Title: This was fun.
Post by: EmJayBee83 on September 16, 2012, 09:52:14 PM
So, yeah, this is how I spent last Saturday (9/8/2012).

Going to run again next July (http://toughmudder.com/events/minnesota-sat-jul-20-sun-jul-21-2013/).  Let me know if you want to sign on with me.

That looks awesome but something tells me you have to be a certain age that I am not yet...

It was really fun; really, really stupid and a ton of fun. Basically if you can run a 10k you will have more than enough cardio because you get breaks waiting for each obstacle. Back in July my weekly long run was around a 10k, but I peaked too early and got lazy. Now I run a couple 5k or so with a couple of minutes of walking in between.

Should I pencil you in for next July?  ;)

What's the time-frame like on one of these things?

I'm getting in pretty good shape with my daily dance classes, but I'm not sure I can run a 10K in a decent time at all.

That looks like a blast.

I started C25K (http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml) some months ago and finished the program in 3 weeks. Then I injured my ankle right at the end of B210K (http://www.b210k.com/b210k-programme/) and had to stop (I do mean right at the end too. It was when I was taking my first attempt at a 10k). Probably had something to do with running 6-7 days a week..... Then once that was healed and my doctor okay'd me for running again, I got my wisdom teeth out which prevented me from running...... then when those stopped hurting, I moved to Minneapolis and haven't had time to run....

How much upper body strength does it take? I plan to pick up running again when I get a chance (not sure how long I'll be able to go....) and might be interesed in trying this. But I have basically no upper body strength.

I run slow--a 10k takes me a little less than an hour to complete (so basically around 9-10 minutes per mile). I did the event with my brother in-law. I estimate we ran about half the the 12 miles, and it took about 3 1/2 hours to complete the course. There were other people who ran the whole way and another group who started walking from about mile one on. The Tough Mudder is not a race--it is about finishing and helping everyone else finish.

I have a 13-week C210K (couch to 10k) (http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=1462924) program that I followed the past two years. (Yes, you really should only run 3 times a week.)  As far as upper body strength goes, I pulled a muscle in my shoulder on Labor Day and was in enough pain that I went to see a doctor on the Thursday before (and he told me to be really careful because I could do some permanent damage). So there were a few obstacles (curse you rings!) I couldn't do--but nobody was tsk-tsking about that. You try everything, complete as much as you can, help other people around you complete as much as they can, and have a blast. They also have a training link at the top of the Mudder (http://toughmudder.com) site that has their recommended strength training.
