ok, this is a joke debate thread.
this has been going on for centuries since the creation of adam and eve (though idk how long)
Is the tomato a fruit or a veggie?
this source says veggie
(https://www.cactusforums.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi280.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fkk199%2Fmiley_morgen%2FTotal%2520Randomness%2Fveggie_tales.jpg&hash=c2aa319144f249d2761f56b7384ebb0213e395fa)
but i say fruit.
what's your opinion?

Nix v. Hedden

Tomato is a fruit, not a vegetable. Corn is a grain, not a vegetable. No debate. The scientific definitions of fruits, vegetables, and grains classify these as such. Tomatoes are not sweet (Typically) and tend to go better with vegetables, that is why people associate them with vegetables. However, they are not vegetables. I know this is a "joke debate" thread, but I'm just clarifying the truth.

An apple is red
An apple is round
An apple is a fruit
A Tomato is red
A Tomato is round
Therefore,by the 2/3 similarity Postulate *, a Tomato is a fruit
Shall I pick out your tat or do you want to?
*2/3 Simialrity Postulate- If two of any three arbitrary qualities of any object living or non living object are similar than the third quality is similar.

Since when is Veggie Tales accurate? The only thing that is accurate are the Bible references and the "French Pea" accents that still mess up every once in a while.

Da Tomato
Botanically, a tomato is the ovary, together with its seeds, of a flowering plant. Therefore it is a fruit or, more precisely, a berry.
By U.S. tariff laws, a tomato is considered a vegetable. The applicable law defined produce by its use and not its scientific classification. And from a culinary point of view, a tomato is a vegetable.
What are Fruits and Vegetables
True fruits develop and contain seeds within the fruit (e.g. raspberries and oranges for example). Some plants have soft parts which contain the seeds and are not true fruits ("pomes" like the apple or pear, accessory fruits like the strawberry and fig). In cooking, fruits may be called vegetables because of the their use and the tomato therefore is used as a vegetable. Other botanical fruits used as vegetables include eggplants, cucumbers, and squashes such as zucchini and pumpkins. Also a bean pod is technically a fruit. The vegetable is a term used for other edible parts of plants (such as cabbage leaves, celery, and potatoes) which are not the fruit of the plant. So the tomato is the fruit of a tomato plant, but a vegetable for cooking.
Vine Analogy
Like the grape, the tomato grows on a vine, and is considered a berry, and berries are fruits.
A tomato is definitely a fruit. That's why it contains seeds. But most people would call it a vegetable. It's often used as vegetables are used. The term "vegetable" is a culinary term, so a tomato could be a fruit, served as a vegetable. The distinction is blurred by the labeling of "ketchup" as a vegetable when it is more properly a nutritional condiment.
The US Supreme Court, in 1883, defined the tomato as a vegetable in Nix v. Hedden, but acknowledged that it was botanically a fruit. (see related link) --- "Knowledge is to know that a tomato is a fruit, but wisdom is to know not to put one in a fruit salad."

no man it is all lasagna

The Tomato is a fruit, clearly, because the US government tariff laws say Vegatable, and when is the last time tariff laws were right?
-
On the vine, it's a fruit; on your plate, it's a vegetable.
So saith Mr. Wizard.

Wait we have college professors around here? Who?

When they say Professor, they aren't really professors... :rollin:

'tis a fruit no matter which way you slice it. Culinary standards are extremely broad and subject to interpretation. Chefs are always coming up with new creations, often mixing fruits and vegetables, and there really are no limits as to what you can and can't combine as long as someone is willing to eat it without dying. Tomato = fruit according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the scientific community.

Epic Fail.
so also says professor Underwood and professor Alstad.
anyways, so those who say in culinary tomato is a vegetable, but it's a fruit, so it's both a fruit and a vegetable? lol
i just think tomato is just the only fruit that wants to be a vegetable.

Bob the tomato is very confused, cant we just leave him be. I mean he already has problems deciding whether he's a boy or girl (in France he is masculine, in Spain she is feminine (or it could be the other way around) )
