What has been your worst pairing ever at a tournament? I mean, who were your opponents, that you said I have no chance at winning!
Mine was at the Ohio Regionals, 2010. I played in type 2, and the first Game I played had theese people~
BrianGabe
Captain Kirk
Robm
It was fun seeing the stratigie of experienced players... but seriously! How could I have one in that game! Especially when It was my first time playing type 2! At least I had fun! :)
-
Kansas City Nationals. last round T2 Multi. Eric Largent, Tyler Stevens, Justin Alstad.
-
2009 Type-2 Only. My first type 2 game of all time: SirNobody
2010 Type-2 Only. My first opponent: Captain Kirk
2009 NC Regionals. My only 3 losses were from SirNobody, BrianGabe, and CdBany. All of those were really close games I could have won if I played better, especially against BrianGabe.
Every other tournament: That Ring Wraith guy.
-
I don't know that I would call this my "worst" pairing, but certainly the most ironic:
My first ever tournament (as a participant) of any kind was in late 2006 at a local on Long Island, NY, run by Roy Cruz at his Walsh Conley store. My first ever tournament category was Sealed Deck, and my first round opponent was that summer's Sealed Deck National Champion Claude Fong.
FWIW, I won 5-4, with my final rescue made by a converted Pharaoh using a multicolor enhancement. I ended up losing 4-5 in the last round to Super Smash Brothers Brawl Champion Reggie Flores (CatintheHat).

Top table?

Nats '10: First round T1: Roy Cruz. Last round: some prideful speeddecker who wants me to tell everyone how good he is.
-
Gabe, ReyZen, Rob Anderson. But then, after Gabe won 2 events already, they all teamed up on Gabe and I won.
Or maybe Gabe and his teams partner (why can't I remember his name!?!?) We lost, 5-1. ;D

It could be Sealed Deck 1st round at Nationals in Pittsburgh when I played Rob Anderson and he cheated. Then cleaned my clock.
At our locals, we often have players like Roy Cruz, Justin Sangillo, Nick Archick, Claude Fong, Reggie Flores...I have to run separate events for newbies to keep them from crawling away from the game. Our T1s are usually so good that I gave up on playing T1 regularly and focused on Booster Draft. (And I will proudly for the rest of my Redemption career have the knowledge that for three weeks I was #1 in RNRS points in BD. I promise it will never happen again.)

Getting the person you play against the most in round one (or someone in your playgroup).
-
This past weekend, Districts tournament. Gabe was visiting with his Disciples deck. He ended up sweeping all 4 events, lol.
-
A couple of years back, my friend and I went down south to a state or regional tournament (don't remember). We randomly drew numbers out of a hat and ended up facing each other. The worse part was that the deck my friend was using was actually one of my own decks (I was evening telling him what he should have done while we where playing :p)
-
When I went out to Pittsburgh for Nationals, I gave Justin Sangillo a ride. We arrived late, so random pairings were made of those who missed an earlier round. Justin drew...my son Robert, who had played him many times at local tournaments.
My best story like that is this year's Nationals Booster Draft, where I played one of my sons in the first round and my daughter in the second. And my daughter (11) won the second round game, crushing my hopes of a top-3 RNRS finish. (Yes, I finished 4th in RNRS.)

Isn't it the pride of fathers to have their own kids get good enough to beat them :p

Kansas City Nationals. last round T2 Multi. Eric Largent, Tyler Stevens, Justin Alstad.
Top table?
nope. second to top. Nathan Voigt, James Roepke (who was actually in 12th or something), and a couple other guys (I think one was canadian...). it was a crazy battle...
-
Kansas City Nationals. last round T2 Multi. Eric Largent, Tyler Stevens, Justin Alstad.
That was an epic game. At NY Nats 06, I had a couple of epic T2 MP games...for one round, it was me, Redemption Rocks, Tyler S and Will Tartak. Later in that same tournament I faced Eric Largent, Kevin Shride and Chris McCravy.
For 2P, my worst pairing ever was Kevin Shride in Round 1 of T2 2P at MN Nats 05. I had a great combo deck (back before the days of Speed Camp combo decks) but unfortunately for me, Kevin Shride had recently faced Ron Sias at Regionals where Ron used a combo deck similar in concept to mine. Right as I had everything I needed to unleash my combo, Kevin uses AotL on his own blocker to give me a LS but prevented me from locking him out for the rest of the game, which he went on to win. :P
-
the midwest regionals...i did place second tho
Ron Sias
Gabe Isbell
Jonathan Greeson
(person i cant remember)
I beat all these ppl but then when it was for first place i went up against MY DAD...and lost
-
My first Type 2 game at any Nationals was in '02 against Chris Bany. I was able to beat him and that was his only loss, so he ended up 2nd and I was 3rd (bryon was 1st with his Elders that year).
Along with the game Justin said, in 2007, T2 MP had the second to top table as myself, Justin Alstad, Tyler Stevens, and Andrew Wester. I was able to pull out a win which put me in 3rd place that year.
I know I've had other "monster" tables in T2 MP, but I can't really remember any of them (thanx to Bany for putting the spreadsheets he does have on his website).

