Title: Florida Players!!!
Post by: YourMathTeacher on May 09, 2010, 02:48:27 PM
We need to brainstorm a date for FL States. The weekend of June 12th works best for me, since that is right after Final Exams for my students.

As of right now, since money and supplies are limited, I was thinking of doing all five of the open deck categories and none of the closed deck categories. So, we would have Type 1 2-player and multiplayer, Type 2 2-player and multiplayer, and Teams. If someone else has access to enough supplies to do either Sealed Deck or Booster Draft, then please let me know immediately. Otherwise, a $5 cover charge for all players should cover the tournament cost.

Please post or PM any questions or suggestions. We need to make a decision quickly, though.

Hey Man, where in Florida would this be?  If it isn't too far from TN I might be able to come! (If I came I could possibly bring some closed/booster stuff)

I didn't really know where YMT was located.  If he was in North FL, I'd be able to possibly come!

Orlando could be a possibility for the Knoxville group. Allegiant Air has really cheap flights from Knoxville to Orlando.

Well, if you guys are going to do that, then we should make it a two-day event. Should we do Friday night and Saturday, or Saturday and Sunday? I will be working until early afternoon on Friday.

FYI, my house can sleep quite a few people, if anyone needs a place to crash.

Is this going to be a sanctioned tournament and is so what type?

Nice! Yeah I'm sure I'd bring 3 from south FL. Is it going to be at your house again Tim?

I'd prefer Fri/Sat. That also allows board games after the first day's categories finish which is always a blast.

Yes. The churches around here continue to be stubborn. That's the only reason I had put it off this long. However, Rob said that my house is fine. As you saw, we can fit a lot of people at my house.

We would probably need a place to spend the night, unless of course someone else is coming from a further distance and needs it. What would the tournament schedule look like if you have an idea?

YMT, would local players be able to sleep in the living room?

Jon, I do not have a schedule yet. Right now I just want to get the application in asap. We can work together later to come up with the best schedule.

Regarding sleeping arrangements, we have the one guest room that has a bathroom, a queen bed, double bed, and room on the floor for two sleeping bags. My son and daughter can sleep in my room that night, to free up their bedrooms. My son's room has a bunk bed with a queen on the bottom and double on top. My daughter's room has a double bed, and room on the floor for two sleeping bags. The living room has a queen sleeper sofa, and room for someone to sleep on the extension. There would also be room for several sleeping bags on the floor. I also have a screened patio that has several lounge chairs you could sleep on. If need be, you could bring a tent and sleep in the back yard.

Is it legal to do only the open categories and none of the closed ones, at a state tournament?

The new rules say that you must offer at least 5 categories and that Type 1 2-player and Type 2 2-player must be included. That's the way I read the new host instructions. If I am wrong, please let me know!

Well the arms you can't. I'd drop my cards, making it an illegal reveal and you'd be banned from hosting. Guess my legs would work...

Well, unless there are any stern objections (speak now or forever hold your peace), I am going to send in an application for June 11th & 12th (Friday & Saturday).

I hate to be the one to object, but my brother and I work Friday and then after work we both have fellowship for two hours after that. There's no way we would be able to make it on time with our drive. If it had to come down to that for the majority, well I hope Friday night would be the type 2 formats. Otherwise, Saturday would be better for us. Either way, Tim, I do appreciate you taking the time to organize this.

By the way, my brother and I have been talking about co-hosting a district in South FL. Would anyone in FL be interested in attending? If so how could we accomadate you? We're in northern Broward county and we're about 3 1/2 hours south of Orlando.

I will definitely go to states... I'm with Jon and Drew's crew in SoFL, although, depending on the schedule of game play, I might come up on Friday by myself or something...  If necessary, I believe a one-way ticket to Orlando from WPBIA is about $99 which is about how much I would pay in gas and lodging  :D. (That means I would ride back with Jon and Drew, not stay at your house for the rest of my life, Tim  ;) )

Did you include money to eat? The Harmons were great hosts last time we visited but I don't know if they'll keep up the freebies. I wouldn't want to be rude and sponge off them.

By the way if Tim is reading this, I want to let you know I'll be doing some tournament coverage for the State Championship. With the data gathered I plan on producing another webzine, videos, interviews, and so on.

We're gonna hit Orlando like 1 of those plagues from exodus! lol

Lodging is free, but food costs extra.   ;)

I would ask that y'all plan on bringing money for food throughout the weekend. That was one of the reasons I am just charging a flat $5 cover charge (which will allow you to enter all five categories).

Hungry Howie's has large cheese or pepperoni pizzas for $6 each. If you guys split the cost, you can eat cheap. There's also the Dollar Menu at McD's, Wendy's, Taco Bell, or KFC.

In my estimates I was including food w/ lodging, but alas, I will be unable to fly... I'll conform to Jon and Andrews' schedule and however they work it out :D  You and your family were wonderful hosts when I was there, so any way to make this easier is fine by me :P. $5 + food to attend states (And share the gas costs of course  ;) is a wonderful deal!!
