I am looking into the possibility of replacing Closed deck with booster draft for the MO State. The feedback I have received suggests that this would be much more popular with my players, and I believe I still have time to get the needed materials from Cactus.
What I can't find is where TeP or Disciples fit into the mix. Rob told me last month that for Closed Deck, a TeP or Disciples pack would count as TWO booster packs (thus, each player gets one starter deck, 1 TeP or Disciples, and 1 "regular" booster pack). The Tournament Guide is silent on using TeP or Disciples for booster draft, and I can find no mention in the REG. Anyone know how this works?

Hey Kory, glad to see you back man! God willing, we'll be able to catch up in Nationals since I haven't seen you since I believe it was 2003 with Rob at the Florida State Tournament after CBA if I remember correctly...How you do booster is entirely up to you. Some people still use Rock of Ages and Faith of Our Fathers tins and then toss in other packs depending on cost. Our group for state and regionals go with Unlimited, Prophets, Kings, Angel Wars, Priests, TeP and then Disciples. This throws out Patriarchs and Apostles but we justify that with the high amount of rares/UR that players have to choose from in addition to the new cards. For us, the cost was 17.00 and we were able to make ends meet. Every once in a while as we have stock Women's is tossed in as well. There is no set requirement of booster packs, I believe outside of the 5 or 6 that would normally come from a tin. Hope that helps!

I just spoke to Rob and he basically said that the packs offered are totally up to the discretion of the host. So let me rephrase my question: What combinations of packs have other hosts found to work for them? Any players with preferences for what they like to see available?
-
One more note: Rob said it is up to the discretion of the host so long as the total number of cards offered is equal to (ballpark) the normal 6 regular booster packs.
-
I've seen Di more than TxP just because it's newer.

If you're drafting Tins then you're basically using 7 packs (6 plus the 10 cards from the tin). I prefer classic draft to tin draft. Tin draft is a nice way to get the tin card if you need them though. These are the two configurations I commonly see at tournaments in the NC.
Tin Draft
Limited/Unlimited 8
Prophets 8
Apostles 10
Patriarchs 10
Kings 10
Priests 10
Tins 10
Angel Wars 10 (occasionally added but not usually)
Total card count = 66-76 cards
Classic Draft
Limited/Unlimited 8
Prophets 8
Apostles 10
Patriarchs 10
Kings 10
Priests 10
Tep or Disciples 15 (sometimes both are used)
Total card count = 71-86
If the host has Womens packs available and the players are willing to pay the extra to add them I really love to add those to a classic draft. The cards in that set are great for draft decks! That could add another 8 cards to the total count.
At NC Regionals we ran classic draft with Tep, Disciples and Women.

At EC Regionals, I'm planning on doing classic draft with TeP and Angel Wars for $15

Ken4Christ was running a deal last year where he would trade tin packs straight up for Womens. This worked out really well last year (2010) at the NC Regionals.
If you are doing classic booster the two best additions you can make (not including Warriors) playwise are 1) Women and 2) Angel Wars (in that order). Those two sets both up the strategy level in booster quite a bit.

Adding Women (and Angel Wars to a lesser extent) packs definitely ups the ante on sites for defense. And of course Falling Away.

Still willing to do that deal for anyone who is interested. :)

I can't right now, but I'd be willing to take you up on that later this summer!

Sounds good!
