Title: Why do Jocks get praised, but Nerds get looked down on?
Post by: AJ on June 06, 2014, 04:46:22 PM
I find myself asking this question more and more because each time I bring up the subject of card games or video games to my peers I get mocked and kind of get looked at as if I was some kind of freak from outer space. Its not even that I am a nerd because sports is my main hobby and nerdyish stuff comes secondary but why do people look down on exercising the mind?

Because society these days cares more about outward appearances than anything you might have on the inside (intellect, wit, caring, etc.).

That is a very old stereotype that frankly I don't see a lot of anymore outside of t.v. and movies.  People will generally scoff at things they don't understand or don't like themselves, regardless of the particular skill or joy that it entails.  Not sure how cards and sports have to do with exercising the mind more generally, but that isn't attacked except by caricatures from what I see.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays magic the gathering. Not sure why that's relevant however I shall leave it here.

As a public high school teacher, I assure you that these stereotypes still exist with as much hatefulness as they did in the old days.

As a rural resident who interacts with the public school students of the county I very much agree with YMT on this one.

The Roc plays D&D.

Honestly, society is changing. There's still a negative stigma, particularly in high school (where it's "cool" to hate on things in general), but as a general rule people are discovering that everyone is a nerd in one way or another. Sports junkies, engineers, music nerds, etc.  People often give me weird looks when they find out I still play Pokemon because it's seen as a kid's game.  I generally just say it's a pretty good game and I enjoy it, so why not?  If they're still judging me, I tell them I won $600 and that usually shuts them up.

Also

nerds = a single-minded expert in a particular technical field (e.g. science/computers/math)

geeks = a knowledgeable and obsessive enthusiast.

A better way to view it is nerds get excited doing science while geeks go to comic con all dressed up :)

Carry on.

I think that people only care about how strong you are or how you look, but that's just my opinion. ;)

Or, people are just idjits.

It's nice, that we are all nerds here. Makes one feel at home.
