Title: Iowa State Redemption Tournament
Post by: Gabe on May 23, 2019, 09:23:18 PM
We're hosting the Iowa State Redemption tournament on Monday, May 27th, Memorial Day. Come join us!

The tournament is held at Grace Community Church - 2707 Dubuque ST NE just outside of North Liberty. If you've joined us before, this is the same place we usually hold tournaments and where Nationals 2017 was held. We will be in the far east end of the building this time.

Morning events begin at 8AM. Since we're only doing 1 day (no events are being held Sunday night) we want to get an early start to leave us plenty of time to play!

Entry into the tournament is $5.

We're playing T1-2P and T2-2P in the morning. The number of rounds will depend on how many participants we have.

We will break for lunch. Our plan is to offer walking tacos, drinks and dessert for $5 per person.

In the afternoon we will T1-MP, Teams and Booster draft (multi-player). Booster draft will cost $15 and we are using CoW, RoJ, FoM and PoC II.

If you are traveling and want a place to stay Sunday night please PM me to make arrangements.

We plan to host NC Regionals here on July 6th (application pending) so please plan to join us then too!

No, not sarcasm...I was going more for the thumbs up. In five rounds I only played against two decks that were remotely similar, and I observed lots of other deck types.

Some of the decks that were used:
White/Persians (this was the deck I saw two of)
Prophets/Assyrians
Prophets-Judges/Animals
Red Warriors/Magicians
Angels/Demons
Job offense/defense
Flood Survivors/Egyptians
Angels/Babylonians
Clay/Pale Green? (I had such a great draw, I didn't get to see much of this defense)
Ruth/Romans

Plenty of others that I didn't get a chance to see, but really awesome to see all the different strategies being used. There may have been one that I just missed, but I didn't see a single Throne deck  :o

For booster, I took 2nd. Josh was 3rd

Thank you, corrected.  8)

I am guessing John E. judged and did not play?

John did play T1, but did not place this year...it was most certainly a tough field.

There was also a Judges/Greek deck I played against, as well as a splash genesis/Egyptian deck I saw.

I also didn't see any throne decks either. My main take away is that Egyptians are super scary now!

Indeed. I lost a super tight game to Kye, 5-4, both of us were decked out and forced to use everything we had. After that my day went downhill quickly

Super tight is no exaggeration. Quite possibly the tightest game I have ever experienced in terms of who could have/should have won.

IMO, John had the upper hand most of the game. Toward the end of game, I pulled off a Mourn and Weep during battle, and was able to draw FA (Wo) in a desperate attempt to stay alive, and got to it.  Without either of those pieces, John wins.

Thanks for posting results, Justin. As the judge I got to see all the decks and was also pleased by the variety! There were a LOT of highly competitive decks being played!

While the Throne of David wasn't played I did see at least a couple people using the AuTo>Sam>Saul>Abby>David engine that is the real strength of the TToD offense. Even in John's #Mayhem last year TToD was often just a "decay" to draw 3W or another drawing card and could have been cut if a better card presented itself.

I was most surprised by the variety of defenses at the top tables. There are two that stood out to me because I didn't expect them to be as good as they are.

  • There was also a pale green offense that was "outside the box" and extremely effective.

Wow, that is progressive  ;)

It was a Green offense with a splash of White...thus making it a pale shade of green... ::)

Could we get a basic breakdown of what won in both 2player categories? Also, what was seen in T2? And Justin, what made you choose T1 over T2 at this state?

T1 2P

1st White/Persians (Kye)
2nd Red Warriors/Magicians (myself)
3rd Prophets/Pale Green (Josh)

T2 2P

Jayden used the same deck (http://www.cactusforums.com/other-tournament-winners/type-2-only-2019-2-player-first-place/) he played at the T2 Only, but updated with PoC Phase 2 cards.

Perhaps Jayden can share a bit about the decks the other two T2 players used.

If I'm able to attend multiple state tournaments in the same year, I usually play T1 at one and T2 at the other. I'll likely play T2 at MN state.  8)

T2-2P

1st - Deck linked in above comment with some PoC P2 stuff.
2nd - Clay (Peter/Acts mostly)/Gray (I think mostly Romans and some Sabbath Breakers)
3rd - Prophets/Angels/Babylonians

Not much to determine a "meta" since it was just the three of us. If I had had time to put it together I probably would've played a White/Brown deck of some sort.
