I think a music subforum would be great so those of us who don't care do not have to see the millioneth argument about favorite bands.

I think a music subforum would be wonderful. I've always liked the "rate the artist above you" forum game, but I've refused to post it as I'd feel like I'd be spamming the forum considering its current condition.
Although, the main hinderance will be different opinions on what is appropiate. (Almost) all of us can agree that obscene artists/bands would be inappropiate to discuss, but what about youth-appropiate non-christian artists? I know there was a discussion about that a while back, so we obviously have people on both sides of the issue.

Yes. I like to think of this forum as a giant cookie, free of charge. Whenever someone posts an entertaining or interesting topic that stirs up friendly conversation or debate, more chocolate chips or nuts are added to the cookie. Whenever someone spams (or posts a thread about music on) the forum, a giant can of spam is added to the cookie.
Now, don't get me wrong. I'm from Austin (maker of SPAM), but I don't like spam with my cookies.

My tastes in bands have changed since the old threads were made, so your post is not without merit. Since moving to Florida, I have been hearing bands that I never heard before on the local Christian radio station Z88.3. I listen to it every morning, and I have decided that although I still prefer 80's Christian rock groups, I also enjoy listening to:
1. Casting Crowns
2. Mandisa
3. Mercy Me
4. Kutless
I'm pretty sure I had TobyMac on my old list (as part of DC Talk), so I will not repeat that here. Liberty University alumni ftw! ;D

Lady Gaga, Hannah Montana, Justin Bieber, and the Jonas Brothers (despite them going to my church) are not Christian. Obviously Beethoven isn't either, but it's Classical and doesn't fall under the secular category so I condider it as a neutral.

Casting Crowns has interesting lyrics, and actually make music, despite them being incredible overplayed, overrated, and not that talented. not so with Third Day.

AFR (American Family Radio). hate it. KFSI/KJLY is waay better, but my mom is the one who plays the radio around the house. I just listen to CD's now

I listen to Z88 here in Orlando. You can listen to it on the web. They do play Casting Crowns alot, but that is the only reason I have even heard of them. I could care less about "musical quality." Lyrics are what matter to me most, so as long as the tune is catchy, I'm happy. Casting Crowns has lyrical depth, which seems to be generally lacking in mainstream Christian music.

I'd agree with that statement. I like Mark Shultz's "story songs" like Letters from War, He's My Son, etc., and Aaron Shust has some good stuff, but otherwise, good lyrics are hard to come by in mainstream. which is partly why I don't listen to mainstream.

I'm really liking TFK and Third Day, Casting Crowns and Skillet a little bit. Honestly, I couldn't care less for DC Talk or Toby Mac...

Probably my favorite band at this point is For Today. Lyrically, they are just about the most forthright songwriters I have seen on the Christian metal scene in quite some time. For some softer stuff, I love Holding Onto Hope. Also, Means is a really good band, although they disbanded a couple years back.

I agree with potg about For Today. They are great. Another one to go along with For Today is Sleeping Giant. They are unashamed of the Gospel and share it from the stage. (My boys and I have seen both these bands live and they love to share the Word).

I don't understand what kind of effect metal has on other people, but it just makes me more uptight than I can be comfortable with for more than a few seconds. A soft tune - especially with wholesome lyrics - soothes me.
Maybe it's a type A vs. type B thing...type A people need to be calmed down, and type B people need to be wound up more? :dunno:

As I said in my post above, what you describe is only Screamo/Death metal. Most of the stuff I listen to actually HAS good singers that you can sing along with.

It's not about firefighters. The line "There's a hero living in me" comes to mind. You're referencing the video, not the lyrics. The "Best Kept Secret" music video comes to mind here as well, where Jesus is supposed to be the Best Kept Secret, yet the video portrays nothing of the like. Music videos are artistic representations of the words contained in the song, but not necessarily the meaning of the song.

