Minnesota and California are the same state.  Unfortunately, BubbleBoy is one of those that think MN owns CA (and call CA "West Minnesota"), when, in reality, CA owns East California.

Surprising fact:

Columbus, OH is closer to New York City than it is to Minneapolis, MN. Boston Columbus is, in fact, dead smack in the middle between Boston. MA and Minneapolis, MN.

Boston is, in fact, dead smack in the middle between Boston. MA and Minneapolis, MN.

That would indeed be surprising, and would violate most principles of Geometry. In fact, I think I'll add it to one of my tests:

1. Two points are in the coordinate plane. When you draw the segment that connects these endpoints, one of them is also the midpoint. How is this possible?

I'm glad I'm not in your math class, no matter how much I actually enjoyed geometry (at least for the first semester last year...for those of you who weren't there yesterday to hear my messed up story about math class, feel free to ask).  :P

Bill wore his nationals name tag yesterday in hopes that nationals will come to MN.  ;D

Another slightly surprising fact:  Atlanta, GA and New York, NY are both about the same distance from Columbus, OH.

Boston is, in fact, dead smack in the middle between Boston. MA and Minneapolis, MN.

Fixed above.  Thanks for the correction.

I'm glad you are a geometry teacher and not a geography teacher.  The idea that the Earth's surface is a plane went out with Columbus--the explorer not the city.  ;)

Fixed above.  Thanks for the correction.

Don't think I am not aware of your underlying intent, however subtle. Geometrically speaking (Euclidian, of course), the only way an endpoint of a segment can also be the midpoint is if both endpoints were the same point to begin with.

Clearly this is a Jedi mind trick trying to get us to believe that Minneapolis and Boston are actually the same city, and that having Nats in MN would effectively allow Nats to be in the Midwest and East Coast at the same time.

Nice try....  ;)

Well since MN and CA are the same state, there is precedence that Boston and Arden Hills are the same city ;) And we could have nats in 3 states at once ;)

Actually, we gave Minneapolis to Boston as a Christmas gift and to cement our recent political alliance. So Minneapolis is technically "West Boston" these days, which would effectively make them the same city, allowing Nationals to be held in the Midwest and on the East Coast at the same time.

I find it funny, that Minnesotans came up with the whole "West Minnesota" idea, and then the Western ones decide to call us "East California" um... nice try guys, but by doing that, your copying Minnesota. I suppose it's because we're just that awesome.

there is a definite division between Minnesota and West Minnesota. so you're copying us by trying to declare that you actually own us. funny that you only start saying that once we declared California's renaming to West Minnesota...

We've had a street named after East California (http://books.google.com/books?id=K3cpAAAAYAAJ&q=%22east+california%22&dq=%22east+california%22&ei=eDZKS6j0MaT-kQTHmOkP&cd=3) since well before 1923.  Texas has one, too (http://books.google.com/books?id=nDUdAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA786&dq=%22east+california%22&ei=eDZKS6j0MaT-kQTHmOkP&cd=1#v=onepage&q=%22east%20california%22&f=false).  It's not a new idea, we've recognized East California for years.

made it wittier by replacing one place with the same place? I don't think so. that's like the whole "Knock knock" joke with saying Banana a million times, but you would have it changed to Apple. which really wouldn't be that funny, since everybody knows that the Banana joke is the proper one. Orange you glad that I didn't say Banana again?
love that joke... apple would make it lame though.

That's not a fair stipulation. I don't know if there was a FL States last year, but I certainly intend to make sure there is one this year, even if not in Orlando. Having hosted the CT state tournament in the past, I would like to think that I am qualified. Plus, Roy has already agreed to come down to FL to help out if I get a BIG tournament.

Roy alone makes any state a favorite.  ;D

The predominate issue IMO is not the quality of the host it is the size and motivation of the native player base that had me make that suggestion.

Still not a fair stipulation, since there may be large cells of players in hiding, waiting to be peacefully discovered.  ;)

States/Provinces holding a State- or higher-level tournament last year...

CA, CT, GA, IA, KY, MA, MD, MN, NC,  NE, NV, NY, OH, ON, OR, PA, RI, WA, and WI

States with a large underground cell of players who are willing to be peacefully discovered...

And if we need to smoke that hidden cell out, I know just the dog...