At NC Regionals this past summer, my first round was against Martin Miller (for those who don't no Martin, he was one (the only one?) to beat SoulSeeker in T12P at Nats this year). I was using Heroless, and I needed one play to go right, and I could have won (he was running out of offense, and I knew I could stop one of the two battle winners left in his deck). He played Mayhem, and attacked, and I blocked. He played the battle winner I couldn't stop, and it turned out he had drawn them both anyway...So the final score was 5-0.
That wasn't the worst part though. The worst part is that in a big tournament when you lose big the first round, you expect to play a new player/someone who may not have played in a lot of tournaments. I was hoping I could bounce back and maybe do well the rest of the tourney, but as it turns out, Gabe had handed Chris Bany a 5-1 loss, and so I got paired up with Chris...I lost 5-1. That is what inspired the retirement of the Heroless of the North.

Honestly, I don't often count myself out. The one I remember the most was Burton reed at a florida local many years back.
-
it was the first tourny i played and i won the first game because my oppenent had a really bad but then the second game i got placed against roy canaday and lost five-0
-
My worst pairing was in teams was when I was at a local and I played with a 7 year old against The Hobbit13 and Martin Miller.
4-0 in the first 3 turns.
Held on for a 5-1 loss.
Next round:
Matt Brinkman and someone else
5-1ish.
Last place. YAY!

That's not a nice thing to say about your first opponent. I've heard of bad hair days, but this...... :o
-
I don't think I have had a bad pairing, just bad draws and bad decks...
-
My worst pairing; a mirror. That guy sure did know how to play the same deck I was playing.
-

He managed to use your Gabriel against you while it was still your turn. Freaky.

Plus when you tried to target his character it targeted yours. :)
-
One of mine was when I was at nats this year and it was my first time playing type-2 2-player in a tourney and it was with a deck somebody gave me to make it even. And I ended up going against Gabe. Great game...it was close. I made a noob move. If i'd had caught that, it'd had been closer...or I might have even won i think...but I had fun XD

Hey man, I won T1 multi, and got second in T1 2p only because of really terrible draws and the 2-liner in the second game (against Gabe):P ,still, every category in that tournament was awesome (except T2, which I did not play)! I'd have to say that was the most times I've seen SoG discarded with the deck discard LS though  So Gabe only won 3 of 4 events, and got 2nd in multi. Lol cut a fellow Wisconsinite some slack man!
You're right, I forgot he didn't get first in multiplayer. My bad >_<

Hey,
"I have no chance of winning" isn't really my style. But I have had a few "are you kidding me?" pairings over the years. A few that come to mind...
T1-2P Nationals 2009. After three rounds I was 1-2 and got paired with Chris Bany in the next round.
T1-2P Nationals 2008. After six rounds I was 3-3 and got paired with Gil Kimmons (4 time national champion). After losing that game and falling to 3-4 I got paired with Daniel Whitten (2 time national champion) in the next round.
T2-2P Nationals 2002. In the 5 rounds of T2-2P I managed to play Bryon Hake, Chris Bany and Mike Berkenpas. The three of them finished the tournament 1st, 2nd, and 4th.
T1-MP Nationals 2004. Second to last round I was part of a table consisting of Justin Alstad, Roy Cannaday, Jeremiah Bryant, and Myself.

I remember I went to a district in Alabama and i was playing type 2 against a kid who was about 8 or 7. He had a sadducees banding defence and i completely slaughtered him. He started crying and talking about how bad he was and his, and me, and some others had to comfort him to make him feel better. I never felt so horrible.
also NATS Kansas City I think i played a guy from NC? with Sin in the Camp and while i was combo-ing off I was telling him how sorry I was and that it was the decks fault and he flipped and made a scene about how he was never going to play redemption again. Bryon Hake came over and tried to console him and tell him that it wasnt over and he could still win- that all he had to do was get a good dom. "I DONT HAVE ANY" "HE TOOK THEM ALL" and then he quit. for some reason i didnt feel so bad. oh well.
On a side note it took me years to get over playing against Xerosplash...everytime we played i got so nervous and never could keep my train of thought and make horrible mistakes.

interesting. I know I played you first round, and I'm from NC (region), and you pulled the combo off against me, and I knew it was over...but I don't remember making a scene. or quitting. I was uber upset about it. I had never heard of anything that incredible at the time.
on a side note, I had to play Eric Largent last round of T2-2P (and t2 Multi...)
what great ways to start and end.

T1-MP Nationals 2004. Second to last round I was part of a table consisting of Justin Alstad, Roy Cannaday, Jeremiah Bryant, and Myself
I remember that game...that was the first year of my "speed freak" deck and while Jeremiah knew what was coming because he played online quite a bit, Roy blocked my small Hero with an immune Nero...I think I drew most of my deck that turn. :P
When I was done, Jeremiah turns to Roy and says "You got freaked" :D

interesting. I know I played you first round, and I'm from NC
NC = North Carolina, not North Central

heh, oops. fixed, but I guess it doesn't matter.