It's about the flesh, the "old man." Inside each of us is a bunch of desires aka human nature. On our own, we can't control it and if we allow it to control us, it's quite easy for it to consume us. Instead, we need the Lord's help to get it under control. Yeah, in the Bible it says that "the old man has passed away" but our flesh still fights us. You think that Satan's going to give up on us just because we became Christians? No! In fact, we get attacked all the more because we have the potential to be used by God to change other's lives. I see this song as a description of the fight that goes on inside me just about every day. I'm powerless to control what I can become on my own. I can't do it without God and this song reminds me of that. If you personally feel like it's describing demonic possession, that's your opinion, but it's not accurate.

I really like them however I feel that a lot of their songs are very depressing. Some may see it as reassuring and showing that even christian's have hard lives, however, that kind of music should (in my opinion) be taking in moderation >.>

I used to really like them, but now that I have listened to other things I realize they arn't very good. I mean the guy doesn't really growl it is more like a rasp and their instramentals are not that great in comparison to other bands. I really like there lyrics though... and i do like me some storm the gates of hell ones in a while.

I like their lyrics, but yeah, talent wise they aren't as good. although, their singing is pretty good (not as good as Underoath...)

Underoath is heavier than Demon Hunter. and Haste the Day. and We Came as Romans (who are awesome). sure they aren't as heavy as TDWP or Becoming the Archetype, but who cares? I still listen to TFK. different genres.

Actually, under most circumstances imho, it just becomes noise. There is so much 'garbage' (imho) music out there because the singer... I'm sorry, screamer, screams the whole time. I can't understand it, and it's boring and not original to me. I just don't enjoy music like that, and I don't see how others do either.
I also can't stand rap, mostly. I'll listen to some 90's stuff every once in awhile, but tobyMAC is not my favorite... Neither is Corpus Christi, haha.

and if you can come up with an indisputable (and broad) way to determine whether a band is Christian or not, you'll win the nobel prize.
as far as Rap goes, yeah, they have some good artists. but I'm sure there are a mountain of ones that are "Christian" that really aren't good. good Christian rap is still relatively new, so we'll have to wait and see.

yes i have heard of bach i listen to all kinds of music, that being said im not knocking bands for not being christian. i love alot of bands that are in no way christian. i just got tired of listening to bands and not knowing if they are talking about god or their gf i am not saying that makes the band evil it is just my preferance to pick a side of the fence and stay on it. it just kind of peevs me when bands like red, skillet etc claim to be christian on the christian station and then on the secular station make no mention of god or being christian at all. ....but that doesnt make them bad bands, its just my opinion haha

@ Non-screamo fans: Check out some of War of Ages' (All Consuming Fire, Wages of Sin) or Haste the Day's (Pressure the Hinges, Vertigo) solo's. You don't have to listen to the screaming, just focus on the music. That takes more skill than strumming chords.

Actually, I listen to a plethora of music, and I don't feel like listing it all here. Led Zeppelin, The Who, Green Day, Skillet, Kutless, David Crowder, Remedy Drive, Incubus, Newsboys... Just to name a few. I couldn't possibly list them all.
I happen to have a passionate hate against Fallout Boy, Boys like Girls, Panic at the Disco, Jonas Brothers and Justin Beiber. I also have a VERY strong dislike for Top 40 stations and everything they represent... But that's for another day.

A7x is many things. One of them is not better musically. Than anyone.
I have to jump back in this thread to argue this point. I consider A7X to be up there with bands like Dream Theater in terms of musical skill and quality.

The supertones were a very solid Christian band for many years. If you haven't listened to their music before, I would highly recommend you give them a listen.

They were the standard that all other bands were measured by.
Interestingly, Petra was formed and produced by John Elefante while he was still a member of the secular group Kansas.

I've only had 1 FiF CD and I think it was probably one of their worst ones (the one with the dude with the afro dunking on the cover). I've heard pretty much nothing but good about FiF. That "blitz" song with the supertones and FiF is pretty good too.

The song is *obviously* chronicling the band's struggle with religion, singing about a man that is going to be killed to represent what they were feeling when they thought God had forsaken them. What Christian has never had that struggle? >:c >:c >:c >:c >:c