I agree that Nats will likely be in a state that has had a large and stable enough playgroup that they were able to host a State tournament last year.  I also can confidently rule out CA (because they just had Nats), KY (because I know the state of my state), and the provinces (because I don't see a Nats in Canada for a loooong time).  If others could eliminate their states, we could probably get this down to only a few locations.

Well I do not know if I qualify as a top tournament host, but I believe I am the only active tournament host in MD.  I have no plans to host Nat's for a few years, I am trying to grow my play group first, then we will see.  I did work with Roy to host States last year and I am planning to apply for MD States again this year, so in short you can probably rule MD out of the Nats Race.

Thanks, but I think it would be better to hear from the people who actually are high up in the tourney hosting for each state (ie. hosted a State or Regional level tourney there before).

So this leaves us with the following likely possibilities.
States/Provinces holding a State- or higher-level tournament last year...
CA, CT, GA, IA, KY, MA, MD, MN, NC,  NE, NV, NY, OH, ON, OR, PA, RI, WA, and WI
yeah. Nationals is definitely going to be in Rhode Island. [/sarcasm]

I believe I am the only active tournament host in MD...you can probably rule MD out of the Nats Race.
That's good enough for me :)

So this leaves us with the following likely possibilities.
CT, GA, IA, MA, MN, NC,  NE, NY, OH, PA, RI, and WI
Title: Re: Wheres Nationals?
Post by: Alex_Olijar on January 14, 2010, 04:54:51 PM
By intution, we can rule out NC (It wouldn't be at Cactus, too far out in the boonies) and OH (recently held there). RI and WI could also probably be legitimately ruled out (MA/CT and MN/IA are in the same proximity but offer more established hosts and player bases).

So we have CT, GA, IA, MA, MN, NE, NY, and PA. In my opinion.

We're all going to Disney World, Disney's treat. All you have to do is volunteer time to local charitable organizations.

Kali River Rapids

In Minnesota, there is pretty much a guarantee that many will attend. The playgroup(group) here is one of the (if not the) biggest in the US. And it has been 5 years since MN has had it before (not to mention that that was by far the largest nationals ever held), so I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for it again.

From what I heard, it sounds quite probable that Nats will be held here at North Heights. All we need is Rob's okay, which I hope he gives.

Just trying to be optimistic here. :)

Don't you see the invisible vertical line above the dot at the end?   ;)

Where is the verb in this sentence?
That is a question, not a sentence.  "Is" is the verb.  :)

Unless, you are asking where "the verb" is in your question, which is tricksy.  In that case, "the verb" is slightly nearer the middle of your question.

And if you were asking about the verb in my sentence, see STAMP's reply.  It was an exclamation with an partially invisible exclamation point.  In exclamations, it is OK to have an understood "That was a" before the exclamation.  That was the case in my rendering of the prof's exclamation.  The understood "was" was the verb.  :)

In exclamations, it is OK to have an understood "That was a" before the exclamation.
As in, "That was a wow!" or "That was a incredible!"

In my opinion, PA's not quite ready yet. Give us a couple of years, maybe. Depends on what happens.

*My opinion is not the only one that matters. Mike B's is definitely more important.

That's what the Brawl announcer says in the original Japanese version, before localization for the US.  "That was a wow!  That was a incredible!"

MN isn't that much further than IA. although, I'd be fine with either, I'm only a few hours more away from IA then where it'd be held here in MN.

His point is that you are being inconsistent by correcting someone else's spelling of Samson, and then making spelling mistakes yourself.  And if you don't want to be corrected, then don't correct others.

If you pick a name like Raven, you have to expect this.  The first three things that people think of when they think of ravens are the football team, the famous poem, and that show staring that teenage girl who used to be the little Olivia kid on the Cosby Show.  You are naturally going to get posts that somehow connect to those things once in a while.  Learn to laugh with people instead of taking offense.

I'm getting slammed in other parts of the forum currently, and I'm not taking it personally.  You can do it to :)

I am not making fun of anybody. (Even though it was pretty funny) And that wasn't the first thing that popped into my head when I thought of that. And if you don't like people joking around with you, you shouldn't be doing it to everybody else. I am just having good clean fun. Not my fault you are the party poopeh...People make fun of my name too. I am fine with that because if you aren't even able to laugh at yourself, then there would be no point in laughing with other people. Just don't take it the wrong way when I joke Raven...not my intentions
