9,000,000,312 viewers? I doubt that. there's not that many people on this earth.

I'd have to say Avatar. but I haven't seen Holmes or Blind Side yet, so... LotR is still the best of the decade.

Invictus was the best for me. There might have been something else early in the year im forgetting about but oh well. And Avatar Sucked I am not at all a fan of seeing 3D movies that dont have campy pop out effects or air thin plots or copy and pasted music or tall blue people for that matter. Yeah im not a fan of Avatar lol

Also why do you have #3 on there???? Thats a bit creepy....

Haven't yet seen Inviticus, tho.

Well I know what movie we won't be seeing up there....Paranormal Activity...it sucked soooooooo bad. Like a vaccum. It wasn't even scary. Except for the end. and that was 5 minutes. And it was kind of hard to believe it was based of a real story...

TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT UP! thank you sk. Up was the best, hands down.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't.

For me, it's a battle between Avatar, UP!, and Star Trek. All three of those were amazing.

The Disney movie 'UP' was a average disney movie, there was adventure, sadness, then a colorful ending. But it was still a good movie.
Star Trek was more of an action movie, I would give it a 8-10 rating wise.

There is more people on earth than 9 million people. The U.S.A has about 3million,china about 4million,England 2million and so forth.

UP! was even better than average in my opinion. Great humor, great action, and amazing drama. I cried, literally. And that might be funny if you know me.

It was a moment! The whole thing was awesome, and this is from the guy who saw the princess and the frog and started warning people about it. *Shudder* What a dark movie.

+1UP

Not to be annoying, but:

1) The number you had in your original post, 9,000,000,312, is nine billion three hundred twelve. Which is about one and a third times the world's population.
2) The US has over 300 million people. China has over 1.3 billion. The UK has over 61 million. Your numbers are way off.

average? no, it was amazing. it was the scariest saddest most funny adventure movie I've ever seen. well, maybe not quite, but it was amazing. in my top 10 movies of all time.

When talking about the popularity of movies, it is "standard" to use box office profits, not viewers.  Like Tim said, your numbers are completely off.  I would be interested in seeing an accurate version of this list using profits though...

Here's the listing of profits for 2009's movies (http://boxofficemojo.com/yearly/chart/?view2=worldwide&yr=2009&p=.htm).
Title: Re: Top movies of 2009

Although I expect Holmes will go up on the list over time, Avatar is by far the winner according to that list, and it only recently came out.

However, box office profits generally represent the public opinion of the movie before they know anything about it, since you don't actually know what you think of a movie until after you have paid to see it, so I don't think profits are necessarily the best way to judge the best movies (which is why this thread is here in the first place I assume).

that list can't be right. Antichrist is number 267, not 666.

on a side note, I can't believe Up didn't beat Ice Age.
Title: Re: Top movies of 2009

Sequels to popular movies typically do well in the box office, regardless of whether they were better than other movies. This is another reason judgements based on profits are inaccurate.

Yeah it is. It opened saying it did. Also, during the special edition of the DVD, they had a special where the family members of both people were there during the taping to make sure it was accurate.

Hahahahaha.
Anyway Avatar is by far best movie of the year, decade, century, ever it does not matter. Avatar is number one. Also the effects on that movie set the bar farther than the moon. Good luck trying to compete with that one. Sherlock Holmes was good too, but no Avatar.

Pocahontas Avatar was shiny, but no way it beats out No Country for Old Men, High Fidelity, LotR, Almost Famous, There Will be Blood, The Dark Knight, or Spirited Away.

Spoiler: Avatar (hover to show)

I will say Sherlock Holmes is worth every penny of the movie ticket I paid for!  (I actually paid for two, since I took my wife with me  ;D).  I would highly recommend it.  I don't remember there be much language (if any), there is PG-13 "nudity" which is a bare back and Robert Downey Jr. basically without a shirt on "the hand-cuff scene."  You see MUCH worse on tv, and they made the movie to fit Downey, so if you like him it is a must see.

Agree completely with Crash! Gretel and I thought the movie was phenomenal! So well thought out and inquisitive. Of course, we actually got to be at Baker Street and see the house.. ::)....and we still want to know how you get to Tower Bridge from Parliament in less than 5 minutes running underground....since it's at LEAST a 30 minute walk...but then again, neither of us are Sherlock Holmes...

Movie? I'm going to say Batman Begins. I never saw Passion of the Christ, but I heard that was the best from a secular critic. series? Lord of the Rings, Bourne comes in second though... I am Legend was also exceptional.

Anyway Avatar is by far best movie of the year, decade, century, ever it does not matter.
um... I think you're forgetting Princess Bride.  ;D

Hm...I can't really remember the entire decade...but I remember there being a lot of good stuff in 2003/04 (such as Johnny English).

See: High Noon.  (It's basically a western told in the same format as 24, clocks and all, but was made in the 50s.)

I really enjoyed District 9, coolest movie I've seen in a while... but since it's R I guess that's all I can say. For adults out there, I recommend it.

For family movies... just saw "cloudy with a chance of meatballs," and it was really good! It surprised me! It's great for what it is -- funny, entertaining, silly, and able to be seen by just about anyone.

I guess I don't watch very many movies.

2009 movies I saw, ranked by how much I liked them.

* means I watched it in the theater.  Otherwise it was a DVD view.

1. The Blind Side* <- I teared up
2. Up   <- I cried like a baby and held my wife for like 2 hours straight after that one.  :(
3. G.I Joe ** (Saw it twice in theater.  I'm a fanboy.  Hated cardboardman as Duke.  Loved the rest.  Violent for kiddies, though.)
4. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs* - a lot funnier (and funner!) than I expected
5. Star Trek - sorry, but I didn't like Kirk's character.  I know it is the effects of not having a father, but still... yuck!
6. Paul Blart: Mall Cop - not bad, but not that good, either

I still hope to see Invictus.

I agree with this.  I thought that all the other characters were about as good as the originals (or better in the case of Uhura).  But I also felt like Kirk's character was really destroyed.  In the originals, he was arrogant but in the new one he is sarcastically arrogant.  In the originals, he is always romancing women, but in the new one he is just a jerk to women.  In the originals, he was supremely focused on command and the safety of the Enterprise, but in the new one he is supremely focused on himself and doesn't care about the safety of anything.  In the originals, he was a well-rounded character with strengths and weaknesses, but in the new one he is a stereotypical rebel without a cause.

My favorite movie in 2009 - Up :)

As I have mentioned before, I go to see movies to relax and have fun.  As such my favorites from this last year include Transformers, Avatar, GI Joe, etc.  But Bryon got me to thinking about movies that make me cry.  Here is the list off the top of my head (there may be more I've forgotten):

Passion of the Christ
The Sound of Music  (every single time Mother Abbess sings to Maria)
The D-Day sequence of Saving Private Ryan
Brian's Song
Forrest Gump
Old Yeller
Braveheart
Field of Dreams
Gladiator
Titanic
Frequency
It's a Wonderful Life
White Christmas
