Title: MASK* Players please report immediately!
Post by: SoulSaver on August 11, 2008, 11:53:09 AM
What happened to you guys? :P Come on, all three players to place at nationals in type 1, multi not only were playing speed, but were also from the southeast.  :-*

MASK player reporting in. I was unable to attend Natz '08 with my Speed stopping Heroless, but there is always next year. You will be assimilated, resistance is futile.

I thought all the people interested in having fun were playing Booster Draft anyways. ;) If I remember, there were 96 drafters.

that sounds right, alongside what, 28 T1 multi players? Of all the drafts to miss, this would not be the one I'd pick. I didn't actually have a good draft, but I still had fun.

There were only 20 in T1-MP at the start.  They were down to 18 by the end.  I was told that one player left to go pout in their room without even reporting that they chose to drop.  I don't know what happened to the other person.

hey,

The other had to leave to catch a flight to California.

Wow, isn't it a little early to catch a flight to California Natz '09 when it has not been officially announced yet?

Actually, he went upstairs to our room to grab something. Ended up literally passing out on the bed, was pretty funny actually. I guess 6 hours of sleep in a 3 day period can really get to ya.

Daniel, you're lucky Chad jumped in the pool with his phone. Or else there would be a very interesting video starring Daniel Whitten and 6 mexican restaraunt waiters all singing Happy Birthday. But they're really saying... "Congrats on winning T1 Multi!"

Thanks Brian and Ben, it was guys like you that made nationals worth coming to, not winning some stupid trophy that will collect dust over the years. I love getting to spend quality time with quality guys, I love you guys! ;) :-*

Not sure how I missed this thread, but it would be unfair if I didn't at least show up here an eat a little bit of the humble pie that I deserve.

There's really no good way to say this.  MASK failed.

I had thought that I could get enough people putting anti-speed cards in their decks to slow them down and keep them from dominating T1-mp.  Over the course of the year, there were many people who joined our group.  I also personally play in the extended OH region, and beat up on some people using a speed deck early in the year to convince them of how overwhelming speed can be.  I thought that with those two groups combined that we would have plenty of firepower.  However, it turned out that virtually none of the MASK members could either make it to Nats, or chose to play RoA draft instead.

I take some solace in the fact that in the games that I was personally in, no speed decks were particularly speedy.  However, I wasn't at the top tables where the speed decks predominantly were.  The top 3 finishes were indeed speed decks (although Steve Kampke's was an atypical variety).  RoA has now added a ton of cards that will severely punish typical speed decks, but the question is whether anyone will use them next year in T1-mp.

The other question is what should I do next year.  I love the format of T1-mp, and I have really enjoyed many games in that event.  However, I am really tired of seeing the same speed stuff every year at Nats, and with the failure of MASK, I don't know whether to expect anything different in the future.  Maybe it's time for me to switch to Booster like everyone else?

we, redemption players in MN, (RPM), have a plan for next year, but it cannot be released just yet.

and no, it has NOTHING to do with orange defences... nothing at all

I can't say I am sorry about drafting RoA. Maybe next year I'll play with my mystery deck, codenamed Behemoth.

Prof Underwood,

Yeah, it's still going to be pretty much the same crap this year all over again, maybe even worse, but I'm not going to allow speed to dominate like all the other years. I want players like you to help me stop this madness now while we still have type 1 multi as an event. I have quite a few ideas how to combat "speed", you actually had a really good idea going with mask. It can work if the good players change their arch type, then the other players will fallow. It's just going to take some talented players like yourself to come up with a deck that's fresh and that wins on a consistent basis at high level tournaments. It's time for a new page to turn in the type 1 multi saga. Please don't ever quit this wonderful category, it's people like you that make this category fresh, lets keep it that way from now on. Can I count on you to come along with me on this difficult quest and turn type 1 multi into a category that people will actually want to play again? I know it's going to be anything but easy, but what must be done must be done.

Daniel

I love who posted that XD. Yall should bring side battle based decks for defenses/offense. That might actualy be able to stop them. Yeah, not the best idea but I try to stay away from speed decks.

This sounds so much like what I was saying a year ago.  However, in spite of all my efforts, the idea failed.  Yourself (and your fan club) all came with their speed decks and the plan for how you could be the champion.  Your plan just happened to work better than mine :)  I'm not upset.  Quite to the contrary, I applaud your success.  I'm just not sure that I want to invest another year into trying to save a category that I love when it seems like no one else out there really cares.

Well, it's as you said, Mark, so many people got sucked into roaster draft that there really wasn't anyone in T1 multi to counter the speed freaks.

I found out a good way to counter speed. Play sites in Multi. I have tried it twice in tournaments with pretty good success. Most type one multi players don't have any site access or just Dragon Raid. You can sort of control who has access to your lost souls. And if two players at a table have sites look out.

Just food for thought.

Me personally (and I think Daniel, also) play with New Jerusalem and Promised Land for site access. But I can see how sites could mess Speed up if for some reason they couldn't draw NJ or PL.

Hehe, I dropped out of T1 multi at the last minute to play RoAster draft, worked out... pretty well until the last game.  :-\

In my deck I include a number of ways to take out site access. So you could possibly take out site access of the player that is ahead or that you fear the most.

What was the reimbursement?
Title: Re: MASK* Players please report immediately!
Post by: EmJayBee83 on February 09, 2009, 06:56:45 PM
What was the reimbursement?

Cactus used to give $75 in lieu of prizes to the players who finished first in any event at Regionals, to help pay for Nationals.

Sadly, SirNobody is correct. Rob was forced by the current economic situation to cancel the reimbursement policy (although a generous regionals host or two might perpetuate it).

also, there's no MASK to discuss there... and MASK failed last time, because they all played booster... and with nats in west minnesota, there isn't going to be alot of people playing t1 multi anyway... and certainly none of them, or not enough of, will be playing t1 multi.
