Title: ways to limit bandwidth?
Post by: Master KChief on September 22, 2010, 02:33:12 PM
my roommate recently got a kindle so hes been downloading off of torrents for books and pretty much taking up all of the bandwidth. im pretty much unable to find an online match on xbox live, and my laptop is noticeably slower loading pages while hes downloading. is there anyway to throttle his bandwidth usage?

You can if you have a router or firewall that you have access to tweak. Don't ask me specifics (networks are not my thing), but I think you can with those.

yes, everything goes through a router.

Which router?  If it's an advanced model, it might have a few useful features.  I'd also recommend DD-WRT, which enables you to limit specific kinds of transmissions (i.e. BitTorrent)

nothing like a silent war over bandwidth between roomates ;)

just subtly unplug the internet from the router and hardwire your live to the internet ;D

lol that is first of all absolutely hilarious 2ndly if he uses a certain program (utorrent or limewire) it will let you decide how much bw it spends on torrents....ask him nicely to lay them back alot or sneak on his computer and fix it yourself

I'm thinking if he's asking us, he's already tried asking his roommate.

That would be unethical.  Two wrongs don't make a right.

i have a linksys wrt160n. i've looked into messing around with the qos settings, but it didnt appear to do any much better concerning my laptop at least (everything, even my 360, is ran wirelessly to the router, so maybe thats why qos didnt seem to work). what is dd-wrt?

just subtly unplug the internet from the router and hardwire your live to the internet ;D

you dont know how many times i've done this already... ;D

I'm thinking if he's asking us, he's already tried asking his roommate.

correct, i've already tried reasoning with him, but he conveniently forgets everytime...its time to take matters into my own hands and throttle his bandwith myself. >:(

What kind of router is it and Who's router is it?

linksys wrt160n. its my router, so i have access to all the settings.

Can you just set up your router to block stuff coming from unknown sources? If it's a wireless router, just password-protect it.

its not an unknown source, its my roommate. hes just using too much bandwidth.

i dont want to say 'no, you cant use torrents or downloads anymore'. i just want to put a cap on how much he is downloading at a time, so it doesnt lag me.

Doesn't your college have a student WiFi network?

I can't speak for MKC, but the housing on my campus does not have Wi-Fi. However, each room has their own hardwired connection to the internet so it isn't an issue for me.

So Roberts isn't the only place that's still stuck in the 1990's?  Of course, I'm the ringleader of rouge AP's.

Well, the hardwire connections here are pretty insane. I usually get over 50mbps up and down on speed tests, with 11 ping.  :P

50 mbps up? thats insane.

i do not live on a campus; i have my own apartment.

Seems like your router doesn't support ways to limit the bandwidth.  The ddwrt thing is a software upgrade for your router.  I'm not 100% sure that will help you anyway unless their software has options to limit the bandwidth with your exact model.  If you try that upgrade and it doesn't work though, then your router will be dead and worthless.

I'd tell the guy to stop download'n stuff period.  Cause that's your router and he's lagging you.  Who's name is on the internet bill?  If it's yours, then he can get his own connection if he has a problem with it, or have some respect.

DD-WRT has options to limit bandwidth by MAC, IP, or protocol (i.e. BitTorrent).  There's no reason the upgrade wouldn't work, unless he doesn't follow the directions.  It'll take upwards of 1/2 hr., though.

That's pretty sweet then.  But he does need to know if something does go wrong, his router is dead.

its my name on the internet bill, but we split the bills 1/2 and 1/2 of course. it wouldnt really be fair for me to ask him to completely stop doing what he wants with the internet. thats why putting a cap on his bandwidth usage seems like the best solution.

i did check out the dd-wrt website. unfortunately, the program does not work with my specific firmware version of my router. i checked about updating my firmware for my router, and there was an update, but it still did not put my router in a position to be compatible with the program. :(

anyone have any other programs/suggestions like this? this seemed to be the exact solution i was looking for...too bad i cant use it. :(

It isn't really fair of him to use all the bandwidth, either.

Seems like your solutions are, get a router that works with this thing or make him stop tormenting with torrent.

Hire Sonic with a K-BAR to beat him until he limits it.

Seriously, how much can one torrent?

A LOT. My internet stinks between 3 and 7am at home because my roommate is torrenting all sorts of stuff. It's so much that I can barely browse the internet.

WoW is such a waste of time. There's no way you pay me enough to play that game.

I agree 100%.  I'd be better to pay the total internet bill yourself then to get dialup access at best.  I understand you're trying to be fair with the guy, but it seems he's completely disrespecting you.  So i'd say stop, or get your own connection.

Justin Bieber sounds like a 12-year-old girl.
