Title: The Alchemist
Post by: STAMP on February 15, 2012, 05:46:43 PM
My daughter showed me a book she is reading for school, The Alchemist.  I had never heard of it, but figured it was a bunch of baloney.  Our school system is on the liberal side of the public school norm, which in itself is generally to the far left of the Christian norm.  I Googled and Wikipedia'd the book and am more convinced it's a bunch of baloney.  The Wikipedia article actually made me chuckle.

But I'm interested in the thoughts of those who have read the book, if anyone has.  What are your thoughts?

I have never read the book. However, your criticism strikes me as excessive. They aren't teaching the book as law, they asked your daughter to read a work of fiction.

I haven't read it in a while, but I remember really enjoying it. What are your problems about it? I don't remember anything that would be overly offensive to anyone but the super conservative bunch.

No. It's not the series about Nick Flamel....

This (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Alchemist_(novel)) is the story to which STAMP is referring.

It's a rather bizarre book, all I can remember is the kid turns into wind and realizes that every part of nature is every other part of nature, or something along those lines.

What's so wrong with it?  It's a work of fiction, allegorical, and they're not asking you to believe it's law...

I am often amused by the responses to my posts at times.  After reading your feedback, I had to go re-read my post.  I guess "bunch of baloney" means something different to you.  I never said I felt like the school was teaching the book as law.  I also never said I was against the school having my daughter read it.

What are your problems about it?

I don't have any because I haven't read it.  My first impression was that it was a "bunch of baloney" is all.  I was asking the community whether anyone read it and had feedback.  Yet, as usual everyone has to dive in and analyze my character.

I don't have a problem with it and I never said it was law.

C'mon folks...reading comprehension is on the SATs.   ::)   I asked for thoughts about the book.  NOT thoughts about my stance.  Sheesh.

This is the statement that led me to believe that you were labeling the book as negative, my mistake. Obviously the book is baloney, it's fiction  ::)

Next thing you know, you'll tell me I can't save Earth from the Buggers with my awesome knowledge of RTSs.

Then you need to read more carefully.  It only gives a reference point of where the school is on a liberal-conservative line graph.  I do not tell you where I am on the graph.  I do not tell you whether I agree or disagree with the school.  ::)
