for both of us.

What once was shaping up to be a big tournament dwindled to a mild one (people did have good reasons though).

We had 9 in attendance including my son's debut.
There were only 6 of us the first night, so we ran TEAMS and T2 Multi back to back.
3 Teams had 3 different strategies. We were able to play round robin to determine ranking order.
1. Luke and Al
2. Jonathan and Aaron
3. Randall and Alec

T2 Multi-player:       This event had four players battle for 3 spots.  As it turns out everyone placed because of ties.
1. Jonathan
2. Aaron
3. Alec & Luke

The next morning matched Booster draft against T2 2 player.
Booster:
1. Alec
2. Al
3. Luke

T2 2 Player:       This was a rematch of an earlier District up at Roberts Wesleyan
1. Jonathan
2. Rob
3. Aaron

That afternoon T1 2Player matched off against T1 Multi. My son was excited to join after his baseball game.  He didn't place, but he had a great time and a good learning experience. Anyway results of the final categories...
T1 2 Player:
1. Jonathan
2. Aaron
3. Luke

T1 Multi:
1. Randall
2. Rob
3. Al and Alec

I hope those who did make it had a great time.

That T1 game, when I forgot about Lampstand taught me a valuable lesson in paying attention to artifact maintenance even against a new player.  I will never forget that mistake.  Unfortunately, it's easy to beat me in multiplayer because I am ganged up on consistently.
